What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure used to remove excess fat from a patient’s body. By melting and emptying out the deep layers of fat, it can be used to treat small or large areas from the chin to the ankles. Liposculpture has evolved into a precise, highly effective, minimally invasive permanent method of removing unwanted, stubborn deposits of fat in order to regain the smoother, sleeker body contour you desire.
Power-Assisted Liposuction
This method utilizes vibration to loosen the fat cells to facilitate easier and more complete removal. Our surgeon, Dr. Ahmad Saad, is internationally known for being a pioneer of PAL High Definition techniques, teaching surgeons from around the world our techniques for sculpting bodies with precise detail. These novel techniques achieve skin contraction that normally involves the addition of other modalities and additional cost.
Ultrasonic Liposuction
This approach uses ultrasonic energy to gently remove fat with less trauma to the surrounding skin and tissue. VASER is one brand that has popularized this technique, especially for allowing additional control and better definition around the mid-section. This technique is often used in our high definition liposculpture to etch the coveted “11” or “six-pack” abs.
Laser Liposuction
In this technique, a laser is used to heat the fat cells, liquefying them, allowing for easier removal. This results in a smoother result when compared to standard liposuction. The addition of heat also constricts the surrounding tissue and stimulates collagen production so the skin conforms to the new body contour.
While liposuction can revolutionize your life, it is not a substitute for diet and exercise. You can gain weight back after liposuction. Treated areas will not expand as they would have prior to liposuction, but the residual fat cells can swell with weight gain.
At Formation, we pair traditional liposuction with high definition liposculpture techniques in appropriate patients, going beyond fat removal to further sculpt and contour the patient’s body.
What Areas Can Liposuction Treat?
While we can target almost any part of the body individually, circumferential liposuction or Lipo360 is a popular choice. Liposuction can be selectively used to reduce fat in the following areas:
abdomen
Tailored to our patient’s individual body and desires, we can expose a tighter, smoother, and flatter stomach. Liposuction allows us to banish unwanted “love handles,” create a slim toned appearance, or further accentuate an “hourglass” figure.
breasts
By removing fat deposits from the lateral and inferior portions, the breast is beautifully defined. This also smooths out excess fat that can be noticeable under bra straps. Fat can also be transferred to the inner chest to naturally enhance your cleavage.
arms
Removing fat deposits from the upper arm, which are often caused by hormonal changes and aging, reveals a tone, fit-appearing upper arm.
thighs
Our surgeons can contour the fat deposits on the inner and outer thighs, remove “saddlebags,” and recreate the thigh gap to reveal a toned, lean limb.
back
Removing the fat deposits of the flanks and lower back help define the waist. A defined waist further accentuates the abdomen, torso and buttocks.
buttocks
Directed liposuction of the upper-outer butt and outer thigh provides dramatic contouring of the buttocks and can be combined with fat-transfer for a fuller size and shape without implants.
Am I A Good Candidate For Liposuction?
Although liposuction isn’t considered a major surgery, there are certain factors that can exclude someone from being a good candidate for the procedure. Our surgeons are best suited to determine if you qualify for liposuction, but you may be a good candidate if:
- You have “diet resistant fat”, often caused by genetics, that doesn’t respond to food regimes or exercise
- You are in good health, average to moderate weight and a non-smoker
- You have good skin elasticity (no loose or excess skin)
- You have fat deposits that are out of proportion with the rest of your body
- You understand that liposuction is a fat removal procedure -- it does not help with cellulite, stretch marks, or sagging skin. Age is not a determinant of candidacy, each individual is assessed for skin laxity to ensure desired goal can be achieved.
- You have a stable weight, positive outlook and specific goals in mind
While liposuction is a powerful procedure for fat removal, it is not a weight loss surgery. Patients who have a high BMI and are looking to remove over 10 pounds of fat may be better candidates for endoscopic balloon placement or ESG, our non-surgical weight loss procedures.
For those who have a large amount of weight loss with skin and muscle laxity, liposuction can be combined with an abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” to achieve the desired results.
