A PDO thread lift works in two ways at once. It physically lifts sagging skin the day it’s placed, and it starts a collagen response that keeps improving your skin for months.
PDO stands for polydioxanone, a biocompatible suture material the body absorbs over time. Dr. Grandhige inserts the threads through tiny entry points along the jawline, jowls, and neck. Across published research covering thousands of patients, the most common side effects are swelling (reported in roughly 16 to 34% of cases), bruising (around 26%), and pain (about 11%). Minor dimpling or asymmetry shows up in around 7%, while visible threads or temporary numbness sit in the low single digits. Serious problems like infection are rare, near 2%. Outcomes vary widely by technique, which is the real reason who performs the procedure matters.
There’s also the question of longevity. The immediate mechanical lift softens over the months as the threads dissolve. Results commonly last somewhere between 6 and 12 months or more, and they vary by age, skin quality, sun exposure, and provider skill. PDO threads are FDA-cleared, not FDA-approved, and the difference is worth understanding. They are FDA-cleared as Class II devices through the 510(k) pathway for soft tissue approximation and suspension, rather than approved the way a drug or high-risk device is. A lot of clinic copy blurs this line. Knowing the distinction helps you read marketing claims for what they are.
