Neck liposuction removes the pad of fat under your chin and along your jaw so the jawline underneath becomes visible again. You take an oral sedative, the area gets numbed, and you are back in Pinellas County the same afternoon with somebody else driving.
It removes fat. It does not tighten skin. Almost every neck result that disappoints someone traces back to a surgeon skipping that sentence.

Clench your jaw and watch your neck in a mirror. Two vertical cords rising from the collarbone toward the chin are platysmal bands. Fat removal does nothing to them. Take fat out around active bands and you can make them stand out more than they did before.
Bands are handled with MyEllevate, a permanent suspension suture, often alongside platysmaplasty to bring the muscle edges back together. The suture is nonabsorbable and can be removed if it ever needs to be, which separates it from barbed threads that dissolve on their own schedule and leave nothing to adjust. Pinch a section of neck skin, hold it two seconds, let go. Skin that snaps back handles fat removal on its own. Skin that drifts back slowly needs help in the same visit. Reasonable elasticity generally holds through a skin age of roughly 25 to 55.
When skin needs help, Dr. Grandhige adds Renuvion, a helium plasma radiofrequency device, or FaceTite, a radiofrequency-assisted contouring device. Both are 510(k)-cleared. What separates them is depth of access. They reach the deepest layer of the skin and the fibroseptal network beneath it, the connective tissue scaffolding that holds the contour in place. Lasers and microneedling work from the top down and cannot get to that foundation. Patients who need both steps in one visit are looking at FaceTite in St. Petersburg.
Look at your profile. If the fullness stays put after you clench, you may be looking at a recessed chin or a soft jaw angle rather than fat. No amount of suction changes bone.
Projection gets built with Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite, or Juvederm, a hyaluronic acid, placed to extend the frame your jawline hangs on. This is the layer that produces a superhero jawline when the frame supports it, and the layer that produces a hollow, overdone look when someone suctions instead. Every clinic page calls nerve injury rare. Almost none of them print a number. Here are two that exist.
A case series of 987 neck liposuction patients treated under tumescent local anesthesia by three dermatologic surgeons, published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2018, recorded five cases of temporary marginal mandibular nerve dysfunction, one submandibular gland ptosis, and one arterial bleed. Seroma, skin necrosis, scarring, and hyperpigmentation did not occur anywhere in that group. You can read the 987-patient neck liposuction series yourself.
A second series of 320 patients treated between 2003 and 2011 reported no serious complications at all. Four patients needed closer follow-up: one hematoma, two transient mandibular nerve inflammations, and one temporary globus sensation.
Now the limitation, because a number without one is marketing. Both are retrospective case series from particular practices, not randomized trials, so they describe those surgeons and that technique rather than a national average. Your own risk depends on the hands doing the work. The authors of the 320-case series also make a point most pages skip: neck liposuction under local anesthesia calls for closer patient monitoring than body liposuction, because the working area sits directly over the marginal mandibular nerve and the submandibular glands.
The useful takeaway for a St. Petersburg patient comparing surgeons on both sides of the bay is a pair of questions. Ask what their own complication history looks like, and ask whether they perform the neck awake or asleep. A surgeon who cannot answer either one is telling you something.
Bring a driver. An oral sedative means you are not driving yourself, and from St. Petersburg that is a bridge crossing rather than a ten-minute errand.
Two routes work. Gandy Boulevard crosses the bay and feeds directly into the Selmon Expressway West Extension, which opened in 2021 at Gandy and runs east toward downtown, then off at Exit 4 for Willow Avenue in Hyde Park. The alternative is I-275 over the Howard Frankland and south through the city. Which one is quicker depends on where in St. Petersburg you start and what hour you leave. The Selmon has been all-electronic since 2010, so bring a transponder or expect a bill by plate. Off-peak, plan 30 to 40 minutes each way.
Book a morning slot. The procedure occupies part of a morning, and a morning start puts your ride home ahead of the evening bridge traffic instead of inside it.

A neck case does not need any of that. If a practice proposes an overnight stay for submental liposuction alone, ask what clinical reason drives it.
