A tummy tuck removes skin that pregnancy or weight loss stretched past the point of recoil, and it stitches separated abdominal muscles back together. Training can’t do either one. If you live in Robles Park, Formation’s practice in Hyde Park is under five miles south. Dr. Gopal Grandhige plans and performs every tummy tuck there himself, then follows you for a full year.
Skin and the rectus muscle both stretch during pregnancy or a large weight change, and past a certain point neither springs back. Skin that has lost its recoil stays loose. Creams, crunches and devices that work from the surface don’t restore it.
The muscle problem is a split. The two vertical bands of the rectus pull apart down the middle, a condition called diastasis recti. A split wall bulges when you stand, cough or lift, however hard you train it. Planks make it stronger and leave the bulge where it was.
A tummy tuck handles both. Dr. Grandhige removes the excess skin, sutures the separated muscle closed and reshapes what remains. Liposuction alone can’t do either job, since it takes fat and leaves skin and muscle as they were. Many patients stand taller and move more comfortably once the core is closed. The operation is covered in full on Formation’s abdominoplasty in Tampa page.
Every tummy tuck consultation at Formation runs through three checks. The results decide whether you need skin removed, muscle repaired, both or neither.
Dr. Grandhige lifts a fold of skin below your navel and lets go. Skin with tone moves back toward the body right away. Skin that drifts back slowly or keeps a crease has lost its recoil.
With you standing relaxed, he looks for skin hanging over the lower belly. A fold that hangs while you’re upright can only be cut away. A roll that shows up only when you sit is usually fat under skin that still holds its shape.
You lie back and lift your head off the table. A ridge or dome down the midline points to separated muscle. So does a soft gap near the navel where fingertips sink in.
Clear all three and a tummy tuck is probably more surgery than you need. Liposuction handles the fat. Renuvion, a helium plasma energy device, can serve as a finisher for skin that’s only mildly loose.
If the fold fails, skin has to come off. Depending on how much there is and where it sits, that means a full tuck or a mini-abdominoplasty, which Dr. Grandhige offers in select cases.
A failed wall check with skin that still recoils and no hanging fold has its own route. For the right patient, Dr. Grandhige can bring the separated muscles back together with robotic-assisted surgery through three small incisions, without the long scar of a traditional tummy tuck. He completed fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery before focusing on aesthetics. If you have significant loose skin or excess fat, a different treatment usually fits better.
When the fold and the wall both fail, a full tummy tuck with muscle repair fixes both in one operation. Other mixes, such as skin that has lost some recoil but doesn’t hang, get decided in the exam room.
Major complications after a tummy tuck are uncommon. A 2024 Aesthetic Surgery Journal analysis of 55,596 patients treated from 2015 to 2022 found a 2.1 percent major-complication rate. The fleur-de-lis version, which adds a vertical incision, carried the highest rate.
Diabetes, being underweight or morbidly obese, and being male each raised the risk. Once those were accounted for, adding other cosmetic procedures to the tuck didn’t. Men weighing the operation will find what’s different on the abdominoplasty for men page.
An earlier review of 25,478 tummy tucks from 2008 to 2013, published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, reported a 4 percent rate and found that combining procedures did raise risk. Both studies drew on the same complication-insurance database, which records only major complications. A fluid collection drained in the office never shows up in either one. And a national average can’t tell you your own risk.
That’s what Formation’s screening is for. It covers your medical history, recent labs and a risk review before any date is set. Surgery takes place in a Quad A accredited facility, with the same anesthesia provider on every case and a physician assistant Dr. Grandhige employs directly. A team that has worked his cases before already knows his method.
Liposuction that refines the flanks and transitions around your tuck usually goes into the same operation. Larger contouring elsewhere often moves to a second date, so one recovery doesn’t pile on top of another. That’s the Formation Staging Line, and the page on abdominoplasty with liposuction explains how the two are paired.
Florida draws a line of its own. Under the state’s office surgery standards, liposuction done alongside a tummy tuck in a physician’s office is capped at 1,000 cc of supernatant fat. That’s the fat measured once the injected fluid settles out. Liposuction on its own can reach 4,000 cc in the same setting.
When you compare practices, ask where the operation takes place and how the plan stays inside that cap. A large liposuction plan booked into the same day as a tuck should come with a clear answer.
Staging covers the calendar too. If your weight is still moving, the whole plan waits until it settles.
You can learn whether you’re a candidate before you book a visit. Formation’s complimentary virtual evaluation with patient coordinator Hanna reviews your goals and outlines a plan before you decide to come in.
The in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige carries a fee and is a full surgical assessment. He runs the three checks, asks what you’ve already tried and tells you plainly what a tuck will and won’t change. The fee can be applied toward any procedure or product at the practice. Sometimes the right call is to wait, fix a health issue first or do something smaller. That’s Formation’s philosophy in practice, and you’ll hear it in the exam room.
Plan your first week around two things specific to this neighborhood: the construction site and your front steps.
The former Robles Park Village site, the 35-acre block bordered by East Lake and North Central avenues, has been under redevelopment since demolition began in September 2025. New construction is planned in phases. Expect fencing, truck traffic, dust and detours on the blocks around it. That matters when the first week after a tuck is mostly rest. Plan naps for the quieter parts of the day, and route your short walks away from the site.
The steps are the other piece. If your home sits up off the ground with stairs to the porch, count those steps before surgery day. The first days after a muscle repair are about rest and short walks, and porch stairs ask more of your core than a hallway does. Set up your bed, bathroom and supplies on one level, and arrange for someone to stay with you through the first week.
If home won’t be restful, Formation helps arrange a stay at a nearby hotel where it has relationships. Dr. Grandhige visits patients there so they don’t have to come into the office in those early days.
Keep early walks indoors or on level sidewalks close to home. Once you’re cleared for longer outings, the Riverwalk at Water Works Park in Tampa Heights gives you a flat path along the river.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige is a board-certified general surgeon, certified by the American Board of Surgery, who specializes in aesthetic surgery. He earned his medical degree at the University of Michigan and first matched into Yale’s six-year combined plastic surgery residency. He then changed course to finish a full general surgery residency, followed by fellowships in burn surgery, critical care and minimally invasive metabolic and foregut surgery.
That background shows in abdominal-wall work. More than 15 years and several thousand operations, including major abdominal cases, shape how he rebuilds a wall instead of tightening its surface. He limits his surgical volume so he can stay involved before, during and after each case. He performs advanced and revision tummy tucks himself rather than referring them out. His training and credentials are listed on his profile.
Formation’s 60/40 Recovery Standard treats the operation as 60 percent of your result and aftercare as the other 40. Poor aftercare can undo a well-performed surgery. So recovery runs on scheduled visits and lymphatic treatment from providers Dr. Grandhige has vetted himself.
A nurse stays with you for the first 24 hours. Week one is rest, short walks and pain control, with help at home. In weeks two and three, light activity returns, compression stays on and lymphatic treatments are on the schedule. Many patients go back to work after 10 to 14 days. Swelling eases across weeks four to six while lymphatic care continues. Unrestricted exercise returns at six to eight weeks, and your shape keeps refining for three to six months.
If fluid collects under the skin, called a seroma, Dr. Grandhige drains it in the office. The short video below shows what that visit looks like.
Your fat is liquid gold.
The fat you don’t want might be exactly what another part of your body needs.
During liposuction, the fat we remove doesn’t always have to be discarded. In fact, Dr. Gopal refers to it as “liquid gold.”
Why? Because that fat can sometimes be transferred to another area of the body to add volume, enhance natural contours, and create a more balanced shape.
For women, that might mean adding volume to the breasts, hips, or buttocks. For men, fat transfer can help enhance the chest or shoulders.
And because we’re using your own fat, we can potentially improve two areas during the same surgery.
Of course, fat transfer isn’t right for everyone. It’s something Dr. Gopal discusses with patients beforehand and incorporates into the surgical plan when appropriate.

Cosmetic surgery isn’t just cosmetic.
We often measure the success of plastic surgery by what we can see in before-and-after photos. But some of the most meaningful changes happen in ways a photograph can’t capture.
How someone feels about themselves. The confidence they carry into everyday life. The freedom of no longer feeling uncomfortable in their own skin.
For Dr. Gopal, that’s what makes this work so meaningful.
A patient who underwent body contouring in 2025 recently reached out to share how much the experience continues to mean to her.
She didn’t talk about measurements or how her body looked. She talked about how much better her days had become.
And that’s something Dr. Gopal has always believed: Cosmetic surgery isn’t simply about changing how someone looks. It’s about understanding what that change means to the person choosing it.

A flatter stomach without a tummy tuck? 👀
Pregnancy, and sometimes increased pressure from fat deep inside the abdomen, can cause the abdominal muscles to separate down the middle. This is called diastasis recti, and it can make your belly stick out even if you’re otherwise lean.
Traditionally, repairing that separation often meant undergoing a tummy tuck. But what if you don’t have much loose skin to remove?
For the right patient, Dr. Gopal can use robotic-assisted surgery to bring those separated muscles back together through three small incisions, without the long scar associated with a traditional tummy tuck.
That’s exactly what he did for the patient in these before-and-after photos. No tummy tuck. No additional procedures.
**But this approach isn’t for everyone.** If you have significant loose skin or excess fat, a different treatment may be more appropriate. That’s why understanding what’s causing your belly to protrude matters before deciding on surgery.

Why does fluid sometimes collect after surgery?
After certain surgical procedures, fluid can accumulate beneath the skin, forming what’s called a seroma.
In this video, Dr. Gopal demonstrates how he drains a seroma in a patient recovering from diastasis recti repair.
This is one of the reasons postoperative follow-up matters. It allows Dr. Gopal to monitor healing, identify any issues, and address them when necessary.

The fat is gone. But what takes its place?
When fat is removed during liposuction, it leaves behind space beneath the skin. As the body heals, fluid can sometimes collect in that space, creating what’s called a seroma.
And here’s why that matters.
If fluid continues to collect, it can potentially affect the final contour.
That’s why Dr. Gopal pays close attention to fluid buildup during recovery. His approach is to identify seromas early and address them quickly.

Not every patient who wants surgery is ready for it.
One patient came to Dr. Gopal wanting a tummy tuck. Over the next 18 months, she returned multiple times, having lost more weight each time. And each time, the answer was still no.
Not because she couldn’t have the surgery, but because she wasn’t where she wanted to be yet.
Instead of rushing into surgery, the focus was on helping her reach a healthier, more sustainable weight through nutritional counseling, lifestyle support, and medical weight management.
By the time she had lost 80 pounds, she was ready, both physically and mentally.
For Dr. Gopal, being a good surgeon isn’t just about knowing how to perform a procedure. It’s also about knowing when not to perform one.
Sometimes the best result starts long before the operating room.

Six hours. Hundreds of decisions.
High-definition liposuction is as much about precision as it is about technique.
Dr. Gopal can spend 6–7 hours on a single HD liposuction procedure, carefully evaluating the body’s anatomy, refining muscle definition, and making sure each contour transitions naturally into the next.
And that level of attention doesn’t change as the hours go by.
Because the final result is shaped by hundreds of small decisions made throughout the procedure.

Which one surprised you the most? 👀
Liposuction is one of those procedures people have heard a lot about, but not everything they’ve heard is accurate.
From what liposuction can actually achieve to how long results take to develop, there are plenty of misconceptions that can lead to unrealistic expectations.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige, board-certified plastic surgeon at Formation in Tampa, breaks down some of the most common beliefs about liposuction and explains what’s fact and what’s fiction.

This is not your typical liposuction. 👀
Most people think liposuction is simply about removing unwanted fat. But high-definition liposuction takes a different approach.
Before surgery, Dr. Gopal carefully maps out the patient’s natural anatomy, marking the chest, abdomen, and waist to guide where fat will be removed and where it should be preserved.
Why does that matter?
Because removing fat evenly isn’t necessarily going to create definition. HD liposuction uses strategic fat removal to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more sculpted, athletic appearance.
And those lines? They’re part of the planning that makes this level of precision possible.
The photos show an actual patient immediately after surgery. Swelling is still present, and the final results will develop as healing progresses.

The right time is after your last pregnancy, once your weight has held steady. A later pregnancy stretches the repaired muscle and skin again. Weight that’s still dropping, including on a GLP-1 medication, keeps reshaping skin after the operation.
Plenty of patients are in that position. In the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ 2025 report, tummy tucks ranked third among cosmetic surgeries at 173,251. In a companion survey, 82 percent of member surgeons reported consultation requests related to GLP-1 medications.
Waiting can be the right answer even for someone ready to book. One Formation patient asked for a tummy tuck and heard “not yet” more than once over 18 months. She worked through nutrition counseling and medical weight management in the meantime. She came back 80 pounds lighter and ready, physically and mentally.
Diabetes and high blood pressure don’t rule you out, but both are brought under control first. Smoking stops well before your date, because it cuts the oxygen supply that healing tissue needs.
Preparation is where Formation works differently. Your health and diet are assessed before surgery. Nutrition, protein, supplements and peptides are then adjusted in the weeks just before and after it, so your body has the material to rebuild. The incision and the sutures are the same at every practice. The planning around them isn’t.
Season matters in Tampa. Summer heat makes round-the-clock compression harder. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and a storm can cut power for days. A date over the Hillsborough County Public Schools winter break often pairs family help with the coolest weather of the year.
Three limits to know before you book. The scar is permanent and sits low across the abdomen. Swelling takes three to six months to fully settle. And over-resection leaves tight contours that age poorly, which is why Dr. Grandhige leans toward restraint.
Formation is on South Howard Avenue in Hyde Park, under five miles from Robles Park. Outside rush hour, it’s usually around a 15-minute drive.
One route takes I-275 south through downtown to Exit 42 for Armenia and Howard avenues, then continues south into Hyde Park. The surface route follows Florida Avenue into downtown, crosses the Hillsborough River on Kennedy Boulevard and turns south on Howard.
You won’t be driving at first. Arrange a ride for at least the first week, and for as long as you’re taking prescription pain medication. The short trip works in your favor here. Follow-up checks and lymphatic sessions in the first month won’t eat half a day, so keeping every appointment is easier.
Under five miles. Formation is on South Howard Avenue in Hyde Park, usually around 15 minutes away outside rush hour by I-275 or by Florida Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard. Someone else should drive you for at least the first week.
Most patients can. Plan rest for the quieter parts of the day and keep early walks away from the site along East Lake and North Central avenues. If noise or porch stairs make home hard, Formation can help arrange a nearby hotel, and Dr. Grandhige visits patients there.
No. Liposuction removes fat, while a tummy tuck removes loose skin and repairs separated muscle. If your skin still recoils and your abdominal wall is intact, liposuction may be all you need.
For select patients, yes. When the muscle is separated but the skin still recoils, Dr. Grandhige can bring the muscles back together with robotic-assisted surgery through three small incisions. With significant loose skin or excess fat, a different treatment usually fits better.

Often, where it refines the flanks and transitions. Florida caps liposuction combined with a tummy tuck at 1,000 cc of supernatant fat when the operation takes place in a physician's office, so larger contouring may be staged into a second operation.
After your last planned pregnancy, once your weight is stable. Cooler months make compression easier, and a Hillsborough County Public Schools winter break often lines up help at home. During hurricane season, have a backup place to recover in case a storm cuts power.

Planning a tummy tuck from Robles Park comes down to three decisions: what your skin and muscle need, whether liposuction belongs in the same operation, and how your home and the nearby construction fit the first week.
