Check Three: The Abdominal Wall
Lie flat and lift your head as if starting a sit-up. Run your fingers down the midline. A gap between the muscle edges is diastasis recti, and it is the reason a flat, strong core still pushes forward. No amount of core work closes a true separation. Sutures do.

Where The Surgery Happens Changes What Is Possible
This matters more than most patients realize, and almost no practice page explains it. Florida regulates how much fat can be removed in a physician’s office in a single operation. Under Florida Board of Medicine Rule 64B8-9.009, a maximum of 4,000 cc of supernatant fat may be removed by liposuction in the office setting, and when liposuction is combined with abdominoplasty in that setting, it may not exceed 1,000 cc.
That is a real ceiling. It is also why combined cases get quoted so casually in the Brandon and Riverview corridor and then get scaled back on surgery day. Formation performs abdominoplasty in a Quad A accredited surgical facility rather than an office suite, with the same anesthesia provider and the same surgical staff on every case. Ask any surgeon you consult where your operation will be performed and what that setting permits. The answer changes the plan.
The Formation Staging Line
Dr. Grandhige sorts abdominoplasty patients into one of three paths at consultation, and he tells you which one you are on before you leave.
Path one is abdominoplasty alone. Skin removal and muscle repair, no significant fat removal, for patients whose fat layer is already thin.
Path two is abdominoplasty with limited contouring. Skin removal, muscle repair, and liposuction held to what the setting and the tissue safely allow, used to smooth the transitions into the flanks so the result does not stop abruptly at the incision.
Path three is staged. Larger volume contouring first, then abdominoplasty at a separate sitting once the tissue has settled. Two recoveries instead of one, and a better result than forcing everything into a single operation. You can see how staged and single-stage results differ in the tummy tuck gallery.
Planning The Drive From Riverview
Abdominoplasty is not a one-visit procedure. Between the consultation, pre-op, surgery day, the first post-op visit, garment checks, lymphatic treatments and a year of follow-up, a Riverview patient will make the trip to South Tampa many times. That drive is worth planning once, properly.
Formation sits at 1315 South Howard Avenue, Suite 102, inside the Hyde Park neighborhood. The Selmon Expressway runs west through Hyde Park along the Platt Street corridor, which puts the office a few minutes off the ramps rather than deep in downtown traffic. Riverview drivers reach the Selmon Reversible Express Lanes through the Brandon Parkway feeder, not from the main Selmon ramps.
The schedule changed on July 13, 2026. The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority eliminated the midday split and moved the reversible express lanes to a two-direction model. Westbound toward Tampa now runs 5 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Eastbound toward Brandon runs noon to 5 a.m. Book morning appointments and you get the express lanes going in and the express lanes coming home. Book a 1 p.m. and you are on the general lanes westbound with everyone else.
That is a small thing on a normal day. Eight days after abdominoplasty, sitting upright in a car in a compression garment, it is not a small thing.
What Happens During Surgery
Riverview patients arrive on surgery morning with a driver. Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Excess skin is removed through a low horizontal incision positioned to sit under clothing. If the muscles have separated, the edges are brought back together and sutured. The remaining tissue is redraped and the navel is repositioned. Liposuction is added when the plan calls for it, held within the limits described above.
Dr. Grandhige performs the operation himself from start to close. He also handles the excisional work that sits beyond a standard tummy tuck, including lower body lift and revision abdominoplasty, so patients who need more are not handed off elsewhere.
Recovery Week By Week
Formation treats surgery as roughly 60 percent of the result and aftercare as the other 40 percent. That is the 60/40 Recovery Standard, and it is the reason the timeline below is managed rather than left to you.
A nurse is provided for the first 24 hours at home. The first week is rest, controlled movement and pain management, with help at home recommended. Compression is continuous.
Weeks two and three bring a gradual return to light activity. Most patients go back to work between 10 and 14 days. The drive back to Riverview is manageable by then, though someone else should be at the wheel for the first two weeks. Lymphatic treatment matters most in this window and is scheduled, not optional.
Between weeks four and six swelling drops noticeably and lymphatic treatment continues. Most patients return to unrestricted exercise between six and eight weeks, not before. This is the figure patients most often try to negotiate, and it is the one worth respecting.
From three to six months the final shape keeps refining as residual swelling resolves. Dr. Grandhige follows patients for a full year.
One Riverview-specific note. Compression through a Florida summer is miserable, and the garment does not come off early because the calendar is hot. Patients who can choose their timing often schedule for the cooler months and are happier for it.
What A Tummy Tuck Will Not Do
It will not make you weigh less in any meaningful way. Abdominoplasty is a contouring and structural operation, not a weight loss procedure, and patients who arrive at a stable weight do better than patients still in motion.
It will not leave you without a scar. The incision is permanent. Its position is planned so clothing and swimwear cover it, and that is the honest limit of what can be promised.
It will not hold if your weight swings widely afterward, and it will not survive a future pregnancy intact. Patients still planning children are better served waiting. Those with a smaller amount of lower abdominal skin and no muscle separation may be candidates for a mini tummy tuck instead.
It will not fix upper abdominal fullness that comes from inside the abdominal wall rather than above it. Visceral fat sits behind the muscle. Nothing performed on the outside of the muscle reaches that.
If you have lost a large amount of weight on a GLP-1 medication, the tissue question is the same one everyone else answers, but the timing question is different. Weight needs to be stable and nutrition needs to be adequate before an operation that depends on wound healing. Dr. Grandhige will say wait when waiting is the right answer.

Deciding Whether Now Is The Right Time
Run the three checks yourself tonight. If your skin recoils, there is no standing fold and you feel no midline gap, a tummy tuck is probably not your operation and someone should tell you that before you book anything. If tissue hangs at rest or your fingers sink into a gap along the midline, you have found the problem, and it is a structural one that surgery corrects.
The rest is timing, weight stability, and a realistic look at the calendar for a recovery that runs months rather than weeks. Bring all of it to the consultation. Formation would rather send a Riverview patient home with a plan and no surgery date than book an operation that was never the right answer.
