Search the term and you’ll get directory pages, and those directories pull surgeons from Brandon, Tampa and Sun City Center, then sort them by star rating rather than by what any of them actually operate on.
So the real decision was never Riverview versus elsewhere. It’s which practice in the wider Hillsborough market earns the trip.
The trip is short. From the Winthrop Town Centre area it’s about 15 miles to South Howard Avenue. From Big Bend Road or the southern edge of Riverview it’s closer to 20. The route is the same either way: I-75 north, then the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway west, exiting toward Howard Avenue. Outside rush hour most Riverview patients are parked in under half an hour.
Distance matters more after surgery than before it, which is the part directory listings never address. A consultation is one drive. Recovery is several, on a schedule you don’t fully control. That’s covered further down, because it should shape which practice you pick.
Riverview patients most often come in for high-definition liposuction, abdominoplasty, and neck and jawline contouring.
The Board Question Riverview Directories Skip
Directory pages file surgeons under “plastic surgery” without telling you which board certified them. Three different boards show up across this market, and they don’t cover the same ground. Nobody explains the difference, so here it is.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He is not a plastic surgeon and doesn’t call himself one. He attended medical school at the University of Michigan and matched into the six-year combined plastic surgery residency at Yale, then changed course into a full general surgery residency followed by fellowship training in burn surgery, critical care, and minimally invasive metabolic and foregut surgery. He’s been operating for over 15 years across several thousand cases.
That path is unusual in aesthetics, and it’s the reason his practice is built the way it is. Burn and critical care work is training in wound healing, inflammation and tissue behavior under stress. Those are the same variables that decide whether a contouring result holds its shape at three years or collapses at three months.

Where The Surgery Actually Happens
Setting is one of the questions Riverview patients ask most and find answered least. It’s split by procedure.
Operations under general anesthesia are performed in Quad A accredited surgical facilities. Quad A accreditation is the outpatient standard covering sterilization, emergency protocols, staff credentialing and ongoing inspection. Dr. Grandhige works with the same anesthesia provider on every case and the same operating room staff, and his own employed physician assistant scrubs in on all of his surgeries. A team that knows one surgeon’s methods moves faster and catches more.
Neck and jawline contouring is done in the office on South Howard, which is why that procedure doesn’t require general anesthesia or a facility day.
The 60/40 Recovery Standard
Formation treats the operation as 60 percent of the result and post-operative care as the other 40. Incorrect aftercare can undo a well-performed surgery, which is why recovery here is managed rather than waited out.
That standard starts before the operation, not after it. Health and diet are assessed ahead of treatment, and nutrition, supplements and peptides are adjusted in the window immediately before and immediately after so the body builds as much structure as it can while it’s healing. Compression, mobility, protein intake and lymphatic flow are then handled on a schedule, with lymphatic treatment beginning at the first post-operative visit rather than weeks later.
Every practice in Hillsborough County can buy the same cannula and the same radiofrequency handpiece. The instrument is identical. The thinking around it isn’t.
Procedures Performed At Formation
Formation doesn’t offer every cosmetic procedure. The list is narrow deliberately, concentrated on the areas where surgical precision and recovery strategy change the outcome most.
High-Definition Liposuction And Body Contouring
High-definition liposuction removes fat selectively rather than in bulk, so the muscle structure underneath becomes visible. It’s a finishing tool for people already at or near their goal weight, not a weight-loss procedure. Treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks, back, chest, arms and thighs, and Lipo360 addresses the full circumference of the torso in one operation.
Male body contouring and gynecomastia surgery follow a different aesthetic logic than female contouring. Chest, abdomen and flank have to resolve together or the chest reads feminized. Dr. Grandhige’s known emphasis is clean, flat male chest contours and avoiding over-resection.
Abdominoplasty And Loose Skin
Liposuction removes fat. It doesn’t remove skin and it doesn’t repair a separated abdominal wall. Deciding between them is what the Formation Tighten-Or-Remove Line is for, and it’s three checks:
Recoil. Pinch the skin, release it, and watch whether it returns toward the body. Second, the standing fold: does skin hang at rest, without you moving. Third, the abdominal wall: is there muscle separation from pregnancy or weight change. Clear all three and energy-based tightening is a reasonable finisher on top of liposuction. Fail the second or third and you’re looking at abdominoplasty, where excess skin is removed and separated muscle repaired.
Most people arrive assuming they want the smaller procedure. The line exists so that assumption gets tested before anything gets scheduled.
Neck And Jawline Contouring
Neck and jawline work at Formation happens in the office, not in an operating room. It’s performed with an oral sedative and local anesthesia through very small incisions under the chin and behind the ears. Fat is removed to sharpen the jaw while natural angles are preserved, then FaceTite, a radiofrequency contraction device, or Renuvion, a helium plasma tightening device, contracts the skin down over the muscle and bone underneath. Both work beneath the skin surface, which is how they reach tissue that lasers and microneedling can’t get to from above.
Skin quality sets the ceiling here. The window where tightening does its best work runs roughly from skin age 25 to 55.
What Gets Referred Out
Some necks and some bodies are past what contouring and tightening can reach. A neck with heavy skin excess needs a formal lift with skin excision, and that isn’t what this practice does. Same for facelifts, breast surgery and rhinoplasty. Formation stays in contact with surgeons who do that work well and points patients to the right one rather than performing a smaller operation that won’t hold.
The exception is skin removal on the body. Abdominoplasty, lower body lift, 360 contouring and revision cases are performed here by Dr. Grandhige.
Recovery And The Drive Back To Riverview
Timelines differ by what was operated on, so here they are separately.
- Liposuction and body contouring. The first 48 to 72 hours bring swelling, soreness and drainage, with early walking encouraged. Week one is continuous compression and no work, and lymphatic treatment starts at the first post-operative visit. Weeks two to four bring steady improvement. Most patients are back in the gym within one to two weeks and training without restriction between weeks two and four as long as the garment stays on. Definition emerges between 6 and 12 weeks, final contour settles between 3 and 6 months, and skin pliability and sensation return over 6 to 12 months.
- Abdominoplasty. A nurse is provided for the first 24 hours. Most patients return to work after 10 to 14 days and to training at six to eight weeks.
- Neck and jawline. The first few days bring mild swelling, bruising and tightness with a chin compression garment. At one week patients are back at work and back to training, wearing the garment 12 to 24 hours a day. Swelling settles across weeks two to four and the fat removal becomes visible. Skin tightening shows at three months. The final result lands between six and nine months.
For a Riverview patient, the visit that matters logistically is the first post-operative one, since that’s when lymphatic treatment begins and you shouldn’t be driving yourself. Arrange a driver for that trip specifically. Formation also holds negotiated rates at hotels near the office and Dr. Grandhige visits patients in their room during the early days, which is built for out-of-state travel but is available if stacking the drive onto a difficult week isn’t workable.

It’s a full surgical assessment covering anatomical evaluation, candidacy, honest discussion of limits and alternatives, and guidance on timing, and the fee can be applied toward any procedure or product at the practice.
