The main benefits of PRP for hair come down to two things: less shedding and thicker-looking coverage for people who still have working follicles. That’s the honest version. PRP won’t sprout new hair on a smooth bald scalp, and anyone promising that is overselling it.
I’ve watched people expect a few injections to do the work of a transplant. That gap between hope and reality is where the letdowns start.
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, uses a small amount of your own blood to help thinning hair. A provider spins the blood in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, then injects that platelet-rich layer into the scalp. The platelets carry growth factors that signal tired follicles to grow healthier hair.
It sits under the regenerative medicine umbrella, next to peptides, exosomes, and stem cells, which all nudge your body’s own repair signals. Clinical trials from 2025 back PRP for cutting shedding and adding density.
People often ask how PRP and PRF compare, since both come from your blood. PRF just releases its growth factors slower and skips additives. Both chase the same result.

This is the part clinics love to skip. PRP helps follicles that are still alive but struggling; it does nothing for skin that has gone fully bald. Hair-restoration specialists estimate that only 30 to 50 percent of patients see a real benefit, and the strongest responders catch their thinning early. Six months in, you’re a far better candidate than someone ten years in.
It’s non-surgical, so no stitches and no recovery week. A session takes about 30 to 60 minutes, and you can drive yourself home and go back to work the same day. Next to a hair transplant, the difference in disruption is night and day.
The marketing skips one detail. A 2025 review of 43 clinical trials found PRP reliably raised hair density and cut shedding, with strong patient satisfaction, but no meaningful gain in the thickness of individual strands. PRP gives you more visible hairs, not coarser ones. Know that going in and you won’t feel cheated.
You bounce back in a day or two, but this is not one-and-done. Results fade if you stop. Most protocols run three monthly sessions up front, then a booster every six months to keep your results. Skip the boosters and you slowly lose the ground you gained.
PRP works best as one piece of a bigger plan. Paired with proven medications like minoxidil and finasteride, plus resistance training, enough protein, real sleep, and lower stress, it does more than it can alone. That’s the idea behind regenerative medicine: peptides, exosomes, PRP, and similar tools fine-tune the work your body already does. Your lifestyle does the actual work. Push one pathway and the body compensates through another, so a multi-angle approach beats a single fix.
Sourcing matters too. The FDA has flagged unapproved stem cell and exosome products for real safety problems. Afterward, skip anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen and aspirin for up to two weeks, since they can blunt the effect. Shampoo gently the next morning, and hold off before you get back to hard workouts for a couple of days.
Results take patience. Less shedding can show within one to two months, but real density changes take three to six months. It’s a slow build, not an overnight switch.
PRP is right for you if you’re catching your thinning early, want a non-surgical option, and will keep up with maintenance. It’s a poor fit if you expect a cure or won’t commit past the first few sessions, and some situations call for waiting, such as if you’re pregnant.
The best question for a provider isn’t “how much.” It’s “what’s your platelet concentration protocol, and can I see before-and-after photos from cases like mine?” A cheap session with weak, poorly prepared plasma is money wasted. Prep quality drives results more than almost anything else.

Not long. PRP results fade over roughly six to twelve months if you stop the sessions. Most people hold their results with a booster about every six months. Skip maintenance and you slowly lose the hair the treatment helped you keep.
PRP only helps follicles that are still alive, so it works on thinning areas, not fully bald patches. Once a spot has gone smooth and shiny, the follicles are usually gone, and injections can't bring them back. For those areas, a transplant is the realistic option.
Studies tend to favor pairing PRP with microneedling. The tiny channels help the growth factors reach the follicles, and combination protocols often show stronger density results than PRP alone. Many providers do both in the same visit.
PRP and a transplant do different jobs. PRP is non-surgical, has almost no downtime, and thickens hair you still have, but it can't fill a bald area. A transplant moves real follicles into bald zones for lasting coverage, at the cost of surgery and recovery. Many people use PRP to protect the hair around a transplant.
Give it time. Reduced shedding can show up within one to two months, but visible density changes usually take three to six months. A recent review of 43 clinical trials confirmed density gains, though results build gradually rather than overnight.
