Short answer: no. PRP does not create new hair follicles. Based on the human evidence we have today, platelet-rich plasma wakes up the follicles you already own. It feeds shrinking, dormant follicles with growth factors and thickens the hair they make. That’s real. It’s just not the same as growing follicles from nothing. If a provider promises brand-new follicles from a few injections, walk out. At Formation, our regenerative medicine clinic in Tampa, we’d rather you understand PRP than believe a myth.
Platelet-rich plasma is your own blood, spun down so the platelets are concentrated. Platelets carry growth factors, the proteins that tell cells to repair and rebuild. Concentrate them, inject them into the scalp, and you deliver a big dose of those signals right where follicles are struggling.
The prep is simple. We draw a small vial of blood, spin it, and pull off the platelet-rich layer. No donor tissue, no synthetic drug, nothing your body doesn’t already make. How the sample is spun changes what you get, which is the real difference between PRP and PRF.
A PRP injection places those growth factors into the thin layer of scalp where follicles sit. The signals do the talking. The sequence:
PRP isn’t right for everyone. Timing and health history matter, and some people, like those considering PRP during pregnancy, should hold off.
PRP delivers a concentrated dose of your own growth factors to the follicle, where they stretch out the phase when hair actively grows.

The exact mechanism still isn’t clear. PRP holds at least six growth factors, and no one can say for sure which ones do the heavy lifting.
No. PRP reactivates existing follicles. It doesn’t build new ones. Growing brand-new follicles is called neogenesis, and in humans we have no solid proof PRP does that. We do have proof of reactivation.
In a 2015 placebo-controlled trial, researchers injected PRP into half of each man’s scalp and a placebo into the other half. The PRP side grew more hair, showed more active cells at the follicle base, and even a few more tiny blood vessels around the roots. That’s a follicle coming back to life, not a new one appearing.
I used to call this “regrowing hair.” That’s not quite right. PRP rescues follicles on their way out, before they quit for good. Once a follicle is dead, PRP can’t raise it.
The industry loves the phrase “stimulates new growth.” Most people hear “new follicles.” Those aren’t the same thing, and that gap is where let-down patients come from.
PRP helps the follicle in three ways. None of them involve making new follicles.
Miniaturized follicles haven’t vanished. They’ve shrunk and gone quiet. Growth factors like IGF-1 nudge them back into an active growth phase, so they push out thicker hair again.
The same signals grow tiny blood vessels around each follicle. More blood means more oxygen and nutrients reaching the root.
Low-grade inflammation around the follicle speeds up thinning. PRP cools that down and buys the follicle time.
Hallmarks of aging addressed: stem cell exhaustion (waking dormant follicle stem cells), altered intercellular communication (restoring growth-factor signaling), and chronic inflammation (cooling the scalp around the root). Those same repair pathways are why PRP fits into the broader anti-aging work we do.
PRP is low-risk because it’s your own blood, so there’s nothing foreign to react to. Expect some soreness, mild swelling, and redness for a day or two, plus a little early shedding before regrowth. Bleeding or infection at the site is rare. Give the scalp a day before getting back to exercise.
One safety point separates real clinics from the rest. Formation uses only human-grade compounds. Research-grade molecules aren’t just lower quality. They’re illegal to administer, prescribe, buy, or dispense, and we don’t touch them. If a place dangles cheap exosomes with dramatic regrowth promises, leave. The FDA has warned patients that unapproved regenerative products can cause infections and worse. So, does PRP create new hair follicles? No, and any honest provider tells you the same. What it can do is save the follicles you still have, if you start early and back the treatment with real lifestyle work. Most plans start with three sessions spaced about a month apart, then move to maintenance every several months. The exact schedule depends on how advanced your thinning is and how your follicles respond.
Yes. A 2024 review of 21 randomized trials with 628 women found PRP increased hair thickness and reduced shedding. Results tend to be stronger in early-to-moderate thinning than in advanced loss.
Usually several months up to a year per session, then results fade as the underlying loss continues. In the 2015 trial, 4 of 20 men were shedding again within about a year and needed retreatment, which is why maintenance matters.
The devices used to prepare PRP are FDA-cleared, but using PRP for hair loss is off-label. The FDA has also warned patients about unapproved regenerative products, such as some exosome treatments, marketed with inflated regrowth claims.
