Pinch the skin below the navel, lift it away from the body, and let go. Skin with recoil left in it travels back toward the wall. Skin without recoil stays where you put it. This check separates the patients who can be treated without an incision from the patients who cannot.
Check Two, The Standing Fold
Stand upright, relaxed, arms down. If skin hangs in a fold at rest, no device and no collagen response will lift it. A fold at rest is surplus tissue, and surplus tissue has to come out.
Check Three, The Abdominal Wall
Lie back and lift your head. If a soft ridge appears down the midline while the muscles either side stay firm, the wall is separated. This is the check that most often converts a liposuction consultation into a surgical one, because no external treatment reaches an internal repair.
Clear all three and skin tightening or targeted fat removal becomes reasonable on its own, which is the conversation behind most Apollo Beach liposuction consultations here. Fail check two or three and excision is the honest answer.
Why Your Surgery Happens In A Surgery Center And Not An Office
Florida limits how much fat can be removed in an office, and the limits surprise most patients. Under the state office surgery rule a physician may remove up to 4,000 cubic centimeters of supernatant fat in an office setting. Where volume still runs high, the Formation Staging Line applies. One operation beats two when the total sits safely inside a single session. Two beat one when forcing it into one means cutting the contouring short.
How Abdominoplasty Technique Has Changed Since 2006
Most tummy tuck pages describe this operation the way it was written up twenty years ago. It has moved. A 2025 member survey of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons repeated questions first asked in 2006. Drain use fell from 98 percent to 82.5 percent. Progressive tension sutures had been adopted by 49.8 percent of respondents. Power assisted liposuction climbed from 14 percent to 50.7 percent, while ultrasound assisted liposuction dropped from 13 percent to 6.4 percent.
Read the limitation with the numbers. That survey drew 256 responses from 1,765 members contacted, a 14.5 percent response rate with a margin of error near 4 percentage points. It reports what a self selected slice of surgeons said, not a census.
Two honest takeaways. Drains remain the majority practice, so a drainless tummy tuck is a technique choice rather than a modern standard. And the published comparison of internal tension sutures against drains rests on a small number of controlled trials, so anyone selling a drain free recovery as settled progress is ahead of the literature.
Preparation And Recovery, Week By Week
Health and diet get assessed before anything is scheduled. Nutrition, supplements and peptides are then adjusted in the window immediately before surgery and again immediately after, so the body has what it needs to build structure while it heals. Protein intake, inflammation control and lymphatic flow are treated as parts of the operation.
A nurse stays with you through the first 24 hours. Compression runs continuously through week one, and lymphatic treatment starts at your first post-operative visit rather than weeks later. Most patients are back at desk work between day 10 and day 14. Light activity resumes across weeks two and three. Swelling settles noticeably between weeks four and six, and unrestricted exercise generally clears between six and eight weeks, later than a liposuction recovery because an internal repair has to hold. That is the 60/40 Recovery Standard. Surgery accounts for roughly 60 percent of the result and post-operative care for the other 40. Aftercare done badly undoes a well executed operation, which is why Formation keeps that phase in house.
The instruments on the table are the same ones sold to every practice in Hillsborough County. The thinking around them is not, and Formation runs a deliberately small surgical volume for that reason.
Recovering In Apollo Beach Specifically
Apollo Beach sits about 12 miles from South Howard Avenue in a straight line and roughly 20 by road, because Hillsborough Bay is in the way. The route runs north on Interstate 75, west on the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, then off toward Willow Avenue. The Florida Department of Transportation finished rebuilding the Interstate 75 interchange at Big Bend Road, Exit 246, in March 2025, so the ramp work that complicated that drive for three years is done. Landscape work at the same interchange continues through fall 2026 and can mean occasional shoulder closures on that mile.
Three things about recovering in 33572 differ from recovering in South Tampa.
Water comes first. Much of Apollo Beach is built around dredged canals with direct bay access, and plenty of homes have a dock out back. Warm brackish and salt water is the wrong place for a healing incision. Submersion waits until the incision is closed and cleared at a follow-up, not until it looks closed from the outside. Showers are fine long before that.
The commute is second. A round trip north to Tampa or Brandon puts you in a car seat for most of an hour, which asks more of a fresh wall repair than walking to a home office does. If your work involves that drive, aim for day 14 rather than day 10.
Heat is third. Compression has to stay on through the settling weeks, and doing that through a Gulf Coast August is a scheduling factor rather than a minor annoyance. Patients who can pick their month usually pick the cooler half of the year.
Patients also come to Formation from Ruskin, Sun City Center, Gibsonton and Riverview, all of which share the same stretch of Interstate 75 north. On surgery day, a night near the office often beats the drive south. Formation holds relationships with nearby hotels, and Dr. Grandhige visits hotel patients in their rooms during the early days so nobody drives 20 miles for a dressing check.
What Changed For One Patient After Abdominoplasty
One patient came to Formation having finished her pregnancies and held a stable weight for years. Exercise had built real strength and done nothing for the shape of her abdomen, because the problem was loose skin and a separated wall.
