One session usually starts with a small draw, somewhere between 10 and 60 mL. That is less than a quarter cup, taken from your arm the same way a routine lab test works. The blood spins in a centrifuge, the platelet-rich layer gets pulled off, and what is left is a few milliliters of concentrate for your scalp.
Here is the part most articles skip. The volume that leaves your arm is not the number that decides your result. Platelet count is.
PRP for hair is made from your own blood. A provider draws roughly 10 to 60 mL, spins it in a centrifuge, and separates a platelet-rich layer of about 3 to 10 mL. That concentrate goes back into your scalp to wake up follicles. Higher-quality draws pack more platelets into every milliliter, which is what moves the needle.
A 20 mL draw is common. In real-world data on 212 patients, that volume yielded around 4 mL of PRP holding close to 4 billion platelets (De Matthaeis, 2024). Bigger draws give a provider more room to hit a stronger dose. That matters more than you would think, and it is where a lot of treatments quietly fail.
Plan on a draw between 10 and 60 mL for a single scalp session. Most clinics land in the 20 to 60 mL range, because that gives enough concentrate to cover a thinning crown or hairline with a real platelet dose.
After the draw, your blood goes into a centrifuge. The spin sorts everything into layers by weight, and the platelet-rich band gets collected while red cells and platelet-poor plasma get set aside. A 60 mL draw can produce around 6 mL of PRP at a 5 to 7 times platelet concentration. A 20 mL draw gives you less to work with.
So why not always draw the max? Because more is not automatically better. Too little, and you are injecting weak plasma. Push the concentration too high, and platelets can behave in ways you do not want. The target is a real dose, not the biggest tube on the tray.
That framing is off, though. “How much blood” is the wrong lead. The sharper question is how many platelets, and how they were spun. A clinic that draws 20 mL and runs a proper double-spin can beat a clinic that draws 60 mL and does one lazy spin. In a randomized trial on androgenetic alopecia, double-spin PRP produced a higher platelet count and tracked with better scalp results than single-spin. If you are also comparing PRP and PRF, the prep differs there too, which changes what ends up in the vial.
Microneedling with PRP pairs two triggers, tiny channels in the scalp and a platelet concentrate poured over them. It is the gentler of the two delivery routes, and it needs the smallest blood draw of the pair.
Not much. A microneedling session often uses just 2 to 4 teaspoons of blood, up to about 15 mL, spun down to roughly 4 mL of PRP. That is plenty to spread across a scalp after the needling pass.
A pen or roller creates shallow channels in the scalp, usually with needles between 0.2 and 0.5 mm. Those depths are short enough to skip real pain but long enough to switch on your body’s repair response. PRP goes on right after, and the fresh channels let it sink in instead of sitting on the surface. Some devices apply the PRP during the pass. Most apply it after.
The needling alone nudges collagen and wakes up the scalp. The PRP adds a dose of growth factors on top. Run them together and each one covers a gap the other leaves. You get a repair signal plus the raw material to act on it. For thin, early-stage shedding, that pairing often does more than either move alone.
Injections put PRP under the skin, straight to the level where follicles live. It is the more direct route, and for many patterns of loss it is the one we reach for first. Because a syringe places the concentrate exactly, injections tend to need a fuller draw than microneedling.
Usually, yes. Injection protocols want at least 6 mL of PRP on hand, and providers space deposits across the scalp, often around 0.05 to 0.1 mL per square centimeter, across dozens of spots. To end up with 6 mL of usable concentrate, a 60 mL draw is common. Depending on how much scalp needs coverage, you may need less than that.
At Formation, Jeff Atlas, PA-C handles the injections. He came to us from orthopaedics, where placing precise injections into tissue was the daily job, and that hand transfers straight to the scalp. The PRP goes into the thinning zones in a grid, so the growth factors reach the follicles that stalled rather than pooling in one spot.
Microneedling drives PRP down through channels. Injections skip the channels and drop it at the follicle. That deeper placement reaches the cells that drive stronger, thicker regrowth, which is why injections are the workhorse for pattern loss on the crown and hairline.
For the right candidate, yes, with limits. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, PRP made from a small blood volume and injected on one half of the scalp grew more hair than the untreated half, across three sessions spaced 30 days apart. The wider body of research reaches the same careful verdict: helpful for many, not a cure for anyone.
Put numbers on it. Roughly 70 to 85 percent of suitable patients report visible improvement, with density gains often landing in the 25 to 40 percent range. That is meaningful. It is also not permanent.
Here is the real limit. One session will not fix your hair. The results people quote came from a series, and that same trial saw loss creep back 12 to 16 months after the last treatment in some patients, who then needed re-treatment. PRP is maintenance, not a one-time repair, and staying consistent with your sessions is how you keep the new growth. Anyone selling it as one-and-done is selling you short.
Hallmarks of aging addressed: stem cell exhaustion, by waking dormant follicle stem cells; altered intercellular communication, through growth-factor signaling between cells; and mitochondrial support at the follicle, where energy for growth is made.
PRP works by dropping a concentrated dose of your own platelets where growth has stalled. Those platelets release growth factors that tell nearby cells to repair and divide. A few things follow from that.
Blood supply. PRP nudges new small vessels around follicles, so oxygen and nutrients reach the root more easily. Healthier scalp bed. Better repair signaling means a stronger foundation for the hair you still have. Stalled follicles restart. Pattern loss pushes follicles out of their growth phase early, and PRP can move some back into a growth cycle so they produce hair again.
None of this happens in a vacuum, which brings up the question patients ask most.
Yes, and you usually should. PRP rarely does its best work solo. It sits alongside a hair transplant, topical and oral hair medications, and low-level light therapy, and it tends to lift the results of each. Grafts placed during a transplant can heal into a scalp already primed with growth factors.
There is a reason we push several pathways instead of one. The body compensates. Push a single lever and it routes around you through another pathway, and the result comes out weaker. Go after hair from several angles at once, and you close those escape routes.
This is also where lifestyle earns its keep. Peptides, exosomes, and stem cells fine-tune the work, a repair peptide like BPC-157 being one example. They do not do the work. Your habits do. Protein at every meal gives follicles the amino acids to build hair. Sleep and lower stress calm the shedding signals. Dropping cigarettes protects the small vessels PRP is trying to build.
As a regenerative medicine clinic, Formation works only with human-grade compounds. Research-grade molecules are not safe, and administering, prescribing, buying, or dispensing them is illegal, so we do not touch them.
No. This is the one spot where I will be blunt. At-home PRP kits exist, and yes, you can technically draw blood, freeze the extra, and roll a needle over your scalp in your bathroom. Please do not.
Frozen PRP is a downgrade. Freezing shreds the platelet count and the growth factors, so the vial you thaw in week six is a shadow of the fresh draw. You would be needling weak plasma into a non-sterile scalp with a device you cleaned yourself. The infection risk alone is not worth it.
PRP is a blood product. It belongs in a clinical room with a real centrifuge, sterile tools, and someone who has done this hundreds of times. Save the DIY energy for your gym schedule.
Book a consultation first. Before any needle, a provider confirms your hair loss is the kind PRP helps, because it does not work on every cause of shedding.
Formation is a regenerative medicine clinic in Tampa, and Dr. Gopal Grandhige spearheads the practice. Dr. Grandhige is a board-certified general surgeon who focuses on aesthetic surgery. The PRP injections themselves are done by Jeff Atlas, PA-C, whose orthopaedic background makes precise placement second nature.
We hold SSRP and ISSCA certification, the bodies that certify peptides, exosomes, and stem cell work, so the regenerative side of your plan is held to standard. After treatment, a few simple rules protect your result, like easing back into hard workouts before you go full effort. Consistency with your sessions does the rest.
For most healthy adults, PRP is one of the safer scalp treatments available. It is autologous, meaning it comes from your own body, so there is no donor product and little allergy risk. Side effects are usually mild, some tenderness, a little swelling, and short-term shedding before regrowth. Serious problems are rare across the published reviews.
PRP fits early-to-moderate thinning best. Think a widening part, a softening crown, or a hairline in the early stages of androgenetic alopecia, the most common and best-studied cause of loss in both men and women. It also pairs well with a planned hair transplant, priming the scalp so grafts settle in. If your follicles are long gone, PRP has little to wake up, and a transplant is the more realistic conversation.
PRP is not for everyone. Hold off if you take blood thinners, which change how platelets clot. Hold off if you have a blood or platelet disorder that affects clotting or healing. Heavy smoking works against the vessel growth PRP depends on, which cancels out the point. Timing counts too, so anyone who is pregnant should hold off until after, since this is an elective treatment. And an active scalp or skin infection needs to clear first, then you schedule.
The through-line for all of it is simple. How much blood is needed for PRP hair is the wrong thing to fixate on. The draw is small and quick. What decides your result is the platelet dose in the vial, the hands placing it, and the lifestyle you build around it. Get those right, in a real clinic, and PRP earns its place in your plan.
A single PRP hair session uses a blood draw of about 10 to 60 mL, roughly a quarter cup or less. That spins down to around 3 to 10 mL of platelet-rich concentrate. Microneedling needs the least, often near 15 mL, while injections usually call for the fuller draw.
Not by itself. What counts is the platelet dose in the final vial, not the raw volume. A 20 mL draw with a proper double-spin can outperform a sloppy 60 mL draw. A 60 mL draw can yield about 6 mL of PRP at 5 to 7 times concentration, which gives a provider room for a stronger dose.
Plan on a series, not a single visit. Most protocols run three initial sessions about a month apart, then maintenance every few months. In the trial data, hair loss started returning 12 to 16 months after the last session in some patients without upkeep.
The devices used to prepare PRP are FDA-cleared, but using PRP for hair loss is off-label. That does not make it unsafe, since PRP comes from your own blood, but it does mean results vary and careful providers set realistic expectations.
Microneedling needs the smallest draw. A session often uses just 2 to 4 teaspoons of blood, up to about 15 mL, spun into roughly 4 mL of PRP. That is enough to cover the scalp after the needling pass.
For the right candidate, usually. About 70 to 85 percent of suitable patients report visible improvement, with density gains often in the 25 to 40 percent range. It works best on early-to-moderate thinning and does little once follicles are long gone.
It is not a good idea. At-home kits rely on frozen PRP, which loses much of its platelet count and growth factors, and home microneedling raises real infection risk. PRP is a blood product that belongs in a clinical setting.
