Recoil is the single strongest predictor of whether a contouring approach will hold. Pregnancy, significant weight loss, and sun exposure all reduce it. Age matters less than most people expect.
Check Two, The Standing Fold
Stand upright, arms at your sides, and look in a mirror without engaging anything. If skin folds over itself at rest, that fold will still be there after fat is removed. A standing fold moves you toward removal. No fold, with good recoil, often means combining a tummy tuck with liposuction is more surgery than you need.
Check Three, The Abdominal Wall
Lie flat and lift your head and shoulders off the surface. If a ridge rises down the midline, the rectus muscles have separated. This is diastasis recti, and it is a structural problem. Core work does not close it. Neither does liposuction. Muscle repair happens during abdominoplasty and nowhere else in the contouring menu.
Clear all three checks and you are likely a candidate for a less involved procedure. Fail check two or three and skin removal with muscle repair is the honest answer, whatever you were hoping to hear.

Getting To Surgery From Valrico
Valrico sits roughly 20 miles east of Formation’s office at 1315 South Howard Avenue, Suite 102. Most Valrico patients reach South Tampa on State Road 60 or Bloomingdale Avenue, then pick up the Selmon Expressway through Brandon.
That route changed this summer, and it changes how you should schedule. The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority moved the Lee Roy Selmon Reversible Express Lanes to a two-direction model on July 13, 2026, with westbound service toward Tampa now running from 5 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, and eastbound service toward Brandon from noon to 5 a.m. The old midday split is gone. For a Valrico patient, that means an early surgery arrival now has an extra hour of westbound capacity that did not exist before. It also means the drive home after a morning post-op visit lands cleanly in the eastbound window if you leave after noon. Book afternoon follow-ups and the return trip is smoother than the trip in.
This matters more than it sounds. After abdominoplasty you cannot drive yourself, you need an adult with you, and you will be riding in a reclined seat with a compression garment on. A 20-mile drive on the wrong side of the reversible lanes turns a manageable trip into an uncomfortable one. Formation schedules Valrico follow-ups with that in mind.
Patients also travel to Formation from Brandon, Riverview, Lithia, Fish Hawk, and across eastern Hillsborough County. Several arrange a nearby hotel for the first night or two. Formation has relationships with hotels close to the office at discounted rates, and Dr. Grandhige visits patients in their room during those early days so they do not have to make the drive back in.
The Formation Staging Line
The most common question on a tummy tuck consult is what else can be done at the same time. In Florida, part of that answer is written into state rule rather than surgeon preference.
Under Florida Board of Medicine office surgery standards, a maximum of 4,000 cc of supernatant fat may be removed by liposuction in an office setting, and when liposuction is combined with abdominoplasty during a single Level II or Level III office operation, the liposuction may not exceed 1,000 cc of supernatant fat. nih
That cap governs office surgery. It is one of the reasons Formation performs abdominoplasty in Quad A accredited surgical facilities rather than in the office, with the same anesthesia provider and the same surgical team on every case.
The Staging Line sorts patients into three paths:
Path one, single operation. Skin removal, muscle repair, and modest flank contouring performed together. This covers most patients who fail check two or three but carry moderate fat volume.
Path two, single operation with expanded contouring. Abdominoplasty plus circumferential torso work, planned in an accredited facility where volume is set by your anatomy and safety rather than an office ceiling.
Path three, staged. Two operations separated in time. This is the right call when the total surgical load, the fat volume, and your recovery capacity do not fit safely into one anesthetic. Staging is not a failure of planning. It is planning.
The path is assigned at the evaluation, not on surgery day. Dr. Grandhige designs every surgical plan himself and limits how many operations he takes on so that he stays involved through the whole recovery.
Timing Surgery After GLP-1 Weight Loss
A growing share of abdominoplasty candidates arrive after losing weight on a GLP-1 medication. The skin question is the same. The timing question is not.
ASPS reported that more than 800,000 patients under the care of its member surgeons used GLP-1 medications in 2024, and that 39 percent of those patients were considering a surgical procedure. The research is catching up. American Society of Plastic SurgeonsFormation
A 2026 cohort study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal examined abdominoplasty outcomes using national network data. Among 2,253 recent GLP-1 receptor agonist users, GLP-1 use was independently associated with a higher risk of hypertrophic scarring, with a relative risk of 1.79, a finding the authors confirmed in a sensitivity analysis against a different drug class. In patients who had also had bariatric surgery, GLP-1 use was associated with increased wound dehiscence risk.
The published limitation matters as much as the number. This was a retrospective analysis of database records with propensity matching, not a randomized trial. It shows an association, not a cause, and it cannot tell you what will happen to your incision. A separate 2026 analysis found that continuing semaglutide up to the day of surgery raised complication risk in lipoabdominoplasty, and that stopping four weeks beforehand brought outcomes back in line.
Formation applies the Weight-Stability Window: hold your weight within five pounds for 90 days before surgery is scheduled, and disclose every medication including dose and last injection date. Losing weight after abdominoplasty stretches and loosens the result you just paid for in recovery time.
What Recovery Actually Looks Like
Surgery is 60 percent of the result. Active aftercare is the other 40 percent. Dr. Grandhige treats that split as a standard, not a slogan, which is why Formation keeps post-operative care in house instead of sending patients away with a garment and a phone number.
Health and diet are assessed before anything is scheduled. Nutrition, supplements, and peptides are adjusted in the window immediately before and after surgery so the body builds as much structure as it can while it heals. The instrument in the operating room is identical at every practice in Tampa. The thinking around it is not.
The abdominoplasty timeline:
First week. Rest, controlled mobility, and pain management. A nurse is provided for the first 24 hours. Compression is continuous.

Six to eight weeks off is longer than the one to two weeks that follows liposuction alone, and it is the figure people most often try to negotiate. Muscle repair needs that time to hold. Returning at week four because you feel fine is the most common way patients compromise their own result.
Compression through a Hillsborough summer is its own challenge. Inland Valrico runs warmer through the afternoon than the bay side of Tampa. What A Tummy Tuck Will Not Do
It is not a weight loss operation. Candidates should be at or near a stable weight before surgery, not using surgery to get there.
It leaves a scar. The incision runs low across the lower abdomen and it is permanent. Placement, tension, and closure technique determine how it matures, and incision placement is planned around your clothing rather than surgeon convenience. Anyone promising an invisible result is selling something.
It does not survive a future pregnancy intact. Muscle repair can separate again. If you plan to have more children, waiting is the better decision.
It will not fix upper abdominal fullness caused by fat behind the muscle wall. That fat sits deeper than any contouring procedure reaches, and no operation moves it.
Dr. Grandhige tells patients to wait or to skip surgery entirely more often than most people expect from a surgical practice. Sometimes the honest answer is that the abdomen you have is the abdomen a good operation would give you.
