A tummy tuck removes loose lower-belly skin and repairs abdominal muscles that pulled apart during pregnancy or weight loss. Formation’s South Tampa practice is about 20 miles from Safety Harbor across Old Tampa Bay, and the surgeon who operates on you follows your recovery for a full year.
Abdominoplasty removes skin that no longer springs back, stitches separated abdominal muscles together at the midline, and reshapes what’s left into a flatter, firmer abdomen. Because the wall itself is repaired, many patients also notice better posture and more comfort when they move.
Liposuction removes fat and leaves skin and muscle where they were. A pouch that sits low after two pregnancies won’t respond to more fat removal, and neither will skin that folds over your waistband after a big weight loss. Training can’t fix either one. That’s the gap abdominoplasty at Formation is built to close.
Dr. Grandhige sorts every abdomen with the Formation Tighten-Or-Remove Line before anyone mentions a surgery date. It’s three checks in the exam room.
Check one is recoil. He pinches the skin below the navel and lets go. Skin that returns toward the body still has elasticity to work with. Check two is the standing fold. If skin hangs at rest while you stand with your arms at your sides, the problem is excess skin rather than fat. Check three is the abdominal wall. Pressing along the midline shows whether the muscles have separated, a condition called diastasis recti.
Clear all three and liposuction with energy-based tightening as a finisher is a reasonable plan, with no tummy tuck at all. Fail check one or two and skin has to come out, which means abdominoplasty, with muscle repair added when check three fails too.
The third answer is the one most tummy tuck pages skip. Some lean patients pass the first two checks and fail only the third: firm skin, no fold, and a pooch from muscle separation that core work won’t close. For the right patient, Dr. Grandhige can repair that separation robotically through three small incisions, each about 8 mm, along the bikini line. There’s no hip-to-hip scar and no skin removal. If loose skin or extra fat is present, though, tightening the muscle alone can make the looseness more noticeable. That’s why the first two checks come first.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in aesthetic surgery. He earned his MD at the University of Michigan Medical School and matched into Yale’s six-year combined plastic surgery residency before changing course to a full general surgery residency. Fellowships in burn surgery, critical care, and minimally invasive metabolic and foregut surgery followed. The last of those centered on operating inside the abdomen through small incisions.
He has operated for more than 15 years across several thousand procedures, and he performs revision abdominoplasty, lower body lifts, and 360 contouring himself. You can verify his certification through the American Board of Surgery. He was named a Tampa Magazine Top Doctor in 2024 and 2025, a list built from a peer survey of physicians across Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties. Formation is at 1315 South Howard Avenue in South Tampa. From Safety Harbor, the usual route runs south on McMullen-Booth Road to the Courtney Campbell Causeway, then across Old Tampa Bay into South Tampa. It’s about 20 miles and usually 30 to 40 minutes outside rush hour. Many Formation patients come from Clearwater and St. Petersburg, so the crossing is a familiar one.
Count the trips before you count the miles: the consultation, surgery day, the first post-op visit where lymphatic treatment starts, and follow-ups across twelve months. Formation helps patients recover at nearby partner hotels, and Dr. Grandhige visits them there in the early days so they don’t have to come into the office. A nurse is provided for the first 24 hours.
Safety Harbor saw what a bad season looks like in 2024. Hurricane Debby damaged the pier at Waterfront Park in August, Helene destroyed it in September, and Milton hit the region in October. The rebuilt pier didn’t reopen until August 27, 2026.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and NOAA places the busiest stretch from mid-August through late October. In week one you’re resting with help at home and due back across the bay for follow-up and lymphatic care. An evacuation order, a power outage that takes your air conditioning, or a closed road lands much harder then than in week ten.
Pinellas County assigns evacuation zones A through E by address, and Zone A carries the highest surge risk. Before you hold a date, look up your evacuation zone and decide where you’d recover if your zone is ordered to leave.
For most Safety Harbor patients, December through April solves both problems. Hurricane season is over, and the cooler months make a compression garment far easier to wear around the clock. Compression only works if you can keep it on, and Tampa summer heat is a fair reason on its own to skip a July date.
If a summer or fall date fits your life better, plan the first week on the Tampa side of the bay. A partner hotel near the practice keeps early visits short, and Dr. Grandhige comes to you there.
Florida limits cosmetic surgery done in a physician’s office. Under Board of Medicine Rule 64B8-9.009, liposuction alone is capped at 4,000 cc of supernatant fat in that setting, the cap drops to 1,000 cc when it’s paired with an abdominoplasty, and planned elective cosmetic cases can’t run past eight hours. Those limits govern office surgery suites rather than hospitals or licensed ambulatory surgical centers, so ask any surgeon which kind of facility your plan is built for.
The safety data on combining procedures has shifted. Both studies below draw on CosmetAssure, an insurance program that covers major complications after cosmetic surgery. A 2024 analysis of more than 55,000 abdominoplasties from 2015 to 2022 found a 2.1 percent major complication rate, highest for fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty, the version that adds a vertical scar. Adding other cosmetic procedures didn’t raise major-complication risk. An earlier analysis covering 2008 to 2013, published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2015, found a 4.0 percent rate and higher risk with combined procedures. Both count only major complications filed as claims, so problems handled in the office never appear in either number.
The Formation Staging Line weighs both. When your flanks, back, and abdomen fit safely inside one sitting, liposuction with a tummy tuck in one operation is the call. When they don’t, the work is split across two operations in the order your tissue calls for. Staging means two recoveries and two rounds of compression. In exchange, no single operation presses against a limit.
The in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige is a full surgical assessment. He runs the three checks, reviews your health history, and tells you which operation fits. That could be a mini tummy tuck for a small amount of lower skin, a full abdominoplasty with muscle repair, the robotic muscle repair, or a staged plan with liposuction. When surgery is the wrong move right now, he says so.
That consultation carries a fee, and the fee applies toward any procedure or product at Formation. If you’d rather not cross the bay before you know you’re a candidate, start with the complimentary virtual evaluation with patient coordinator Hanna. She reviews your goals and outlines a plan before you come in.
Preparation starts once your date is set. Your health and diet are assessed first, with screening that covers your medical history, recent labs, and a risk assessment. Nutrition, supplements, and peptides are then adjusted in the window immediately before and after surgery, so your body builds the most structure it can while it heals. You leave with protein guidance, a compression plan, and recovery logistics mapped out, including where you’ll stay if home is across the bay.
The instrument on the tray is the same at every practice. What differs is the thinking around it.
Surgery takes place in a Quad A accredited facility with an anesthesia plan built for you. Dr. Grandhige works with the same anesthesia provider and surgical staff on every case, and a physician assistant he employs directly assists on all of his operations.
In a full tummy tuck, the incision runs low across the abdomen, often hip to hip, just above the pubic hairline, so the scar usually sits under underwear and most swimwear. Excess skin comes out, separated muscles are repaired, and the navel is brought through a new opening. Some cases need no drains. A no-drain tummy tuck is closed with progressive tension sutures that tack the skin to the abdominal wall and shrink the space where fluid collects. Whether your anatomy suits it is decided at the exam.
Surgery is 60 percent of your result. Post-operative care is the other 40, and the wrong care can undo a well-performed operation. That’s why Formation owns recovery instead of handing it off, a choice rooted in the practice’s philosophy.
The first week is rest, short walks, pain control, and help at home. Lymphatic treatment starts at your first post-op visit, and if a fluid pocket called a seroma forms, it’s drained in the office.
In weeks two and three you return to light activity with your compression garment on, and many patients go back to work after 10 to 14 days. Lymphatic care continues through weeks four to six. Unrestricted exercise returns between six and eight weeks, and your shape keeps refining for three to six months. Dr. Grandhige follows patients for a full year, and nearly all of them stay in touch the whole way.
Once you’re cleared for longer walks, the waterfront is close. The Bayshore Linear Greenway runs about two miles from the Clearwater city line, through Waterfront Park, to Philippe Park. Philippe Park is shaded by large oaks along about a mile of Old Tampa Bay shoreline. In summer, go early, because shade matters more when you’re wearing compression.
Strong candidates have finished their pregnancies or major weight changes, hold a stable weight, and are bothered by loose skin or a bulge that training hasn’t moved.
Wait if your weight is still changing, since the result holds only as long as the weight does. Hold off, too, if another pregnancy is in your plans. If your concern is overall body fat rather than skin or the wall, this is the wrong operation. And if you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, tell the team early, because these drugs slow stomach emptying and that matters for anesthesia planning.
One Formation patient had finished her pregnancies and held a steady weight. Exercise had made her stronger, but the loose skin and separated muscle stayed. She brought her daughters to the consultation and joked that they should pay for it, since they caused it. After an abdominoplasty with muscle repair, she reported better posture and less back discomfort. She used to arrive at follow-ups in loose sweatpants. Now she comes in dressed up.
When you study any tummy tuck gallery, Formation’s included, look for patients whose before photos look like you.
Does fat move after lipo?
It’s a common concern, especially when someone notices weight gain in an area that wasn’t treated.
Here’s what actually happens.
The fat cells removed during liposuction are gone permanently. But if someone gains weight afterward, the remaining fat cells can still grow, including in areas that weren’t treated.
The fat didn’t move. The body gained weight.
That’s why Dr. Gopal emphasizes being at a weight patients can realistically maintain before surgery. Not the lowest weight they can reach, but one they can sustain long after recovery.

Want a more sculpted body?
High-definition liposuction takes body contouring a step further. Instead of simply removing excess fat, it focuses on sculpting around the body’s natural muscle structure to create more visible definition and a more athletic contour.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige specializes in HD liposuction, customizing each procedure based on the patient’s anatomy, body shape, and desired level of definition.
Because the goal isn’t to give everyone the same body. It’s to create a result that works with their natural anatomy.

Don’t plan lipo 2 months before vacation.
If the goal is to enjoy a more sculpted, defined body next summer, the planning needs to start months before that.
Fall is one of our busiest seasons at Formation, and there’s a reason for it. Many patients are already thinking about how they want to look and feel next summer.
But getting there takes time.
At Formation, Dr. Gopal requires at least four weeks of preparation before surgery. That time is spent preparing patients physically and mentally for the procedure and recovery.
After surgery, swelling needs to go down, the skin needs to contract, and the tissues need time to settle into their new contour.
It can take 6–9 months for results to look and feel natural.
That’s why Dr. Gopal recommends planning liposuction 6–12 months ahead, especially when there’s a specific season or vacation in mind.
If next summer is the goal, now is the time to start the conversation.

How defined would you go?
Not everyone wants the same look from HD liposuction. Some prefer a smooth, subtle contour, while others want their abs to stand out.
Here’s how the three levels of definition differ:
01. Low definition: A leaner, natural-looking abdomen with subtle definition and light contouring around the underlying muscles.
02. Medium definition: More visible separation between the abdominal muscles, with added definition through the abs and obliques without a sharply etched six-pack.
03. High definition: More pronounced sculpting around the abs and obliques to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more chiseled, athletic look.
Dr. Gopal tailors his HD liposuction technique to the level of definition you’re looking for, while considering what’s achievable for your body.
Which would you choose: 1, 2 or 3? Tell us in the comments!

This isn’t traditional lipo. It’s HD lipo.
For this patient, getting smaller isn’t the goal.
He already works out. He already has the muscle. Dr. Gopal’s job is to use HD liposuction to bring out more of that existing definition and shape the areas around it so the body looks more athletic and defined.
That’s why the markings matter. Before surgery even begins, Dr. Gopal is mapping out how the abs, chest, arms and surrounding areas should work together in the final result.

This is the part of the job that never gets old.
There’s something special about knowing how different a patient’s life might feel on the other side.
Not just because their body may look different, but because of everything that can come with it.
Feeling more comfortable in their own skin.
Saying yes to plans without thinking twice.
Looking forward to summer instead of dreading it.
Plastic surgery can change a body. But sometimes, what matters most is how differently someone gets to experience their life afterward.
And that’s a pretty incredible part of what we get to do at Formation Tampa.

Three small incisions instead of one long one.
For some patients with diastasis recti, repairing the separated abdominal muscles doesn’t necessarily require a traditional tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck makes sense when there’s loose skin that needs to be removed at the same time. But some patients are lean, don’t have much loose skin, and still have that persistent pooch from muscle separation.
For the right patient, Dr. Gopal can repair the diastasis using a minimally invasive robotic approach through three small incisions, about 8 mm each, hidden along the bikini line.
The key is choosing the right procedure for the right anatomy. If there’s significant loose skin or excess fat, repairing the muscles alone may actually make that looseness more noticeable.
That’s why the consultation matters. It’s not just about seeing a belly pooch. It’s about understanding what’s causing it and what actually needs to be addressed.

The last one got 11/10.
Some of the biggest factors affecting liposuction results have nothing to do with what happens in the operating room.
Dr. Gopal rates 13 factors that can influence the final result, from working out before surgery and maintaining a stable weight to compression garments, skin elasticity, and lymphatic massage.
A few of his ratings might surprise you.
For example, he rates skin elasticity a 10/10 because even after the fat is removed, the skin still needs to contract and settle over the new contour.
And lymphatic massage? He gives it an 11/10 because of the role it plays in his recovery protocol, helping manage swelling and supporting how the skin settles over the newly sculpted areas.
The takeaway: great liposuction results depend on more than the surgery itself.
Patient preparation, anatomy, recovery, and long-term weight maintenance all play a role.

Formation is at 1315 South Howard Avenue in South Tampa, about 20 miles from Safety Harbor. The usual route crosses Old Tampa Bay on the Courtney Campbell Causeway and takes 30 to 40 minutes outside rush hour.
December through April avoids hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30, and the summer heat that makes round-the-clock compression hard to tolerate. If you need a summer or fall date, plan your first week at a partner hotel near the practice.
Look up your Pinellas County evacuation zone before you hold a date, and decide where you'd recover if your zone is ordered to leave. Recovering at a partner hotel near the practice keeps early visits short, and Dr. Grandhige visits patients there in the first days.
Not always. Lean patients with firm skin and no hanging fold may be candidates for a robotic repair through three small bikini-line incisions, each about 8 mm. If loose skin or extra fat is present, repairing the muscle alone can make that looseness more noticeable.
Often, yes. When your flanks, back, and abdomen fit safely inside one sitting, Dr. Grandhige does both together. When they don't, he stages the work across two operations in the order your tissue calls for.
A 2024 analysis of more than 55,000 abdominoplasties in the CosmetAssure database found a 2.1 percent major complication rate, meaning a hospital admission, emergency room visit, or reoperation within 45 days. It counts only complications filed as insurance claims, so smaller problems handled in the office aren't included.
Many patients return to work after 10 to 14 days. Unrestricted exercise returns between six and eight weeks, and your shape keeps refining for three to six months.
The in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige carries a fee, and it applies toward any procedure or product at Formation. The complimentary virtual evaluation with patient coordinator Hanna lets you review your goals before you make the drive.
Four decisions matter more than the 20-mile drive: whether your abdomen needs removal, repair, or only the small-incision muscle repair; whether your plan fits one operation or two; whether your date clears peak storm season and summer heat; and where you’ll spend the first week.
At Formation, one board-certified general surgeon makes those calls with you, operates in a Quad A accredited facility, and follows your recovery for twelve months. If you want answers before you cross the bay, start with the complimentary virtual evaluation with Hanna. The in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige carries a fee, applies toward any procedure or product, and covers your full candidacy review.
