How Much Can Come Out In One Procedure, And When Work Gets Staged
Florida caps office liposuction at 4,000 cc of supernatant fat when it’s the only procedure, dropping to 1,000 cc when it’s combined with something like a tummy tuck. An office removing more than 1,000 cc has to register with the Florida Department of Health and pass inspection, and tumescent lidocaine is capped at 50 mg per kilogram of body weight. As of 2026 the Florida Board of Medicine publishes all of it.
Two words in that rule change how you read every number you hear. The cap is written against supernatant fat, meaning the fat that separates out. What comes through the cannula is fat mixed with tumescent fluid and blood. A canister holding four liters of aspirate did not take four liters of fat off your body. Plenty of clinic pages blur those terms, and patients end up comparing two measurements that aren’t the same thing.
If your goals need more removal than one sitting allows, the work gets staged across two procedures. Dr. Grandhige plans inside these limits on purpose. Over-resection produces irregularities and skin that ages badly, and pushing volume to chase a dramatic single-session result is how people end up unhappy three years later. Liposuction takes out fat. It doesn’t take out skin, and it doesn’t repair muscle. Three checks tell you which side of that line your abdomen sits on.
Check one, recoil. Pinch the skin, pull it away from your body, let go. Does it travel back toward you, or stay roughly where you left it?
Check two, the standing fold. Standing relaxed and upright, does skin hang at rest? A fold that only appears when you sit is a different situation.
Check three, the abdominal wall. Is there separation through the midline? Many people notice a ridge or a doming when they sit up from lying flat.
Clear all three and liposuction alone is a reasonable plan. Fail the second or third and you’re looking at abdominoplasty, which removes the skin and repairs the wall. Dr. Grandhige performs that operation himself, including advanced and revision cases, so it’s a change of plan and not a handoff. What Happens Before Surgery, And What Happens After
Your health and diet get assessed before a date goes on the calendar. In the window immediately before and immediately after surgery, nutrition, supplements and peptides are adjusted so your body builds as much structure as it can while it’s healing.
