What HD Liposuction Does
HD liposuction removes the fat that hides muscle you’ve already built, so the shape underneath shows at rest and in motion. Standard liposuction reduces volume. HD liposuction works around muscle borders, taking fat from some compartments and deliberately leaving it in others so the transitions look earned.
It’s built for people who train, eat well and still can’t see the result. That last stretch of fat is often genetic. Dieting hard enough to lose it breaks down muscle and starts a yo-yo cycle. HD liposuction takes that fat off directly, which in Dr. Gopal Grandhige’s words lets clients “focus on building instead of dieting.”
“I don’t treat liposuction as fat removal. I treat it as sculpture,” says Dr. Grandhige, a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in aesthetic surgery. Each plan starts from your muscle shape, skeletal structure, fat quality and the way light falls across your body. That matters most in men, where small errors can read as artificial or feminized.
Dr. Grandhige performs high definition liposuction on the abdomen, flanks, back, chest, arms and thighs at Formation’s practice on South Howard Avenue. Northdale is an unincorporated community of about 23,000 people in northwest Hillsborough County, roughly 12 miles north of the practice in a straight line.
This is the part of the job that never gets old.
There’s something special about knowing how different a patient’s life might feel on the other side.
Not just because their body may look different, but because of everything that can come with it.
Feeling more comfortable in their own skin.
Saying yes to plans without thinking twice.
Looking forward to summer instead of dreading it.
Plastic surgery can change a body. But sometimes, what matters most is how differently someone gets to experience their life afterward.
And that’s a pretty incredible part of what we get to do at Formation Tampa.

Three small incisions instead of one long one.
For some patients with diastasis recti, repairing the separated abdominal muscles doesn’t necessarily require a traditional tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck makes sense when there’s loose skin that needs to be removed at the same time. But some patients are lean, don’t have much loose skin, and still have that persistent pooch from muscle separation.
For the right patient, Dr. Gopal can repair the diastasis using a minimally invasive robotic approach through three small incisions, about 8 mm each, hidden along the bikini line.
The key is choosing the right procedure for the right anatomy. If there’s significant loose skin or excess fat, repairing the muscles alone may actually make that looseness more noticeable.
That’s why the consultation matters. It’s not just about seeing a belly pooch. It’s about understanding what’s causing it and what actually needs to be addressed.

How defined would you go?
Not everyone wants the same look from HD liposuction. Some prefer a smooth, subtle contour, while others want their abs to stand out.
Here’s how the three levels of definition differ:
01. Low definition: A smoother, more subtle contour with gentle definition around the waist and abdomen.
02. Medium definition: More visible abdominal lines and a defined waist, without the appearance of a pronounced six-pack.
03. High definition: More pronounced abdominal contours that highlight the underlying muscle structure for a sculpted, athletic look.
Dr. Gopal tailors his HD liposuction technique to the level of definition you’re looking for, while considering what’s achievable for your body.
Which would you choose: 1, 2 or 3? Tell us in the comments!

The last one got 11/10.
Some of the biggest factors affecting liposuction results have nothing to do with what happens in the operating room.
Dr. Gopal rates 13 factors that can influence the final result, from working out before surgery and maintaining a stable weight to compression garments, skin elasticity, and lymphatic massage.
A few of his ratings might surprise you.
For example, he rates skin elasticity a 10/10 because even after the fat is removed, the skin still needs to contract and settle over the new contour.
And lymphatic massage? He gives it an 11/10 because of the role it plays in his recovery protocol, helping manage swelling and supporting how the skin settles over the newly sculpted areas.
The takeaway: great liposuction results depend on more than the surgery itself.
Patient preparation, anatomy, recovery, and long-term weight maintenance all play a role.

Six to seven hours.
That’s how long an HD liposuction procedure can take with Dr. Gopal’s approach.
He’s not simply removing fat. He’s evaluating every square inch, considering the underlying anatomy, and shaping how each contour transitions into the next.
It’s detailed, physically demanding work.
So when Dr. Gopal says, “Someone’s gotta sweat for the fat to come off,” he means it.

Will neck lipo give you the jawline you want?
It depends…
Someone can have fullness under the chin and assume the answer is neck liposuction. But what looks like “fat” from the outside can actually come from several different structures.
Some fat sits directly beneath the skin and can respond very well to liposuction.
But fullness can also come from deeper fat beneath the platysma, the salivary glands under the jaw, muscles under the chin, or even the natural projection of the chin and jaw itself.
That distinction can completely change what neck liposuction can realistically accomplish.
This is why evaluating the anatomy matters before deciding on a procedure.
For the right anatomy, neck liposuction can create a significant change in the neck and jawline.
But when deeper structures are contributing to the fullness, liposuction alone may not create the contour someone is expecting.
A good neck lipo consultation should figure that out first.

Want more definition than workouts gave you?
Traditional liposuction focuses primarily on removing fat. HD liposuction goes further. It requires understanding the underlying muscle anatomy, where to remove fat, where to preserve it, and how each contour works together to create natural-looking definition.
That’s the art of it. The goal isn’t to give every patient the same abs or the same body. It’s to work with the anatomy that’s already there and determine how much definition will look right for that individual.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige specializes in high-definition liposuction and advanced body contouring, using nearly two decades of surgical experience to create results that look sculpted, athletic, and intentional.

Defined abs with HD liposuction.
Unlike traditional liposuction, where the primary goal is removing excess fat, HD liposuction is about strategically removing fat to reveal and enhance the underlying muscle structure.
Those markings you see before surgery help Dr. Gopal map out the patient’s anatomy and plan where to remove fat and where to preserve it to create more visible definition.
The second clip was taken immediately after surgery, so this is not the final result. Swelling and bruising will change significantly as the body heals and the final contour develops over the months that follow.

Skin quality changes everything.
Neck liposuction can create a more defined jawline and neck contour by removing unwanted fat, but the result also depends heavily on skin quality and elasticity.
When skin has good elasticity, neck lipo alone may be enough for the skin to contract around the new contour. With some skin laxity, Dr. Gopal may combine liposuction with a skin-tightening treatment such as Renuvion or FaceTite. With significant laxity, a neck lift may be the more appropriate option.
That’s why evaluating the skin is an important part of determining the right approach before neck liposuction.

Who It Fits: The Formation Tighten-Or-Remove Line
The right HD liposuction candidate is at or near goal weight, active, and bothered by missing definition rather than by weight. It’s a finishing tool, not a shortcut. Sometimes the honest answer is to wait or fix something foundational first, and Dr. Grandhige will say so.
Fat is half the question. The other half is whether your skin will settle onto the new shape. Every body consultation at Formation runs through the Formation Tighten-Or-Remove Line, three checks made in the exam room.
Check one is recoil: when the skin is lifted and released, does it return toward the body? Check two is the standing fold: with you standing relaxed, does any skin hang at rest? Check three is the abdominal wall: is there muscle separation, the kind pregnancy or large weight changes leave behind?
Clear all three and HD liposuction can do the work, with energy tightening as a reasonable finisher in some cases. A standing fold or a separated abdominal wall changes the answer, because fat removal can’t take up hanging skin or close a muscle gap. Dr. Grandhige performs abdominoplasty himself, so failing a check changes the plan, not the surgeon.
Preparation And Recovery Under The 60/40 Recovery Standard
Dr. Grandhige attributes roughly 60% of an HD liposuction result to surgery and 40% to the care that follows. Formation calls this the 60/40 Recovery Standard, and it’s why post-op care is run by the practice instead of handed off. Poor post-op care can ruin a well-performed surgery.
Before Surgery
Your health and diet are assessed before treatment. In the window immediately before and after surgery, nutrition, supplements and peptides are adjusted so your body builds the most structure it can while it heals, with protein intake and inflammation control dialed in. You also get clear pre-op instructions, compression planning and help arranging recovery logistics. The cannula is the same instrument at every practice. The thinking around it isn’t, and that thinking is the core of Formation’s philosophy.
The Recovery Timeline
The first 48 to 72 hours bring swelling, soreness and drainage, and you’re encouraged to walk early. During week one you wear compression around the clock and stay off work, though light daily activity is fine. Lymphatic treatment starts at your first post-op visit in Dr. Grandhige’s office, and if a fluid collection called a seroma forms, it’s removed.
Weeks two to four bring steady improvement. Most patients are back in the gym within one to two weeks and train without restriction between weeks two and four, as long as the garment stays on. Definition starts to show between 6 and 12 weeks as inflammation settles. The final contour matures over three to six months, and skin regains normal pliability and sensation between 6 and 12 months. Dr. Grandhige follows HD liposuction patients for a full year, and nearly all of them complete it.
Compression through a Tampa summer is a real scheduling factor. If your workouts happen outdoors, on the course at Northdale Golf & Tennis Club or on neighborhood runs, the garment adds weeks of extra heat, so weigh the season when you choose a date.
Recovering From Northdale
Formation sits at 1315 South Howard Avenue, Suite 102, about 12 miles south of Northdale in a straight line. Dale Mabry Highway runs south from the Northdale Boulevard intersection into South Tampa. The route is simple, but it’s a real ride in a compression garment.
Formation has relationships with hotels near the practice, and Dr. Grandhige visits patients in their hotel rooms so they don’t have to come to the office in those early days. If the drive worries you more than the surgery, ask about it. Back home, Northdale Park and Recreation Center on Hooting Owls Place is close by for the early walks Dr. Grandhige encourages.
How Dr. Grandhige Plans And Performs HD Liposuction
Dr. Grandhige evaluates every patient and designs every surgical plan himself, then performs the surgery with the same team on every case. Formation limits surgical volume so he stays involved before, during and after.
The Surgeon Behind The Plan
Dr. Grandhige graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and matched into Yale’s six-year combined plastic surgery residency before moving to a full general surgery residency. He then completed fellowships in burn surgery, critical care, and minimally invasive metabolic and foregut surgery. He is board certified in general surgery and has operated for more than 15 years across several thousand procedures. That training shows in plans built around how tissue heals and how inflammation behaves. He describes experience as pattern recognition, judgment and restraint: knowing how far to go and when to stop.
Planning Multiple Zones
Many plans cover more than one area, and Florida limits how much fat can be removed in an office setting. The state’s office surgery rule caps liposuction there at 4,000 cc of supernatant fat, the fat that remains once the fluid in the aspirate separates out. When liposuction is combined with abdominoplasty in that setting, the cap is 1,000 cc. Limits like these are one reason a plan spanning abdomen, flanks, back and chest may be staged. Patients who want the whole torso treated together are often planned as Lipo360, Formation’s circumferential torso contouring. You’ll know if your plan is staged before you pick a date.
Surgery Day
HD liposuction is performed under general anesthesia in a Quad A-accredited surgical facility. Dr. Grandhige works with the same anesthesia provider and staff on every case, and his own physician assistant assists on all of his surgeries. Small, strategically placed incisions give access to targeted fat compartments. Fat is removed selectively so muscle borders read cleanly, without the over-etched lines that announce surgery. General anesthesia means someone else drives you home to Northdale.
What The Research Says About HD Liposuction Safety
Serious complications after HD liposuction are rare, and minor, temporary ones are common enough to plan around. The largest pooled look at the procedure, a 2023 systematic review in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, combined 21 studies covering 6,964 patients.
Major complications, mostly infections and hematomas, occurred in 0.2% of cases. Minor complications ran about 14%, led by temporary skin darkening at 3.8%, seroma at 3.3% and temporary tissue firmness at 2.7%. No blood clots in the legs or lungs were reported, and satisfaction was 92.6%. Patients averaged about 38 years old with a BMI near 25, close to the near-goal-weight candidate described above.
The limitation matters. Every included study was a case series, reporting wasn’t uniform, and no standardized patient-reported outcome tool was used. Read the figures as the best available estimate, not a guarantee.
Seroma is the complication Formation’s recovery care targets directly. That’s why lymphatic treatment at Formation starts at the first post-op visit and continues to help prevent fluid collections, and why a seroma that does form is removed.
Results And How Long They Last
Fat cells removed during HD liposuction don’t come back, so results are considered permanent as long as your weight stays stable. Weight gain can still enlarge the fat cells that remain, so the habits that got you here keep mattering.
Expect clearer muscle visibility, sharper contours and an athletic shape that looks natural standing still and moving. Extreme definition isn’t the goal. It tends to look fake, and over-resection leaves irregularities that age poorly.
One patient, a physician who trained hard and ate carefully, never saw his abdominal and flank definition match the effort. Dr. Grandhige treated his abdomen, back, chest, axilla, arms and flanks conservatively. After recovery he looked athletic and proportional at rest and in motion, felt more at ease in fitted clothing and trained with fresh motivation. Nobody guessed he’d had surgery. He later sent Dr. Grandhige a Halloween photo of himself dressed as Superman.
Because the final contour takes three to six months, plan weddings, trips and photo-heavy events around that window. You can see real outcomes in Formation’s before-and-after gallery.
HD Liposuction For Northdale Patients Who Already Did The Work
If you’re near your goal weight and the definition still won’t show, HD liposuction is the finishing step. Dr. Grandhige designs the plan around your anatomy, performs the surgery with the same team every time, and follows you for a year through a recovery Formation runs itself. The 12 miles from Northdale are the smallest part of the decision.
Use the form below to book a complimentary virtual evaluation with Hanna or an in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige, which carries a fee applied toward your procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions About HD Liposuction In Northdale
No. It's a contouring tool for people already at or near their goal weight. HD liposuction refines shape and doesn't replace diet or exercise, so if weight loss is the main goal, Dr. Grandhige will usually recommend addressing that first.
That's the question Dr. Grandhige hears most. His plans are conservative and anatomy-driven, with smooth transitions and no over-etching, so people notice you rather than the surgery. Definition is designed to look right in motion as well as in photos.

Within one to two weeks for most patients, with the compression garment on, and without restriction between weeks two and four. If your plan includes abdominoplasty, expect six to eight weeks.
Definition shows between 6 and 12 weeks, and the final contour matures over three to six months.
Yes, provided your weight stays stable. Removed fat cells don't return, but weight gain can enlarge the ones left behind.
If skin hangs at rest or the abdominal muscles have separated, liposuction alone won't fix it. Dr. Grandhige may recommend abdominoplasty, which he performs himself.
