Check One, Recoil
Pinch the skin below your navel, lift it away from your body, and let go. Watch what it does. Skin with recoil snaps back toward the abdominal wall. Skin without recoil settles slowly, or stays lifted, or creases where you held it. Poor recoil means energy tightening is not the answer, because there is nothing left for it to tighten against.
Check Two, The Standing Fold
Stand upright in front of a mirror, arms at your sides, and look at your profile. If skin hangs as a distinct fold at rest, not just when you bend forward, that fold has to be cut out. No device removes hanging tissue. This is the check that most often moves someone from a liposuction conversation to a surgical one.
Check Three, The Abdominal Wall
Lie flat, lift your head and shoulders slightly, and press two fingers into the midline above your navel. A soft channel between two firm ridges is muscle separation. If it is there, skin work alone will not flatten you, because the bulge is coming from behind the muscle layer.

Why Temple Terrace Patients Ask Different Questions
Temple Terrace is its own city, not a Tampa neighborhood. It is the third and smallest incorporated municipality in Hillsborough County after Tampa and Plant City, incorporated in 1925, and it is a Tree City USA known for rolling terrain, sand live oaks, and Hillsborough River frontage. Formation sits at 1315 South Howard Avenue, Suite 102, roughly fourteen road miles southwest of Temple Terrace, with the drive running down I-275 through the downtown interchange. Ask any surgeon you consult how they close the space under the skin flap. Practice has shifted here, and the shift is documented. A survey of American Society of Plastic Surgeons members compared current abdominoplasty practice against a 2006 baseline and found drain use fell from 98 percent to 82.5 percent, progressive tension sutures were used by 49.8 percent of respondents, and power-assisted liposuction rose from 14 percent to 50.7 percent while ultrasound-assisted liposuction fell from 13 percent to 6.4 percent. Be careful with how that gets marketed. A 2025 meta-analysis in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found progressive tension suturing outperformed drains on seroma and reoperation rates, with no difference for hematoma or infection, and the authors stated plainly that larger, higher-quality studies are still needed before drainless abdominoplasty can be called settled. Any page selling you a drainless tummy tuck as risk-free is skipping the second half of that finding.
The other question worth asking: who evaluates you before surgery day, and will you meet the operating surgeon before you are on the table. Some models run entirely on a virtual screen with the surgeon introduced the morning of the procedure. Dr. Grandhige evaluates every patient personally and designs the plan himself.
Recovery Week By Week
A nurse stays with you for the first twenty-four hours. Week one is rest, mobility, and pain control, with short walks starting almost immediately.
Weeks two and three bring a gradual return to light activity. Compression stays on. Lymphatic treatment matters most in this window, and most patients are back to desk work between ten and fourteen days.
By weeks four to six swelling is visibly settling and lymphatic work continues. Unrestricted exercise comes back between six and eight weeks, which is the point where the Temple Terrace Family Recreation Complex, a full swing, and heavy lifting all reopen. Final shape continues refining through three to six months as the last of the swelling resolves.
Dr. Grandhige follows patients for a full year. That is not a courtesy. Surgery is sixty percent of the result and aftercare is the other forty percent, and a well-executed operation can still be undone by an unmanaged recovery.
Preparation gets the same treatment. Health and diet are assessed before anything is scheduled, and nutrition, supplements, and peptides are adjusted in the window immediately before and after surgery so the body has what it needs to build structure while it heals. Weight, GLP-1 Medications, And Timing
Timing decides more of your result than technique does.
Formation applies a weight-stability window: ninety days at a weight within about five pounds of your intended long-term weight before surgery is scheduled. Operating on someone still actively losing means removing skin that is still changing, and the outcome will not hold.
This has become the most common scheduling conversation in the practice, and the national data explains why. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recorded 171,064 abdominoplasties in 2024, third among cosmetic surgical procedures, and attributed growth in lifts and tucks to patients completing substantial weight loss, with GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy accelerating the trend. Among GLP-1 patients under the care of ASPS member surgeons, twenty percent had already undergone a procedure and thirty-nine percent were considering surgery. If your loose skin is confined below the navel and your abdominal wall is intact, a mini tummy tuck may be the better fit with a shorter scar and a faster return. That is a decision made from anatomy, not preference.
What A Tummy Tuck Will Not Fix
The scar is permanent. It sits low and horizontal, positioned to hide under swimwear, but it does not disappear and it takes twelve to eighteen months to fade toward its final appearance.
Abdominoplasty does not touch visceral fat, the fat behind the abdominal wall around the organs. If that is the source of your bulge, surgery will not flatten you and you will be told so.
It also does not create definition. Skin removal produces a flat, smooth abdomen. Visible muscle contour is a separate procedure with a separate candidate profile.
Seromas can still form regardless of closure technique, which is why lymphatic treatment starts at the first post-operative visit. Sensation above the incision is usually altered for six to twelve months before it normalizes.
And if you are planning another pregnancy or another significant weight change, wait. Muscle repair does not survive a subsequent pregnancy intact. For patients whose skin excess wraps fully around the torso, Dr. Grandhige performs lower body lift and circumferential contouring himself rather than referring that work elsewhere.
Planning Your Tummy Tuck From Temple Terrace
