Neck Liposuction In Citrus Park, FL
Neck liposuction removes the stubborn fat under your chin and along your jaw through a few small incisions, so the line between your face and neck shows again. At Formation, Dr. Gopal Grandhige, a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in aesthetic surgery, performs it in the office under local anesthesia with an oral sedative. He then tightens the skin over the new contour. Most patients are back at work after one week. Citrus Park sits in unincorporated northwest Hillsborough County, about 15 miles from Tampa.
What Neck Liposuction Fixes and What It Can’t
Neck liposuction fixes fat. It’s built for the double chin that stayed put through dieting and training, in someone whose skin still springs back. Dr. Grandhige’s best candidates usually have a skin age of roughly 25 to 55. They’re bothered by a soft jawline and want a sharp, natural result instead of a tight, pulled one.
Genetics and aging shape this area heavily, and fullness here can make a fit person look heavier or older than they feel. One patient, a professional in his 40s, told Dr. Grandhige he had always looked this way and hated seeing himself in pictures. After treatment, coworkers said he looked rested. He now gets in photos and says his face finally matches the rest of his body.
Liposuction can’t tighten a muscle, build a weak chin or remove hanging skin. So the consultation starts with a read of the whole neck, not a plan for fat removal. When you browse our before-and-after gallery, Dr. Grandhige suggests looking for patients whose starting point looks like yours.
The Four-Layer Neck Read
Most necks show aging in more than one layer at once. Dr. Grandhige checks four of them before recommending anything, and each layer has its own fix. Treat the wrong layer and the result disappoints, even when the surgery itself went well.
Layer One: Fat
This is the only layer liposuction treats. Dr. Grandhige removes fat conservatively and keeps the natural angles of the jaw. Over-aggressive removal leaves irregularities and can age the neck early.
Layer Two: Platysma Muscle and Platysmal Bands
The platysma is the thin sheet of muscle under the skin of your neck. When its edges separate, they show as vertical cords called platysmal bands. Fat can hide bands, and removing that fat can make them more visible. Where bands are present, the answer is platysmaplasty with MyEllevate, a permanent suspension suture, not more suction.
Layer Three: Skin and the Fibroseptal Network
The fibroseptal network is the connective tissue that anchors skin to the muscle beneath it. Renuvion, a helium plasma energy device, treats the deepest layer of the skin and that network from underneath. FaceTite, a radiofrequency-assisted device, also works from below the skin. Lasers and microneedling work from the surface down and can’t reach that foundation.
Layer Four: Chin Projection and Jaw Angle
Some necks look soft because the chin sits back, and no amount of suction fixes that. Structural filler can add projection at the chin or definition at the jaw angle. The options are Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite, or Juvederm, a hyaluronic acid. This is the layer that turns a slimmer neck into what patients call a superhero jawline, and our injectables team handles it.
Sometimes the read shows a problem none of these fixes can reach, such as heavy, hanging skin that has to be cut away. Then Formation refers you to a surgeon who does that work well and stays in contact with you through it.
Six hours. Hundreds of decisions.
High-definition liposuction is as much about precision as it is about technique.
Dr. Gopal can spend 6–7 hours on a single HD liposuction procedure, carefully evaluating the body’s anatomy, refining muscle definition, and making sure each contour transitions naturally into the next.
And that level of attention doesn’t change as the hours go by.
Because the final result is shaped by hundreds of small decisions made throughout the procedure.

This is not your typical liposuction. 👀
Most people think liposuction is simply about removing unwanted fat. But high-definition liposuction takes a different approach.
Before surgery, Dr. Gopal carefully maps out the patient’s natural anatomy, marking the chest, abdomen, and waist to guide where fat will be removed and where it should be preserved.
Why does that matter?
Because removing fat evenly isn’t necessarily going to create definition. HD liposuction uses strategic fat removal to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more sculpted, athletic appearance.
And those lines? They’re part of the planning that makes this level of precision possible.
The photos show an actual patient immediately after surgery. Swelling is still present, and the final results will develop as healing progresses.

Does fat move after lipo?
It’s a common concern, especially when someone notices weight gain in an area that wasn’t treated.
Here’s what actually happens.
The fat cells removed during liposuction are gone permanently. But if someone gains weight afterward, the remaining fat cells can still grow, including in areas that weren’t treated.
The fat didn’t move. The body gained weight.
That’s why Dr. Gopal emphasizes being at a weight patients can realistically maintain before surgery. Not the lowest weight they can reach, but one they can sustain long after recovery.

Want a more sculpted body?
High-definition liposuction takes body contouring a step further. Instead of simply removing excess fat, it focuses on sculpting around the body’s natural muscle structure to create more visible definition and a more athletic contour.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige specializes in HD liposuction, customizing each procedure based on the patient’s anatomy, body shape, and desired level of definition.
Because the goal isn’t to give everyone the same body. It’s to create a result that works with their natural anatomy.

Don’t plan lipo 2 months before vacation.
If the goal is to enjoy a more sculpted, defined body next summer, the planning needs to start months before that.
Fall is one of our busiest seasons at Formation, and there’s a reason for it. Many patients are already thinking about how they want to look and feel next summer.
But getting there takes time.
At Formation, Dr. Gopal requires at least four weeks of preparation before surgery. That time is spent preparing patients physically and mentally for the procedure and recovery.
After surgery, swelling needs to go down, the skin needs to contract, and the tissues need time to settle into their new contour.
It can take 6–9 months for results to look and feel natural.
That’s why Dr. Gopal recommends planning liposuction 6–12 months ahead, especially when there’s a specific season or vacation in mind.
If next summer is the goal, now is the time to start the conversation.

How defined would you go?
Not everyone wants the same look from HD liposuction. Some prefer a smooth, subtle contour, while others want their abs to stand out.
Here’s how the three levels of definition differ:
01. Low definition: A leaner, natural-looking abdomen with subtle definition and light contouring around the underlying muscles.
02. Medium definition: More visible separation between the abdominal muscles, with added definition through the abs and obliques without a sharply etched six-pack.
03. High definition: More pronounced sculpting around the abs and obliques to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more chiseled, athletic look.
Dr. Gopal tailors his HD liposuction technique to the level of definition you’re looking for, while considering what’s achievable for your body.
Which would you choose: 1, 2 or 3? Tell us in the comments!

This isn’t traditional lipo. It’s HD lipo.
For this patient, getting smaller isn’t the goal.
He already works out. He already has the muscle. Dr. Gopal’s job is to use HD liposuction to bring out more of that existing definition and shape the areas around it so the body looks more athletic and defined.
That’s why the markings matter. Before surgery even begins, Dr. Gopal is mapping out how the abs, chest, arms and surrounding areas should work together in the final result.

This is the part of the job that never gets old.
There’s something special about knowing how different a patient’s life might feel on the other side.
Not just because their body may look different, but because of everything that can come with it.
Feeling more comfortable in their own skin.
Saying yes to plans without thinking twice.
Looking forward to summer instead of dreading it.
Plastic surgery can change a body. But sometimes, what matters most is how differently someone gets to experience their life afterward.
And that’s a pretty incredible part of what we get to do at Formation Tampa.

Three small incisions instead of one long one.
For some patients with diastasis recti, repairing the separated abdominal muscles doesn’t necessarily require a traditional tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck makes sense when there’s loose skin that needs to be removed at the same time. But some patients are lean, don’t have much loose skin, and still have that persistent pooch from muscle separation.
For the right patient, Dr. Gopal can repair the diastasis using a minimally invasive robotic approach through three small incisions, about 8 mm each, hidden along the bikini line.
The key is choosing the right procedure for the right anatomy. If there’s significant loose skin or excess fat, repairing the muscles alone may actually make that looseness more noticeable.
That’s why the consultation matters. It’s not just about seeing a belly pooch. It’s about understanding what’s causing it and what actually needs to be addressed.

What 2026 Research Says About Risk
Minor problems after neck liposuction are more common than the usual rare-risks line suggests, and serious ones are uncommon. A 2026 systematic review of aesthetic submental liposuction pooled 13 studies covering 2,085 cases and counted 270 adverse events, about 12.9% per procedure. Most were minor and were managed in outpatient settings.
Read that number with its limitation attached. The review drew only on case reports and case series, not controlled studies. So the rate can’t be applied to any single surgeon’s results.
One finding shapes follow-up. The events in that review showed up an average of about 1.7 months after surgery, well past the first week or two of recovery. Dr. Grandhige follows patients for a full year, and nearly all of them stay in touch the whole time.
Neck Liposuction After GLP-1 Weight Loss
If you lost weight quickly on semaglutide or a similar medication, the fullness under your chin may now be loose skin and bands rather than fat. A review of GLP-1 medications in esthetic medicine notes that rapid weight reduction often brings skin laxity and contour irregularities. A separate dermatology review lists visible platysmal bands among the changes.
That moves the read toward layers two and three. Liposuction alone can make a deflated neck look worse, so Dr. Grandhige may recommend tightening, band treatment or waiting. If bands bother you before you’re ready for surgery, Botox can relax them temporarily.
Dr. Grandhige also asks patients to reach a weight they can realistically hold, not the lowest number they can hit. The fat cells he removes don’t come back, but the ones left behind can still grow if weight returns.
Procedure Day at Formation
Neck liposuction at Formation is a shorter, in-office procedure. You take an oral anxiety medication, and Dr. Grandhige numbs the area with local anesthesia, so there’s no general anesthesia. If you’ve read about awake liposuction, this is the same idea applied to the neck.
He works through very small incisions under the chin and behind the ears. Fat comes out carefully to sharpen the jawline while the natural angles stay intact. Then Renuvion or FaceTite tightens the skin so it contracts over the muscle and bone underneath. Dr. Grandhige personally performs the procedure, and his own physician assistant assists on all of his surgeries.
The oral sedative means someone else drives you home. From Citrus Park, that’s a round trip on a toll road for whoever takes you. Line up your driver when you book, not the night before.
Recovery Timeline
Most patients are back at work in one week, and the final result settles between six and nine months.
First few days: Expect mild swelling, bruising and a tight feeling. You’ll wear a chin compression garment.
One week: You’re back at work, social plans and training. Keep the chin garment on 12 to 24 hours a day. The Upper Tampa Bay Trail runs through Citrus Park if you want a close-to-home place to restart walks or runs.
Two to four weeks: Swelling keeps going down, and the fat removal becomes visible.
Three months: Skin tightening shows, with a clear improvement along the jawline.
Six to nine months: The final result appears as tightening finishes.
Plan events backward from that window. A neck treated in late October 2026 reaches its final result between late April and late July 2027. That’s why Dr. Grandhige raises wedding and vacation timing at the first visit.
Preparation and the 60/40 Recovery Standard
Dr. Grandhige puts recovery in numbers: surgery is about 60% of the result and post-op care is the other 40%. Incorrect care after surgery can ruin a well-performed operation. So Formation runs its own recovery instead of handing you an instruction sheet.
Preparation starts before the procedure. Your health and diet are assessed first. Nutrition, supplements and peptides are then adjusted in the window immediately before and after treatment, so your body builds as much new structure as it can while the skin contracts. Dr. Grandhige asks for at least four weeks of preparation before liposuction. After surgery, he relies on nutrition, coaching and lymphatic providers he has vetted personally.
That’s the philosophy behind Formation: fewer patients, more involvement with each one. The cannula and the energy device are the same at every practice. The thinking around them isn’t.
Getting to Formation From Citrus Park
Formation is at 1315 South Howard Avenue, Suite 102, in South Tampa’s SoHo area. Most Citrus Park patients take the Veterans Expressway, which crosses the community north to south and has an interchange at Gunn Highway. It’s a toll road.
Heading south, the expressway ends at I-275 near Tampa International Airport. From Westshore, Kennedy Boulevard runs east into SoHo. South Howard runs one way northbound through SoHo, so southbound drivers come down Armenia Avenue and cut over. Dale Mabry Highway is the toll-free alternative.
Citrus Park patients can recover at home. Out-of-town patients stay in nearby hotels, where Dr. Grandhige visits them in the early days. The same drive repeats across a year of follow-up visits, so ask for midday appointments that miss the commuter rush.
Why Patients Choose Dr. Grandhige
Dr. Grandhige is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in aesthetic surgery. You can confirm his certification through the American Board of Surgery. He earned his medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School and began his surgical training at Yale. He then completed a full general surgery residency and fellowships in burn surgery, critical care, and minimally invasive metabolic and foregut surgery.
More than 15 years and several thousand operations taught him how tissue heals and how inflammation behaves. That shapes how much he removes and when he stops. He calls jawline contouring one of the most underestimated procedures in aesthetic surgery, because done well it changes how people see you without anyone knowing why. He has been named a Tampa Magazine Top Doctor every year from 2023 through 2026. Read more about Dr. Gopal Grandhige and his training.

Frequently Asked Questions
Formation is about 11 miles in a straight line from Citrus Park Town Center, the mall formerly called Westfield Citrus Park. Most patients drive the Veterans Expressway, a toll road, or use Dale Mabry Highway to skip tolls. Plan on a driver for procedure day.
Dr. Grandhige removes fat conservatively, keeps the natural jaw angles and avoids a tight, over-pulled look. The comment patients tend to get is that they look rested or fit, without anyone guessing they had surgery.
Most patients return to work, social plans and training at one week. You’ll still wear the chin compression garment 12 to 24 hours a day at that point.
Tightening is part of how Dr. Grandhige performs the procedure. After removing fat, he uses Renuvion or FaceTite so the skin contracts over the new contour. Skin elasticity, usually workable between skin ages of roughly 25 and 55, sets how far tightening can go.
Possibly, but the problem may have shifted from fat to skin and bands. Dr. Grandhige checks all four layers and asks that your weight be one you can maintain before he removes fat.
Results are long-lasting. The fat cells removed don’t return, though weight gain can enlarge the ones left behind. Aging continues, but removing excess fat here can slow how soon new laxity shows.
A 2026 systematic review of 2,085 cases found adverse events in about 12.9% of procedures, most of them minor and managed in outpatient settings. The review relied on case reports and case series, so it isn’t a controlled rate.
Yes. The in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige is a full surgical assessment and carries a fee, which can be applied toward any procedure or product at Formation. You can also start with a complimentary virtual evaluation by video with patient coordinator Hanna.
