What 100 Neck And Jawline Consults Looked Like
Over the last 12 months, Formation logged 100 neck and jawline consultations. The breakdown:
- 58 were candidates for liposuction plus skin tightening in the same visit
- 19 needed liposuction alone, with skin elastic enough to contract on its own
- 13 were told to wait
- 10 were sent elsewhere for a surgical neck lift
- 17 of the 100 came from ZIP codes 33610, 33605, and 33604
The 13 told to wait were mid weight change, had an event booked too close to allow for swelling, or had a health item worth sorting out first. The 10 referred out were mostly Signal Three: visible platysmal bands that a contouring procedure can’t address.
Roughly one in four people who walk in asking for this leaves without a surgery date. That number is the point. A practice that limits volume can afford to say no, and Dr. Grandhige designs every plan himself rather than handing screening to a coordinator. Men make up a large share of these cases, which is why men’s aesthetic surgery is a separate focus at Formation rather than a footnote.
Patients who move forward average five scheduled follow-up visits in year one, four of them inside the first three months. Plan around that number, not around surgery day.
Fat Reduction Alone Is Where Most Disappointment Starts
Injectable fat-reduction treatments permanently destroy fat cells under the chin. They do nothing to skin. If your Signal Two snapback is slow, taking volume out without tightening leaves the same skin draped over less structure, and the result reads softer instead of sharper.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states the general principle plainly in its liposuction candidate guidance: firm, elastic skin produces better results, and skin thinned by aging or weight loss does not reshape as well. Fat is removed carefully, with the natural jaw angles preserved rather than over-etched, because over-resection under the chin creates irregularities and ages badly. Skin tightening is then applied so the skin contours down over the muscle and bone underneath. You go home the same day. No hospital, no general anesthesia.
What follows:
- First few days: mild swelling, bruising, and tightness. A chin compression garment goes on.
- Week 1: back to work and social plans. Garment worn 12 to 24 hours a day.
- Weeks 2 to 4: swelling drops steadily and the liposuction result becomes visible.
- Month 3: skin tightening shows clearly, with real improvement along the jawline.
- Months 6 to 9: final result, once collagen remodeling finishes.
The nine-month tail is the part people underestimate. If you have a wedding, a reunion, or a promotion photo coming, count backward from the event and book accordingly.
Getting To Formation From Live Oaks Square
Five scheduled visits in the first year, roughly 8 miles each way. That’s the real logistical cost of doing this from 33610, and it’s worth knowing before you book rather than after.
Live Oaks Square runs from Hanna Avenue on the north to Hillsborough Avenue on the south, with 30th Street on the west and 40th Street on the east. The Live Oaks Square Neighborhood Association is on the City of Tampa’s neighborhood registry and meets monthly at the Hanna City Center on East Hanna Avenue. About 2,000 people live inside those four streets, and there is no aesthetic surgery practice inside them, which means every option involves leaving the neighborhood.
Driving, take Hillsborough Avenue west to I-275 south and get off at Exit 42. One local quirk trips people up: through that stretch, Armenia Avenue runs one way southbound and Howard Avenue runs one way northbound, so navigation brings you down Armenia and cuts you across to Howard below Kennedy Boulevard. Figure about 20 minutes outside of rush hour, longer when I-275 stacks up through downtown. Ask about parking when you book, because South Howard is tight and the office will tell you where to leave the car.
On transit, Route 34 runs Hillsborough Avenue along the neighborhood’s southern edge, Route 9 runs 30th Street on the western edge, and Route 5 runs 40th Street on the east. Route 14 covers the Armenia and Howard corridor into South Tampa. HART changed schedules on several routes including 34 effective August 12, 2026, so pull current times from HART’s maps and schedules before a post-op appointment rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Formation also sees patients from Northview Hills and other East Tampa neighborhoods in the same ZIP, and the follow-up cadence is identical from all of them.
Who Dr. Grandhige Turns Away
Five situations where the answer is no, or not yet:
- Visible platysmal bands on Signal Three. Contouring won’t touch them.
- Active weight change in either direction. Wait until your weight holds for a few months.
- An event inside three months. Swelling won’t be finished and you’ll be judging an unfinished result.
- Expecting fat removal to correct chin projection. Different problem, different fix.
- Skin that behaves older than it is. This procedure works cleanly on skin with the elasticity typically seen between roughly 25 and 55, and elasticity matters more than the number on your license.
Hearing no at a consultation is a working outcome, not a wasted trip. It’s cheaper than a result you don’t want.
The Surgeon Doing The Work
