A PDO thread lift raises a softening jawline and loose cheeks with dissolvable threads placed under the skin, in the office, under local anesthesia. You go home the same day, and the collagen the threads trigger keeps firming your skin for months. At Formation on South Howard Avenue, a short drive from Oakford Park, Dr. Gopal Grandhige plans and places every thread himself, and he’ll tell you when threads are the wrong tool for your jawline.
If you’d rather start from home, Hanna, Formation’s patient coordinator, offers a complimentary virtual evaluation. The in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige carries a fee that applies toward any procedure or product.
A PDO thread lift does two jobs. It repositions mildly sagging tissue the day the threads go in, and it prompts your skin to build new collagen as they dissolve. It treats early laxity along the jawline, lower face, midface and neck. It doesn’t remove skin, and it isn’t a facelift.
PDO stands for polydioxanone, an absorbable material surgeons have used in sutures for decades. Lifting threads carry small barbs that grip tissue under the skin and hold it higher. Over the following months your body breaks each thread down and lays collagen along the track it leaves. PDO threads are 510(k)-cleared as absorbable sutures, not FDA-approved.
Formation’s jawline thread lift in Tampa page lists every area threads can treat. This page covers three questions worth settling before an Oakford Park consultation: whether threads fit your jawline, how long the lift lasts, and what threads mean for a facelift later.
Every thread at Formation is planned and placed by Dr. Gopal Grandhige, a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in aesthetic surgery. He earned his MD at the University of Michigan Medical School and began in Yale’s six-year combined plastic surgery residency. He then completed a full general surgery residency and fellowships in burn surgery, critical care, and minimally invasive metabolic and foregut surgery. He has more than 15 years of surgical experience.
That training shows up in thread work. Burn surgery is wound-healing work, and a thread lift is a small, controlled wound whose result depends on how your tissue heals around each track. He keeps his patient volume low, so the surgeon who evaluates you is the one who places your threads and sees you at follow-up.
Threads fix one kind of jawline problem: early laxity in skin that still has spring. A soft jawline usually has more than one cause, so Dr. Grandhige runs the Formation Jawline Fit Check before he recommends threads. It asks four questions.
Skin quality comes first. Pinch the skin under your jaw and let go. If it springs back, it has the elasticity threads and tightening need, which usually means skin behaving somewhere between about 25 and 55 years old.
Then fat. When the blur is a layer of fat under the chin, a thread can only drape skin over it. Liposuction removes it.
Muscle bands are next. Vertical cords that show when you tense your neck are platysmal bands. They call for MyEllevate, a permanent suspension suture, paired with platysmaplasty.
Last is the frame. A short chin or a soft jaw angle reads as a weak jawline at any weight. Projection comes from structural filler such as Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite, or Juvederm, a hyaluronic acid.
Clear all four and threads are a reasonable first move. Moderate laxity often does better with FaceTite, a radiofrequency skin-tightening device, sometimes with threads added for definition. Skin that hangs at rest has to be removed, and no thread will hold it. In that case Formation stays in contact with surgeons who do facelift work well and points you to the right one.
A PDO thread holds tissue only while it’s intact. As it dissolves, the mechanical lift goes with it and the collagen stays. MyEllevate works the other way. The suture is nonabsorbable, it can be removed, and the lift is there the day it’s placed. That’s why platysmal bands get suspension and early laxity gets threads.
One of Dr. Grandhige’s patients, a professional in his 40s, was fit everywhere except his neck and jawline. That one area made him look heavier and older in every photo. He’d always looked that way, and weight loss never touched it. The cause was fat under the chin, the second check above. Threads would have done nothing for it.
Dr. Grandhige performed targeted neck liposuction with jawline contouring, keeping the natural angles of his jaw and avoiding aggressive tightening. Colleagues told him he looked more rested. He said his face finally matched the rest of his body, and he started stepping into photos instead of avoiding them. Same complaint, different problem: only one of the four Fit Check answers is a thread problem.
The lift from a PDO thread is the short-lived part of the result. You’ll often see 12 to 18 months quoted for thread lifts, but published follow-up on the lift itself is shorter.
In a retrospective series of 160 patients treated with barbed PDO threads, the visible improvement faded noticeably by six months and was gone at one year, and the early complication rate was 34 percent. The authors graded their study Level 4 evidence, a retrospective case series. They suggested reserving threads mainly for patients who can’t have more invasive surgery.
The collagen lasts longer. As each thread dissolves, the new collagen along its track keeps refining firmness and texture for three to six months. Treat a thread lift as a skin-quality treatment with a short lift attached, and your expectations will match what the research shows.
A thread lift at Formation takes one consultation, one in-office visit with 15 to 45 minutes of placement, and about a week of careful habits afterward.
The consultation is where the Fit Check happens. Dr. Grandhige evaluates your skin, fat, neck muscles and jaw structure. He asks what you’ve already tried and tells you plainly whether threads will get you where you want to go. The in-office consultation carries a fee because it’s a full surgical assessment, and the fee applies toward any procedure or product at Formation. If you’d like to talk through your goals first, Hanna, Formation’s patient coordinator, offers a complimentary virtual evaluation and outlines a plan before you decide to come in.
Threads are placed in the office under local anesthesia, with no incisions and no general anesthesia. Dr. Grandhige follows a placement plan built around your face and positions the threads where lift and definition matter most. Most patients describe pressure and a tugging sensation more than pain. Placement takes 15 to 45 minutes, depending on how many areas you treat.
For the first 48 to 72 hours, expect tightness and a pulled feeling, and one side may settle faster than the other. Swelling usually peaks around day three. Mild bruising can last 10 to 14 days. Sleep on your back for the first few nights, skip strenuous exercise for about a week, and don’t massage your face while the threads settle. Between weeks four and eight the collagen response builds and the contour sharpens, and it keeps refining for three to six months.
Swelling is the side effect to expect. A meta-analysis of 26 thread-lift studies put its pooled incidence at 35 percent. Next came skin dimpling at 10 percent, altered sensation at 6 percent, visible or palpable threads at 4 percent, and infection and thread extrusion at 2 percent each. Absorbable threads like PDO carried a lower risk of altered sensation than permanent ones. Those figures are averages across many thread types and techniques, so your own risk depends on your anatomy and on who places the threads.
Your body builds the collagen a thread lift depends on, so Formation prepares it first. Dr. Grandhige assesses your health and diet at the consultation. In the window right before and after placement, protein, supplements and peptides are adjusted so your skin can build as much structure as possible along every thread.
This is Dr. Grandhige’s 60/40 Recovery Standard applied to threads. The procedure is about 60 percent of the result, and what happens afterward is the other 40. Poor aftercare can undo well-placed threads the same way it can undo a well-performed surgery. You get clear instructions, scheduled follow-up, and a team that stays in touch while you heal. Formation’s philosophy explains why the practice is built this way.
A PDO thread is a PDO thread at any practice in Tampa. The preparation around it is where results start to differ.
If you expect to want a facelift within the next decade, weigh that before starting threads, and tell every future surgeon you’ve had them. The collagen response that firms your skin also leaves scar tissue along each thread track, which can make the tissue planes of a later facelift harder to work in.
A 2025 expert panel in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum concluded that patients with prior minimally invasive treatments remain facelift candidates when the surgeon plans ahead for those tissue changes. For someone in their 40s with early laxity, that usually isn’t a reason to skip threads. For someone already close to needing skin removed, it’s one more reason to discuss the surgical route first.
Formation is on South Howard Avenue in SoHo, under two miles southeast of Oakford Park. The drive runs east on Kennedy Boulevard to Howard Avenue, then south into SoHo, about 10 minutes outside rush hour.
Oakford Park, first platted in 1910, is one of Tampa’s older neighborhoods. It sits between Dale Mabry Highway and MacDill Avenue, just north of Kennedy Boulevard. Living that close makes follow-up easy in the first weeks, when one side may settle slower than the other or you want the contour checked. Before your consultation, browse the before-and-after gallery to see how Dr. Grandhige treats the neck and jawline: changes people notice without being able to say what was done.
The visible lift is the short-lived part. One published series of 160 patients found it had faded noticeably by six months and was gone at one year. The collagen the threads build keeps refining your skin for three to six months, and that’s the part to plan around.
Threads go in under local anesthesia, and most patients describe pressure and tugging more than pain. Expect tightness for the first 48 to 72 hours and swelling that peaks around day three.
Skip strenuous exercise for about a week, then return to training. Sleep on your back for the first few nights and avoid facial massage while the threads settle.
Not when the double chin is fat, which threads can’t remove. Neck liposuction can. Threads help when the problem is early laxity in skin that still springs back.
PDO threads dissolve, so their lift fades as the thread breaks down. MyEllevate is a permanent suspension suture that doesn’t dissolve, can be removed, and lifts the day it’s placed. Formation pairs it with platysmaplasty when platysmal bands are part of the problem.
It can. Threads leave scar tissue along each track, which can make a later facelift harder to dissect. A 2025 expert panel concluded that patients with prior minimally invasive treatments remain facelift candidates when the surgeon plans for it. Tell any future surgeon about your threads.

A PDO thread lift is a good first move for a jawline that’s just starting to soften, in skin that still springs back. It’s the wrong move for fat, muscle bands, a short chin or hanging skin. The research says to plan around a lift that fades within months while the collagen keeps working.

Six hours. Hundreds of decisions.
High-definition liposuction is as much about precision as it is about technique.
Dr. Gopal can spend 6–7 hours on a single HD liposuction procedure, carefully evaluating the body’s anatomy, refining muscle definition, and making sure each contour transitions naturally into the next.
And that level of attention doesn’t change as the hours go by.
Because the final result is shaped by hundreds of small decisions made throughout the procedure.

Which one surprised you the most? 👀
Liposuction is one of those procedures people have heard a lot about, but not everything they’ve heard is accurate.
From what liposuction can actually achieve to how long results take to develop, there are plenty of misconceptions that can lead to unrealistic expectations.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige, board-certified plastic surgeon at Formation in Tampa, breaks down some of the most common beliefs about liposuction and explains what’s fact and what’s fiction.

This is not your typical liposuction. 👀
Most people think liposuction is simply about removing unwanted fat. But high-definition liposuction takes a different approach.
Before surgery, Dr. Gopal carefully maps out the patient’s natural anatomy, marking the chest, abdomen, and waist to guide where fat will be removed and where it should be preserved.
Why does that matter?
Because removing fat evenly isn’t necessarily going to create definition. HD liposuction uses strategic fat removal to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more sculpted, athletic appearance.
And those lines? They’re part of the planning that makes this level of precision possible.
The photos show an actual patient immediately after surgery. Swelling is still present, and the final results will develop as healing progresses.

Does fat move after lipo?
It’s a common concern, especially when someone notices weight gain in an area that wasn’t treated.
Here’s what actually happens.
The fat cells removed during liposuction are gone permanently. But if someone gains weight afterward, the remaining fat cells can still grow, including in areas that weren’t treated.
The fat didn’t move. The body gained weight.
That’s why Dr. Gopal emphasizes being at a weight patients can realistically maintain before surgery. Not the lowest weight they can reach, but one they can sustain long after recovery.

Want a more sculpted body?
High-definition liposuction takes body contouring a step further. Instead of simply removing excess fat, it focuses on sculpting around the body’s natural muscle structure to create more visible definition and a more athletic contour.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige specializes in HD liposuction, customizing each procedure based on the patient’s anatomy, body shape, and desired level of definition.
Because the goal isn’t to give everyone the same body. It’s to create a result that works with their natural anatomy.

Don’t plan lipo 2 months before vacation.
If the goal is to enjoy a more sculpted, defined body next summer, the planning needs to start months before that.
Fall is one of our busiest seasons at Formation, and there’s a reason for it. Many patients are already thinking about how they want to look and feel next summer.
But getting there takes time.
At Formation, Dr. Gopal requires at least four weeks of preparation before surgery. That time is spent preparing patients physically and mentally for the procedure and recovery.
After surgery, swelling needs to go down, the skin needs to contract, and the tissues need time to settle into their new contour.
It can take 6–9 months for results to look and feel natural.
That’s why Dr. Gopal recommends planning liposuction 6–12 months ahead, especially when there’s a specific season or vacation in mind.
If next summer is the goal, now is the time to start the conversation.

How defined would you go?
Not everyone wants the same look from HD liposuction. Some prefer a smooth, subtle contour, while others want their abs to stand out.
Here’s how the three levels of definition differ:
01. Low definition: A leaner, natural-looking abdomen with subtle definition and light contouring around the underlying muscles.
02. Medium definition: More visible separation between the abdominal muscles, with added definition through the abs and obliques without a sharply etched six-pack.
03. High definition: More pronounced sculpting around the abs and obliques to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more chiseled, athletic look.
Dr. Gopal tailors his HD liposuction technique to the level of definition you’re looking for, while considering what’s achievable for your body.
Which would you choose: 1, 2 or 3? Tell us in the comments!

This isn’t traditional lipo. It’s HD lipo.
For this patient, getting smaller isn’t the goal.
He already works out. He already has the muscle. Dr. Gopal’s job is to use HD liposuction to bring out more of that existing definition and shape the areas around it so the body looks more athletic and defined.
That’s why the markings matter. Before surgery even begins, Dr. Gopal is mapping out how the abs, chest, arms and surrounding areas should work together in the final result.

This is the part of the job that never gets old.
There’s something special about knowing how different a patient’s life might feel on the other side.
Not just because their body may look different, but because of everything that can come with it.
Feeling more comfortable in their own skin.
Saying yes to plans without thinking twice.
Looking forward to summer instead of dreading it.
Plastic surgery can change a body. But sometimes, what matters most is how differently someone gets to experience their life afterward.
And that’s a pretty incredible part of what we get to do at Formation Tampa.

Three small incisions instead of one long one.
For some patients with diastasis recti, repairing the separated abdominal muscles doesn’t necessarily require a traditional tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck makes sense when there’s loose skin that needs to be removed at the same time. But some patients are lean, don’t have much loose skin, and still have that persistent pooch from muscle separation.
For the right patient, Dr. Gopal can repair the diastasis using a minimally invasive robotic approach through three small incisions, about 8 mm each, hidden along the bikini line.
The key is choosing the right procedure for the right anatomy. If there’s significant loose skin or excess fat, repairing the muscles alone may actually make that looseness more noticeable.
That’s why the consultation matters. It’s not just about seeing a belly pooch. It’s about understanding what’s causing it and what actually needs to be addressed.
