Choosing between exosomes vs. PRP comes down to one question. Do you want a treatment built from your own blood, or a lab-sourced signal that tells your cells how to repair? PRP has been around longer and has more research behind it. Exosomes are newer, far more concentrated, and still not FDA-approved. For most people in Tampa starting out, PRP is the smart first move. For stubborn or age-related concerns, exosomes can pull ahead. The right pick depends on your goal, your age, and who’s holding the syringe. I’ll walk you through both so you can decide with your eyes open.
Exosomes and PRP are both regenerative treatments that use repair signals to improve skin, hair, and healing. PRP concentrates platelets and growth factors from your own blood. Exosomes are tiny, stem-cell-derived messengers that carry instructions between cells. PRP is autologous and used as a blood product. Exosomes carry more signaling power but have no FDA approval.
Exosomes are tiny sacs your cells release to talk to each other. Think of them as text messages between cells, packed with proteins, growth factors, and bits of genetic code.
Most exosomes used in treatment come from mesenchymal stem cells. They carry the instructions that tell skin and hair cells to rebuild, calm down, and repair. Because they’re so small, they slip into tissue easily. And because they come from young, screened donor cells, their quality doesn’t drop with your age the way PRP can.
That last point matters more than the brochures admit.
Hallmarks of aging they target: altered intercellular communication (they restore cell-to-cell signaling), stem cell exhaustion (they nudge tired repair cells back to work), and chronic inflammation (they help quiet the low-grade inflammation that ages tissue).
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is made from your own blood. We draw a small vial, spin it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, then inject that platelet-rich layer where you need repair.
Platelets are loaded with growth factors. Put a high dose right where tissue is healing, hair is thinning, or skin is aging, and you hand the body a stronger repair signal than it would muster on its own. No donor cells, no foreign material. It’s all you.
One trade-off worth saying out loud. PRP is only as good as your blood. A healthy 35-year-old gets a richer platelet pull than someone in their 60s, or someone who smokes.
Hallmarks of aging it targets: altered intercellular communication (growth factors restart local repair signaling) and chronic inflammation (well-prepared PRP can shift tissue toward healing).
The core difference is simple. PRP gives your cells a strong dose of growth factors from your own body. Exosomes give them a more concentrated, more varied set of signals from young stem cells.
Research backs PRP more heavily. A 2025 scoping review of regenerative hair treatments found PRP is the most studied of the bunch, while exosome evidence is still early and mostly preclinical.
So why does anyone reach for exosomes? Potency and consistency.
Exosomes carry far more signaling molecules per dose, by some estimates many times what PRP delivers. They don’t lean on your age or health, since they come from screened donor cells. Many people need only one or two sessions instead of the three to six a PRP series often takes. For chronic concerns like older skin or long-standing thinning, that extra signal can do more.
PRP is autologous, so there’s no risk of rejection and no foreign-source contamination. It’s backed by years of clinical use in skin, hair, and joints. Patient satisfaction in aesthetic PRP studies tends to land around 70 to 80 percent. And it sidesteps the regulatory gray zone that surrounds exosomes entirely. For a first-timer with a localized issue, PRP is usually the right call.
No. As of 2026, the FDA has not approved a single exosome product for injection or for treating any condition. The agency has warned the public about serious adverse events tied to unapproved exosome products and has sent a steady run of warning letters to sellers, including ones in late 2024 and 2025.
That doesn’t make exosomes useless. It makes sourcing everything.
This is where Formation draws a hard line. We only use human-grade compounds, the kind made and screened for use in people. We don’t touch research-grade molecules. Those are labeled “for research only,” and it’s illegal to administer, prescribe, buy, or dispense them for human use. Plenty of clinics blur that line. We won’t.
We also carry SSRP and ISSCA certification, two bodies that set standards for peptides, exosomes, and stem cell therapy. So you know the material going into you has been vetted.
And the person doing your injection does this every day. Jeff Atlas, PA-C, handles the treatments. He came to Formation from orthopaedics, where precise injections are daily work. Dr. Gopal Grandhige, a board-certified general surgeon, spearheads the clinic and the protocols behind them.
Start with your goal, your age, and the provider, not the marketing.
A few honest filters:
Sourcing isn’t a small detail. Unregulated exosome products have caused serious tissue damage, so asking where the material comes from isn’t paranoid. It’s a smart question.
The provider matters as much as the product, which is why we often combine treatments rather than bet on one fix. A skilled hand placing a vetted compound beats a flashy treatment in the wrong hands every time.
This is the part most clinics skip. Exosomes and PRP don’t do the heavy lifting. Your daily habits do. These therapies fine-tune the work your body is already doing and make it more efficient. They don’t replace it.
Think of longevity as a seesaw, not a climb. One side is building: protein, resistance training, recovery, the growth signals that PRP and exosomes amplify. The other side is renewal: fasting windows, sleep, autophagy, the cleanup that clears out damaged cells. Health lives in the swing between the two, not by camping on one side. We call it the Rhythm of Longevity. Always building wears you out. Always cleaning leaves nothing to maintain.
There’s a reason we push more than one lever at once. The body compensates. Lean on a single pathway and it quietly routes around you through another, and your result comes out weaker. So we pair the treatment with the habits that fit it, and often with other tools, like growth-hormone peptides on the building side or MOTS-C for the cellular cleanup side.
Skin and hair respond the same way. Sleep, protein, and the right routine give exosomes or PRP something to work with. Stack a treatment on top of a sloppy routine and you’ve wasted your money.
So, exosomes vs. PRP? If you’re new and your concern is local, start with PRP. If you’ve plateaued or you’re fighting age-related decline, exosomes can take you further, as long as they’re human-grade and placed by someone who does this every day. Either way, the treatment is the smaller half of the equation. Show up for the sleep, the protein, the training, and the recovery, and whichever one you choose will pay you back. Skip those, and no signal in a syringe will save you. That’s the honest version most clinics won’t tell you.
No. As of 2026, the FDA has not approved any exosome product for injection or for treating any condition. The agency has issued a public safety notification and a series of warning letters to companies selling unapproved exosome products. Treatments offered today fall outside formal FDA approval, which is why sourcing and provider quality matter so much.
PRP has the stronger track record for hair loss, with years of clinical use and more published studies behind it. Exosomes show promising early results for thinning hair, especially in people whose platelet quality is low. For most first-time patients, PRP is the sensible starting point, with exosomes as a step up if results stall.
Exosome treatments often need only one or two sessions because each dose carries more signaling power. PRP usually runs as a series of three to six sessions, with periodic maintenance after that. Your provider should map this to your specific goal rather than a fixed package.
It depends entirely on the source. Human-grade, screened exosomes given by a trained provider have a strong safety record, with side effects usually limited to mild redness or swelling. Unregulated or research-grade products have caused serious harm, including documented cases of infection and tissue damage. Always confirm the material is human-grade and independently tested.
Yes. Some clinics pair the two so the growth factors in PRP work alongside the signaling molecules in exosomes. This combination is a growing trend in regenerative aesthetics. It should be guided by a provider who can match the plan to your needs.
Yes. PRP is made from your own blood, so its quality drops as platelet health declines with age or habits like smoking. Exosomes come from young, screened donor cells, so their potency stays consistent regardless of the patient's age. This is one reason older patients sometimes see more from exosomes.
Results vary, but many patients see benefits lasting roughly six to 18 months with maintenance sessions. Longevity depends heavily on your habits, since sleep, protein, and training support whatever the treatment starts. Neither option is permanent, and both work best as part of an ongoing routine.

Facial Harmonization Step 2
It takes more than one treatment and often more than one treatment session to accomplish facial harmony and balance.
Here’s a look at step 2 in the journey for our surgical coordinator Hanna.
She wanted to address asymmetry and fullness in the lower face. To accomplish this we’ve started with Botox in the masseter to slim the jaw, and create a more feminine, heart shaped face. Now for step 2 we’re placing PDO lifting threads to enhance definition around the jawline without adding volume.
Stay tuned for step 3 and click the link in our bio to set up a consultation to determine your next steps to achieve your aesthetic goals.

The power of a profile transformation. 🔥
For this patient, we combined PDO Lifting Threads and advanced chin/jawline filler to completely redefine his lower face. By strategically lifting the mid-to-lower face and sculpting the jaw, we didn’t just enhance one feature—we elevated his entire facial appearance.
An incredible, natural-looking result that brings balance and confidence from every angle.
Note: Minor bunching or puckering is completely normal immediately following a PDO thread lift. The slight bunching visible in the after photo will fully subside on its own over the next 2-4 weeks as the threads settle.
