FaceTite vs Sofwave isn’t really a fight between two machines. It’s a question about your skin. FaceTite is minimally invasive. A thin cannula goes under the skin, delivers radiofrequency heat, and tightens tissue from both sides at once. Sofwave stays on the surface and sends ultrasound energy into the middle layer of the skin. If you have loose skin plus a pocket of fat under the chin, FaceTite does more. If your skin is only starting to soften and you can’t give up a week to swelling, Sofwave makes more sense.
That’s the short answer. Here’s what the marketing around both of them leaves out.
FaceTite and Sofwave both build collagen with heat, but they reach different depths by different routes. FaceTite is a minimally invasive radiofrequency treatment that works through a small incision, heating fat and skin at the same time. Sofwave is fully non-invasive ultrasound that heats the mid-dermis from outside the body. One reshapes. The other only tightens.
A thin cannula slides under the skin through an incision small enough that it often doesn’t need a stitch. Energy passes between that internal probe and an external electrode resting on the surface. Tissue in between heats up, fat softens and can be drawn out, and the fibrous network under the skin contracts.
Surgeons like it because you can reshape facial contours and tighten in the same pass. That matters under the chin, where fat and loose skin almost always show up together.
Sofwave sends parallel ultrasound beams that drop heat at a fixed depth of roughly 1.5 mm, in the middle layer of the skin. A cooling plate sits against the surface so the top layer stays protected. A session runs 30 to 45 minutes. Nothing breaks the skin.
Because the energy stops at the dermis, fat and nerves below it are left alone. That’s the safety argument, and it’s a fair one. It’s also the ceiling. You can’t tighten what you can’t reach, and you can’t remove fat you never touched. For anyone weighing non-invasive neck treatments, that trade is the entire decision.
How much loose skin do you have, and is there fat sitting under it?
That’s it. Everything else is detail. Mild early laxity, decent elasticity, no fat pocket? Ultrasound is reasonable. Moderate laxity with a soft pad along the jaw? Radiofrequency through a cannula will do more in one visit than three ultrasound sessions will.
Now let me push back on something the industry repeats without questioning. These two get marketed as rivals. They aren’t. They treat patients sitting at different points on the same curve. The real competitor to FaceTite isn’t Sofwave at all. It’s a neck lift. And for a fair number of people hoping to tighten jowls without surgery, the honest answer is that neither device gets them where they want to go.
There’s no head-to-head trial pitting one against the other. What exists is separate evidence for each, plus category-level volume data that says something useful on its own.
Non-surgical skin tightening has gone flat. ASPS procedural statistics put the category at 439,032 procedures in 2024 against 438,211 the year before. Zero percent growth. Compare that with non-invasive fat reduction, which fell from 745,967 to 447,581 across the same stretch, a 40% drop. Neuromodulator injections climbed 4% to 9,883,711. Patients didn’t stop spending. They got pickier about what holds up.
On the radiofrequency side, the largest published series followed 247 patients treated for lower face and neck laxity with internal plus fractional radiofrequency. Ninety-three percent said they were pleased and would do it again. Average age was 55. Nearly all of it, 97.2%, happened under local anesthesia.
Sofwave’s case rests mostly on its clearance record. It’s cleared for facial lines and wrinkles, lifting the eyebrow, lifting lax tissue under the chin and on the neck, acne scars, upper arm laxity, and short-term improvement in the appearance of cellulite. In the upper arm study, 93% of treated arms were graded as improved.
Look at how similar those two 93% figures are, and how little they have in common. One counted reviewer-graded arm laxity. The other counted whether patients would repeat a procedure. Same number, different claim entirely.
Here’s where the two stop being comparable at all.
With Sofwave you get topical numbing or none, mild redness for a few hours, and a normal evening. With FaceTite you get local anesthetic, sometimes an oral sedative, swelling, bruising, compression, and several days you probably don’t want to spend on camera.
That multicenter review of 247 patients reported swelling past six weeks in 4.8% of them, firm areas past twelve weeks in 3.2%, and temporary weakness of the nerve along the jaw in 1.2%. All of it resolved on its own. None of it is nothing.
Anyone telling you a minimally invasive treatment is risk-free is selling. FaceTite involves incisions, heat, and anesthesia. That isn’t surgery. It isn’t a facial either.
Most people underestimate week one and overestimate month three.
The first few days bring swelling, bruising, and a tight feeling under the chin. A compression garment goes on right away and stays on 12 to 24 hours a day. By the end of week one, most of my patients are back at work and back in social settings, garment still on. Between weeks two and four the swelling settles and the fat reduction becomes obvious, though the skin change is still coming.
At three months the tightening shows clearly along the jaw. The final result lands somewhere around six to nine months, once the skin has finished contracting. Anyone hoping to see the whole picture at week three will be let down. That’s why I walk patients through the FaceTite aftercare instructions at the pre-op visit, not on the way out the door.
Sofwave recovery isn’t really a timeline. You might be pink for a couple of hours. Makeup goes back on the same day. Hold off on retinol and other actives for a day, then carry on as normal. The collagen response still takes months either way, so the results curve looks similar even when the recovery doesn’t.
Plenty of people, and this is the section most clinics won’t write.
Skip both if your laxity is advanced. If there’s a real hanging fold, if pinching your neck skin gives you an inch of slack, an energy device buys you a modest change and a bill. You’ll be back for surgery in two years and pay twice. I’d rather say no at the first visit.
Skip both if the laxity arrived fast. GLP-1 weight loss has sent me a lot of patients whose skin lost its scaffolding in nine months. Sometimes a device helps. Often the volume loss is the actual problem, and tightening slack skin over a deflated structure makes a face look thinner, not younger.
Let me correct that framing, because it’s easy to misread. The device didn’t fail. The plan did. Somebody treated skin when the case called for volume, or for neck tightening options that address muscle and fat instead of dermis alone.
Skip both if you smoke and won’t stop. Skip both if you want a finished result by a date three weeks out. Collagen doesn’t work on your calendar. Peak change from either treatment lands somewhere between three and six months.
Both devices are FDA cleared. Almost nobody knows what that phrase means.
Clearance runs through the 510(k) clearance process, where a manufacturer shows its device is substantially equivalent to something already sold. Approval is a heavier standard that demands independent proof of safety and effectiveness. Aesthetic energy devices are almost always cleared, not approved. That doesn’t make them unsafe. It does mean the bar was lower than patients assume.
Read the clearance language closely too. Sofwave’s cellulite indication covers short-term improvement in appearance. The supporting study gave 68 participants two treatments spaced two to four weeks apart, then had blinded reviewers grade photos at three months. That’s real evidence. It’s also not the same sentence as “gets rid of cellulite,” which is how it comes out in ads.
Patients ask about the device. They almost never ask about the person holding it.
Ask how many of these specific cases the provider has performed, not how long the clinic has owned the machine. Ask to see photos of patients who looked like you before treatment, not the three best results on the website. Ask what happens if the outcome underwhelms at six months, because that answer tells you whether you’re buying a procedure or a relationship.
Ask about settings and passes as well. Energy delivery is where operator judgment lives, and a provider who can’t discuss their own protocol is probably running a factory default. That’s the difference between a clean jawline and a firm, lumpy one.
The last question is about your own calendar. Patients who properly prepare for FaceTite, meaning they stop blood thinners on schedule and clear the first two days, have a much easier week one than the person who books Friday for a Monday appointment.
No prices. Not because they’re a secret. A number without your anatomy attached is useless, and the truthful answer to “how much” is “come in and let me look at you.”
No randomized head-to-head trial either, because one doesn’t exist. Anyone declaring a clean winner between these two is reasoning from mechanism and marketing, same as everyone else in the field. Better to say that out loud than pretend otherwise.
At Formation in Tampa, this gets decided with hands on the patient, not from a brochure.
I pinch the skin. I look at where fat sits and where it doesn’t. I test elasticity, and I ask about the last two years of weight change. Skin roughly between ages 25 and 55 responds best to energy-based tightening. Past that, the conversation usually turns surgical, and I’d rather have that conversation early than after you’ve spent a year on treatments.
My training was general surgery, burn surgery, and critical care before I moved into aesthetics, and that shapes how I read tissue. Heat is an injury. Controlled injury builds collagen. Uncontrolled injury builds scar. That’s the whole game with either device, and it’s why the operator matters more than the logo on the machine. It’s also why I run the evaluation myself rather than delegating it, whether the plan ends up being neck and jawline contouring or something more involved.
Surgery is about 60% of a result. What happens afterward is the other 40%. The same holds true with devices.
Choose based on how much skin needs to move.
FaceTite vs Sofwave stops being confusing the second you quit comparing specifications and start measuring laxity. Light laxity with no downtime to spare points to ultrasound. Moderate laxity with fat to reshape, plus a week you can protect, points to radiofrequency through a cannula. Advanced laxity points to neither, and anyone telling you different is guessing with your face.
FaceTite is usually the stronger choice for a double chin because most submental fullness involves fat as well as loose skin. Sofwave heats only the mid-dermis at roughly 1.5 mm and can't remove fat. FaceTite works through a small cannula that softens and draws out fat while tightening the skin above it in the same session.
Both treatments rely on new collagen, so results build over three to six months rather than appearing right away. FaceTite generally holds longer because it changes the fat layer and the fibrous network under the skin, not just the dermis. Neither one stops aging, and both need a stable weight to hold.
Yes. FaceTite requires local anesthetic, and in a published series of 247 patients, 97.2% of procedures were performed under local anesthesia. Sofwave typically uses topical numbing or none at all. The tradeoff is depth. The treatment that reaches further needs more anesthesia.
They can sit in the same treatment plan, though rarely on the same day and rarely on the same area. A more common pattern is FaceTite for the lower face and neck where fat and laxity overlap, with surface-level ultrasound reserved for zones that only need dermal tightening. Combining them without a specific reason adds downtime without adding result.
Sofwave carries less risk because nothing breaks the skin and the energy never reaches fat or nerves. In the 247-patient radiofrequency review, complications included swelling beyond six weeks in 4.8% of patients, firm areas beyond twelve weeks in 3.2%, and temporary jaw nerve weakness in 1.2%, all of which resolved. Lower risk and lower ceiling travel together.
FaceTite is typically a single treatment. Sofwave protocols vary by indication, and its cellulite clearance study used two treatments spaced two to four weeks apart, with results assessed at three months. Each Sofwave session runs 30 to 45 minutes.
Then the honest answer is surgery. If pinching the skin on your neck yields a noticeable fold of slack, an energy device produces a modest change that rarely satisfies. Patients in that position who try a device first usually end up paying for both.
The last one got 11/10.
Some of the biggest factors affecting liposuction results have nothing to do with what happens in the operating room.
Dr. Gopal rates 13 factors that can influence the final result, from working out before surgery and maintaining a stable weight to compression garments, skin elasticity, and lymphatic massage.
A few of his ratings might surprise you.
For example, he rates skin elasticity a 10/10 because even after the fat is removed, the skin still needs to contract and settle over the new contour.
And lymphatic massage? He gives it an 11/10 because of the role it plays in his recovery protocol, helping manage swelling and supporting how the skin settles over the newly sculpted areas.
The takeaway: great liposuction results depend on more than the surgery itself.
Patient preparation, anatomy, recovery, and long-term weight maintenance all play a role.

Six to seven hours.
That’s how long an HD liposuction procedure can take with Dr. Gopal’s approach.
He’s not simply removing fat. He’s evaluating every square inch, considering the underlying anatomy, and shaping how each contour transitions into the next.
It’s detailed, physically demanding work.
So when Dr. Gopal says, “Someone’s gotta sweat for the fat to come off,” he means it.

Will neck lipo give you the jawline you want?
It depends…
Someone can have fullness under the chin and assume the answer is neck liposuction. But what looks like “fat” from the outside can actually come from several different structures.
Some fat sits directly beneath the skin and can respond very well to liposuction.
But fullness can also come from deeper fat beneath the platysma, the salivary glands under the jaw, muscles under the chin, or even the natural projection of the chin and jaw itself.
That distinction can completely change what neck liposuction can realistically accomplish.
This is why evaluating the anatomy matters before deciding on a procedure.
For the right anatomy, neck liposuction can create a significant change in the neck and jawline.
But when deeper structures are contributing to the fullness, liposuction alone may not create the contour someone is expecting.
A good neck lipo consultation should figure that out first.

Want more definition than workouts gave you?
Traditional liposuction focuses primarily on removing fat. HD liposuction goes further. It requires understanding the underlying muscle anatomy, where to remove fat, where to preserve it, and how each contour works together to create natural-looking definition.
That’s the art of it. The goal isn’t to give every patient the same abs or the same body. It’s to work with the anatomy that’s already there and determine how much definition will look right for that individual.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige specializes in high-definition liposuction and advanced body contouring, using nearly two decades of surgical experience to create results that look sculpted, athletic, and intentional.

Defined abs with HD liposuction.
Unlike traditional liposuction, where the primary goal is removing excess fat, HD liposuction is about strategically removing fat to reveal and enhance the underlying muscle structure.
Those markings you see before surgery help Dr. Gopal map out the patient’s anatomy and plan where to remove fat and where to preserve it to create more visible definition.
The second clip was taken immediately after surgery, so this is not the final result. Swelling and bruising will change significantly as the body heals and the final contour develops over the months that follow.

Skin quality changes everything.
Neck liposuction can create a more defined jawline and neck contour by removing unwanted fat, but the result also depends heavily on skin quality and elasticity.
When skin has good elasticity, neck lipo alone may be enough for the skin to contract around the new contour. With some skin laxity, Dr. Gopal may combine liposuction with a skin-tightening treatment such as Renuvion or FaceTite. With significant laxity, a neck lift may be the more appropriate option.
That’s why evaluating the skin is an important part of determining the right approach before neck liposuction.

Liposuction can change more than the body.
I’ve watched patients become more confident, make changes in their careers, show up differently in their relationships, and start making different choices for themselves.
That’s when I know I’ve done my job well.
Because high-definition liposuction isn’t only about creating a leaner, more defined physique. Sometimes the physical transformation becomes the catalyst for changes that reach far beyond the operating room.

Male liposuction requires a different approach.
The contours that create a more feminine shape aren’t necessarily the same ones that create a strong, athletic male physique.
With male high-definition liposuction, Dr. Gopal considers how the chest, abdomen, waist, ribs and back work together—and how the underlying muscle anatomy should guide where definition and shadow are created.
That’s also why the chest matters. A highly defined abdomen and back paired with a rounder, less-defined chest can make the overall result feel out of proportion.
The goal is a cohesive, athletic contour that works with the patient’s natural anatomy.

6 months post high-definition liposuction with moderate definition.
The goal wasn’t just less fat. It was a leaner, more athletic contour with visible definition through the abdomen and torso, without pushing the result to the highest level of definition.
High-definition liposuction strategically sculpts around the underlying anatomy and can be customized based on a patient’s anatomy, muscle structure, and the degree of definition they want to achieve.
For this patient, moderate definition created the balance Dr. Gopal was looking for.
Results vary by patient and depend on individual anatomy, skin quality, and treatment plan.
