How To Verify A Florida Surgical Facility
Florida’s rules for outpatient surgical facilities are stricter than most marketing implies, but the burden of verification falls on the patient. Here’s what to check.
Any licensed Florida physician can legally perform cosmetic surgery. The real protection is at the facility level. Under Florida’s Office Surgery Regulations, any office performing Level II or Level III procedures, or removing more than 1,000 cubic centimeters of fat via liposuction, must be registered with the Florida Board of Medicine and must meet accreditation standards from one of three approved bodies:
- AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities)
- AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care)
- Medicare certification
Quad A is another recognized accreditation body used by many high-standard practices. All Formation surgeries are performed in Quad A certified facilities, which meet the same national standards.
Two verification steps before you book anywhere:
- Confirm the surgeon’s board certification directly on the American Board of Surgery website (or the American Board of Plastic Surgery site if the surgeon is a plastic surgeon).
- Confirm the operating facility’s registration on the Florida Board of Medicine’s public office surgery registry.
Ask any prospective surgeon which accreditation body their operating facility uses, when the last inspection was, and whether the same anesthesia team supports every case. These are reasonable questions. A practice that treats them as intrusive is a red flag. For general procedure guidance, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes patient education material that’s neutral and current.
When A Tummy Tuck Is Not The Right Answer
A tummy tuck isn’t for everyone, and Formation will tell you when it isn’t. Surgery works best on a stable foundation, so there are cases where waiting or a different plan serves you better.
If your weight is still moving up and down, the result can shift with it, so reaching a stable weight first protects the outcome. If you’re planning a future pregnancy, muscle repair can be undone by carrying another child, which is why many patients wait until they’re done having kids. And if the real issue is overall body fat rather than loose skin or separated muscle, a tummy tuck is the wrong tool. It tightens skin and muscle, but it isn’t a weight-loss procedure. For patients in that situation, a plan that starts with high-definition liposuction or the medically supervised prep phase above often makes more sense.
One more distinction worth naming. A cosmetic tummy tuck is elective and self-paid. A panniculectomy, which removes hanging abdominal tissue that causes rashes, chronic infection, or functional issues after significant weight loss, is a medically necessary procedure and is the only version insurance sometimes considers covering. Dr. Grandhige will tell you which one your case actually is at consultation. That honesty matters. He would rather decline a case than perform the wrong one.
