Tummy Tuck In Rivercrest, FL
Muscle repair, skin removal and a recovery your surgeon runs in-house, a short drive south of the Hillsborough River.
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes loose skin from the lower abdomen, repairs separated abdominal muscles and repositions the belly button on a flatter surface. It’s built for skin and muscle problems. It won’t fix fat on its own, and it isn’t a weight-loss tool. For Rivercrest residents, surgery and every follow-up visit happen at Formation on South Howard Avenue. The walking that drives your first week of recovery can start at Rivercrest Park.
What a Tummy Tuck Does, and What It Cannot Do
A tummy tuck fixes structure. It removes loose or damaged skin below the navel and repairs muscle separation, called diastasis recti. It also restores the core integrity that pregnancy or large weight changes can take away. Because the muscle repair restores function along with shape, many patients notice better posture and more comfort when they move.
Fat is a different problem. If your skin is firm and the only issue is a stubborn layer of fat, high-definition liposuction is usually the better fit, and it leaves no long incision. Many plans use both, with liposuction refining the waist and flanks while the tummy tuck handles skin and muscle. Dr. Grandhige designs that split himself at your consultation.
Adding Liposuction: The Florida Rule That Shapes Your Plan
Florida law limits how much fat can come out during a tummy tuck performed in an office surgery setting, and most tummy tuck pages never mention it. Under Florida’s office surgery rule, liposuction alone in an office setting can remove up to 4,000 cc of supernatant fat, but the ceiling drops to 1,000 cc when liposuction is combined with an abdominoplasty. The same rule caps the planned length of all elective cosmetic procedures performed together in a physician’s office at 8 hours.
That matters if you’re picturing a tummy tuck plus heavy flank, back and waist contouring on the same day. Depending on where your surgery takes place and how much contouring you need, the work may happen in one session or in stages. Dr. Grandhige stages or combines procedures deliberately and tells you which applies before anything is scheduled. Formation’s page on abdominoplasty and liposuction covers how the two work together.
What Happens During Surgery
Dr. Grandhige removes the excess skin, repairs the abdominal muscles if they’ve separated and reshapes the remaining tissue into a flatter contour. Liposuction may be added to smooth the transition at the waist. The incision runs low, hip to hip, and is placed to sit under underwear and swimwear.
Every abdominoplasty at Formation is performed under general anesthesia in a Quad A accredited surgical facility. Dr. Grandhige works with the same anesthesia provider and the same staff on every case. His own physician assistant assists on all of his surgeries. Because everyone in the room already knows his methods, the operation runs more efficiently and more safely. Abdominoplasty is one of the three procedures he performs most often, including advanced and revision cases. You’ll find the full procedure detail on Formation’s main page for abdominoplasty in Tampa.
The Formation Tighten-Or-Remove Line for Your Abdomen
The Tighten-Or-Remove Line is how Formation decides whether your abdomen needs skin removed or can be handled with less. It comes down to three checks. Fail any one of them and removal is the honest answer. Clear all three and liposuction with energy-based tightening may be enough.
Check One: Recoil
Pinch a fold of skin below your navel, then let it go. Skin that springs back toward your body still has recoil. Skin that settles slowly or stays creased has lost the elasticity that tightening depends on. Pregnancy, weight changes and age all wear recoil down, and training can’t rebuild it.
Check Two: The Standing Fold
Stand in front of a mirror without holding your stomach in. If skin hangs over your lower abdomen at rest, that overhang has to come off. Fat removal and tightening won’t lift a fold that hangs on its own.
Check Three: The Abdominal Wall
Lie on your back, lift your head slightly and press your fingertips along the midline above and below the navel. A gap, or a ridge that domes outward, points to muscle separation. Core work strengthens the muscles around a separation, but a true gap needs surgical repair.
Two timing factors sit outside the checks. Your weight should be stable, and pregnancies should be behind you, because both stretch a repair back out. If your laxity is limited to a small area below the navel, a mini tummy tuck with a shorter incision may cover it.
How Formation Prepares Your Body Before Surgery
Preparation starts well before surgery day. Dr. Grandhige assesses your health and diet first. Then, in the window just before and after the operation, your nutrition, protein intake, supplements and peptides are adjusted. The goal is to give your body what it needs to heal the repair and build new tissue. Compression planning and recovery logistics get settled ahead of time, too.
Medications get the same attention. Preoperative screening includes a medical history review, recent labs and a risk assessment, and anesthesia is planned for you individually. That matters if you take a GLP-1 weight-loss drug. In 2023 the ASA recommended holding injectable versions for a week before any procedure requiring anesthesia. The October 2024 multisociety guidance changed that. It says most patients can keep taking these drugs before elective surgery, while those at highest risk of stomach side effects follow a 24-hour liquid diet or other measures. The societies call it guidance rather than a formal evidence-based guideline, so your anesthesia plan decides, not a blanket rule. Don’t stop a prescription on your own.
The surgical tools for a tummy tuck are much the same at every practice. The thinking around them isn’t.
The 60/40 Recovery Standard
At Formation, the operation is 60 percent of your result and recovery is the other 40. Poor aftercare can undo a well-performed surgery, so Formation runs the post-operative phase in-house. The lymphatic, nutrition and coaching providers on your team are ones Dr. Grandhige has vetted himself.
In the first week, the work is rest, gentle movement and pain control. A nurse is provided for the first 24 hours, and help at home through the first several days makes a real difference. Through weeks two and three, most patients return to light activity, and many go back to desk work after 10 to 14 days. Compression stays on, and lymphatic treatments become a regular part of the plan. By weeks four to six, swelling keeps easing as lymphatic sessions continue. Unrestricted exercise returns at six to eight weeks. From three to six months, your final shape settles as the last swelling resolves.
You get scheduled visits, clear milestones and a team that answers when you’re unsure whether something is normal. Dr. Grandhige follows patients for a full year, and nearly all of them stay for the full twelve months.
Recovering at Home in Rivercrest
Recovering in Rivercrest means healing in your own bed with follow-up visits a short drive away. Formation’s office at 1315 South Howard Avenue sits a little over four miles south of Rivercrest Park in a straight line. The drive usually takes 15 to 20 minutes outside rush hour. Patients who travel in from out of town recover in nearby hotels, where Dr. Grandhige visits them in their rooms. You skip that and still make every lymphatic session without a long commute.
Walking starts in week one, and Rivercrest Park at 4802 North Boulevard is a practical place to do it. The park opens at 7 AM. Its trail circles the grounds and runs down to the Hillsborough River, with shade trees around the playground. Early on, short and frequent walks matter more than distance, and you’ll walk slightly bent forward for the first stretch while the repair settles.
Two details are worth planning around. If your front door sits up a flight of porch steps, set up a ground-floor recovery spot so those steps happen only a few times a day in week one. And Tampa heat changes the compression math. You’ll wear the garment through the early weeks, so time your walks for the park’s 7 AM opening rather than midafternoon. If your calendar allows it, a cooler-month surgery date makes those weeks easier.
Weight-Loss Medication and Tummy Tuck Timing in 2026
If you lost weight on a GLP-1 medication and your skin didn’t follow, you’re in a large group. According to ASPS’s 2025 procedural data, 82 percent of member surgeons received GLP-1-related consultation requests in 2025, and 88 percent reported tummy tuck consultations linked to those drugs. National tummy tuck volume rose only 2 percent, to 173,251 procedures, which ASPS describes as statistically flat.
Consultations aren’t surgeries, and the gap is telling. ASPS reads it as a pipeline of patients still weighing timing and recovery. Waiting is often the right call. Your weight needs to hold steady before surgery so your skin retracts as far as it will and Dr. Grandhige can judge what actually remains. These figures come from a survey of ASPS Member Surgeons, so they reflect what those practices report, not every GLP-1 user.
When a Tummy Tuck Is the Wrong Choice
Dr. Grandhige will tell you when a tummy tuck won’t help. If your skin clears all three checks and the concern is fat alone, liposuction is the better recommendation. If you’re still losing weight or planning a pregnancy, the right advice is to wait. And when loose skin wraps around the hips and back after major weight loss, an abdominal procedure alone won’t reach it. That calls for a lower body lift, which Dr. Grandhige performs himself. Sometimes surgery isn’t offered at all, and the plan starts with your health instead.
One Patient’s Experience
A mother who had finished having children and held a steady weight came in bothered by loose skin and a midline bulge. Exercise had made her stronger but hadn’t changed her shape. She brought her daughters to the consultation and joked that they should pay for it, since they caused it. She had an abdominoplasty with muscle repair and selective contouring. Afterward she reported a flatter abdomen, better posture and less back discomfort. She used to arrive at appointments in loose sweatpants. Now she shows up dressed to show off the result.
Why Patients Choose Formation
Dr. Gopal Grandhige is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in aesthetic surgery. He earned his MD at the University of Michigan Medical School and matched into Yale’s six-year combined plastic surgery residency. He then changed course to complete a full general surgery residency, followed by fellowship training in burn surgery, critical care and minimally invasive metabolic and foregut surgery. That path shows in how he plans an abdominoplasty, around tissue healing, inflammation and the anatomy of the abdominal wall.
He has performed surgery for more than 15 years, with several thousand procedures over his career. He keeps his surgical volume low on purpose and evaluates every patient himself. When you review tummy tuck results from any surgeon, look for patients whose before photos look like you. That comparison tells you the most about what to expect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Formation’s office at 1315 South Howard Avenue sits a little over four miles south of Rivercrest Park in a straight line. The drive usually takes 15 to 20 minutes outside rush hour, so early follow-ups and lymphatic sessions stay short trips.
Liposuction removes fat. A tummy tuck removes loose skin and repairs separated abdominal muscles. If your skin still has recoil and the problem is fat alone, liposuction is usually the better fit, and many plans combine the two.
Yes. When the abdominal muscles have separated, Dr. Grandhige stitches them back together during the abdominoplasty. Core training can strengthen the muscles around a separation, but it won’t close a true gap.
Often, yes, within limits. When the two are combined in a Florida office surgery setting, state rules cap liposuction at 1,000 cc of fat. Larger contouring plans may be staged, and Dr. Grandhige explains which applies to you at your consultation.
Many patients return to desk work after 10 to 14 days. Unrestricted exercise returns at six to eight weeks, and your final shape settles over three to six months.
Not necessarily. Current multisociety guidance says most patients can keep taking GLP-1 medications before elective surgery, with a 24-hour liquid diet for those at highest risk. Your anesthesia plan decides, so don’t stop any prescription on your own.
The incision runs low, hip to hip, and is placed to sit under underwear and swimwear. Scar placement is planned before surgery begins.
Results can be permanent as long as you avoid major weight changes and future pregnancies. The muscle repair and skin removal create a durable foundation that holds up well over time.

Does fat move after lipo?
It’s a common concern, especially when someone notices weight gain in an area that wasn’t treated.
Here’s what actually happens.
The fat cells removed during liposuction are gone permanently. But if someone gains weight afterward, the remaining fat cells can still grow, including in areas that weren’t treated.
The fat didn’t move. The body gained weight.
That’s why Dr. Gopal emphasizes being at a weight patients can realistically maintain before surgery. Not the lowest weight they can reach, but one they can sustain long after recovery.

Don’t plan lipo 2 months before vacation.
If the goal is to enjoy a more sculpted, defined body next summer, the planning needs to start months before that.
Fall is one of our busiest seasons at Formation, and there’s a reason for it. Many patients are already thinking about how they want to look and feel next summer.
But getting there takes time.
At Formation, Dr. Gopal requires at least four weeks of preparation before surgery. That time is spent preparing patients physically and mentally for the procedure and recovery.
After surgery, swelling needs to go down, the skin needs to contract, and the tissues need time to settle into their new contour.
It can take 6–9 months for results to look and feel natural.
That’s why Dr. Gopal recommends planning liposuction 6–12 months ahead, especially when there’s a specific season or vacation in mind.
If next summer is the goal, now is the time to start the conversation.

How defined would you go?
Not everyone wants the same look from HD liposuction. Some prefer a smooth, subtle contour, while others want their abs to stand out.
Here’s how the three levels of definition differ:
01. Low definition: A leaner, natural-looking abdomen with subtle definition and light contouring around the underlying muscles.
02. Medium definition: More visible separation between the abdominal muscles, with added definition through the abs and obliques without a sharply etched six-pack.
03. High definition: More pronounced sculpting around the abs and obliques to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more chiseled, athletic look.
Dr. Gopal tailors his HD liposuction technique to the level of definition you’re looking for, while considering what’s achievable for your body.
Which would you choose: 1, 2 or 3? Tell us in the comments!

This isn’t traditional lipo. It’s HD lipo.
For this patient, getting smaller isn’t the goal.
He already works out. He already has the muscle. Dr. Gopal’s job is to use HD liposuction to bring out more of that existing definition and shape the areas around it so the body looks more athletic and defined.
That’s why the markings matter. Before surgery even begins, Dr. Gopal is mapping out how the abs, chest, arms and surrounding areas should work together in the final result.

This is the part of the job that never gets old.
There’s something special about knowing how different a patient’s life might feel on the other side.
Not just because their body may look different, but because of everything that can come with it.
Feeling more comfortable in their own skin.
Saying yes to plans without thinking twice.
Looking forward to summer instead of dreading it.
Plastic surgery can change a body. But sometimes, what matters most is how differently someone gets to experience their life afterward.
And that’s a pretty incredible part of what we get to do at Formation Tampa.

Three small incisions instead of one long one.
For some patients with diastasis recti, repairing the separated abdominal muscles doesn’t necessarily require a traditional tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck makes sense when there’s loose skin that needs to be removed at the same time. But some patients are lean, don’t have much loose skin, and still have that persistent pooch from muscle separation.
For the right patient, Dr. Gopal can repair the diastasis using a minimally invasive robotic approach through three small incisions, about 8 mm each, hidden along the bikini line.
The key is choosing the right procedure for the right anatomy. If there’s significant loose skin or excess fat, repairing the muscles alone may actually make that looseness more noticeable.
That’s why the consultation matters. It’s not just about seeing a belly pooch. It’s about understanding what’s causing it and what actually needs to be addressed.

The last one got 11/10.
Some of the biggest factors affecting liposuction results have nothing to do with what happens in the operating room.
Dr. Gopal rates 13 factors that can influence the final result, from working out before surgery and maintaining a stable weight to compression garments, skin elasticity, and lymphatic massage.
A few of his ratings might surprise you.
For example, he rates skin elasticity a 10/10 because even after the fat is removed, the skin still needs to contract and settle over the new contour.
And lymphatic massage? He gives it an 11/10 because of the role it plays in his recovery protocol, helping manage swelling and supporting how the skin settles over the newly sculpted areas.
The takeaway: great liposuction results depend on more than the surgery itself.
Patient preparation, anatomy, recovery, and long-term weight maintenance all play a role.
