PRP hair therapy uses your own blood platelets, spun down and injected into the scalp, to wake up sluggish hair follicles and push them back into growing thicker strands. That’s it. No surgery, no foreign substance, no daily pill. It’s why you keep seeing it pop up in celebrity hair routines, and why our phone at Formation in Tampa hasn’t stopped ringing since the start of the year.
Here’s the part most articles skip: PRP isn’t magic. It works beautifully for early thinning. For someone who’s been bald on top for ten years, it won’t do much. I’ll get into that.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) hair therapy is an in-office treatment where a small blood draw gets spun in a centrifuge to separate out platelets, then injected back into thinning areas of the scalp. The platelets release growth factors that signal hair follicles to spend more time in their growing phase. Patients typically do 3 to 4 sessions about a month apart, with visible thickness changes showing up around month three to six.
That paragraph above? Save it. If you remember nothing else, that’s what PRP is.
Because it shows up in photos without showing up in tabloids. PRP doesn’t leave a scar, doesn’t change the hairline, and doesn’t require a hat for three weeks. Public figures can get treated on a Tuesday and walk a red carpet that weekend. Kourtney Kardashian has talked openly about using PRP for her own thinning, and the trend cascaded from there.
There’s also a quieter reason. Hair transplants leave a paper trail. Anyone with a long lens and a zoom can spot a transplanted hairline. PRP doesn’t restructure anything, it just thickens what’s already there. For someone whose face pays the bills, that matters.
The shift toward minimally invasive treatments is happening across the board. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s 2024 Annual Trends Survey found that 57% of members forecast regenerative medicine, including PRP and exosomes, as a major innovation area heading into the next few years.
Most adult hair thinning traces back to androgenetic alopecia, the genetic kind that runs in families. It’s the most common cause in both men and women, full stop. Other factors stack on top: thyroid issues, postpartum hormone swings, iron deficiency, chronic stress, and sometimes plain old bad styling habits like tight ponytails worn daily for years.
I’ve seen patients walk in convinced they have a rare condition when their bloodwork comes back showing low ferritin and low vitamin D. Fix those, add what PRP actually does for hair loss, and the results stack.
Yes. We don’t need to soften this. Hair is one of the first things people notice, and when it starts to disappear, the mirror becomes a daily reminder that something is shifting that you didn’t choose. Patients describe avoiding photos, skipping events, second-guessing professional opportunities. The psychology behind choosing a hair restoration treatment often has more to do with reclaiming a sense of control than with vanity.
PRP works by delivering a concentrated dose of growth factors directly to dormant or struggling hair follicles. The main players are platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). These proteins extend the anagen phase, the active growing stage of each strand, and shorten the resting phase where shedding happens.
A 2025 meta-analysis on PRP for alopecia found mean density increases of around 25 hairs per square centimeter in patients treated for androgenetic alopecia. That’s a real, measurable change.
One thing worth correcting in how this gets explained online: PRP doesn’t create new follicles. It can’t. What it does is rescue follicles that are still there but producing thinner, shorter hair. That’s why early intervention beats waiting.
At our Tampa clinic, the visit runs about 60 to 90 minutes start to finish. Here’s how a typical session goes:
Patients are often surprised the actual injection portion takes maybe 15 to 20 minutes. The rest is prep and recovery.
Light tenderness for a day or two, sometimes mild swelling. Skip workouts and saunas for 24 hours, hold off on hair products for the same window, and avoid blood thinners like ibuprofen for a few days before and after. That’s the whole protocol. Most patients head straight back to work after their appointment.
You can find a fuller breakdown of post-treatment dietary recommendations if you want to optimize results.
This is where I want to be careful, because the marketing around PRP runs hot. Here’s the honest picture:
For early to moderate androgenetic alopecia, success rates land between 70% and 80%, with patient satisfaction around 7.3 out of 10 in published studies. RealSelf currently shows a 93% “Worth It” rating from patients who completed the treatment. Density gains of 25 to 40% are common when the treatment is done right.
What “done right” means: high platelet concentration (most kits aim for 5x baseline or higher), proper injection depth, and the right candidate. A patient with patchy scarring alopecia or fully bald crown won’t see those numbers.
For more on how PRP stacks against minoxidil and finasteride, the short version is this: it works alongside them better than against them.
PRP isn’t for everyone, and a clinic that tells you otherwise is selling something. You shouldn’t get PRP if you have:
We get a lot of questions from patients asking about PRP during pregnancy, and the short answer is we hold off until after.
We also turn away patients with end-stage hair loss. If the follicles are gone, PRP has nothing to work with. Those patients are better served by a transplant consultation, sometimes with PRP added afterward to support graft survival.
Dr. Grandhige, our board-certified general surgeon and the clinic’s owner, personally reviews candidate screening before any regenerative protocol begins.
In some clinics, absolutely. Here’s my honest take after seeing hundreds of consults: PRP gets oversold as a standalone cure, when it’s really a maintenance therapy. The patients who do best treat it like dental cleanings. Initial series, then a touch-up every 6 to 12 months. The patients who get disappointed are the ones who expected one session to fix a decade of thinning.
The other thing nobody mentions: PRP quality varies wildly between clinics. A med spa using a budget kit with weak platelet concentration will give you weaker results than a clinic running a medical-grade system. Ask what platelet count they’re producing. If they can’t answer, walk out.
This is part of why Formation maintains both ISSCA certification and SSRP certification, which credential clinics specifically for peptides, exosomes, and stem cell protocols. Those aren’t decorative. They mean the lab handling and protocols meet a defined standard.
Initial visible improvement shows up around month 3, peaks around month 6, and starts to gradually fade between 12 and 18 months without maintenance sessions. Most patients schedule one or two booster sessions per year after completing the initial 3-to-4-session series. Without maintenance, gains slowly walk back as the follicles return to their baseline behavior. Pair PRP with minoxidil or oral therapy and the durability stretches.
You can read more about the full timeline of PRP hair results if you want the deeper version.
Three things, in this order:
I’ve watched patients waste serious money on a series of injections from poorly-trained providers, then come to us frustrated and out three to six months of progress. Don’t pick the cheapest option. The cheapest option in PRP is usually cheap for a reason.
PRP hair therapy isn’t replacing transplants, and it isn’t replacing oral medications either. It fills a specific gap: a non-surgical option for patients with thinning that’s still salvageable. The U.S. PRP and stem cell alopecia treatment market hit $255 million in 2024 with projected growth of 9.46% annually, per industry data. The growth is real because the need is real.
For Tampa patients deciding between options, the right question isn’t “PRP or transplant?” It’s “which combination of treatments matches my stage of hair loss and my timeline?” That’s the conversation we have at consult. Formation is a regenerative medicine clinic in Tampa, and PRP hair therapy is one tool among several we use to address thinning, alongside peptide protocols and other regenerative work supervised by Dr. Grandhige.
If you’ve been watching your part widen or your hairline soften and you’re tired of products that don’t move the needle, this is a treatment worth a conversation. PRP hair therapy works best when you start before things get severe, not after.
Many use both. Public figures often layer PRP on top of a hair transplant to support graft survival and thickness, and others use PRP alone for maintenance before any surgical step is needed. Industry coverage of celebrity hair routines increasingly shows PRP as part of a stacked approach rather than a standalone fix.
Most patients do an initial series of 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, then 1 to 2 maintenance sessions per year. Patients with more advanced thinning sometimes benefit from a 5th initial session. The 2025 meta-analyses on PRP for alopecia consistently support this protocol.
It's mild. With topical numbing and the ring-block technique, most patients rate the discomfort a 2 or 3 out of 10. The blood draw is the part most people notice. The scalp injections feel like small pressure points rather than sharp pain, and the whole injection portion wraps up in 15 to 20 minutes.
No, and any clinic claiming otherwise is misleading you. PRP needs living follicles to stimulate. Once an area has been bald for years, those follicles are typically gone, and the right treatment shifts to transplant surgery. PRP works for thinning, not for fully bare scalp.
The centrifuge devices used to prepare PRP have FDA 510(k) clearance, but PRP itself is considered an off-label use for hair restoration. That's different from full FDA approval. It's safe when performed by qualified providers using cleared devices, which is the ISHRS position. Don't let marketing language blur the distinction.
Both see benefits, with slightly different patterns. Men with early androgenetic alopecia often show stronger density gains in studies, while women typically report bigger improvements in overall thickness and coverage. The 2024 and 2025 published data supports good outcomes in both groups, with around 70% to 80% experiencing meaningful improvement.
PRP uses anticoagulants and produces a liquid plasma. PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is spun without anticoagulant, creating a gel-like matrix that releases growth factors more slowly. Some clinics now use PRF or hybrid protocols. Current evidence shows similar or slightly better results with PRF, though comparative data is still emerging.

The power of a profile transformation. 🔥
For this patient, we combined PDO Lifting Threads and advanced chin/jawline filler to completely redefine his lower face. By strategically lifting the mid-to-lower face and sculpting the jaw, we didn’t just enhance one feature—we elevated his entire facial appearance.
An incredible, natural-looking result that brings balance and confidence from every angle.
Note: Minor bunching or puckering is completely normal immediately following a PDO thread lift. The slight bunching visible in the after photo will fully subside on its own over the next 2-4 weeks as the threads settle.
