Preparation at Formation is clinical work, not paperwork. Before an operating room gets booked, your health and diet are assessed: recent labs covering hormonal, inflammatory, and general health markers, plus a medical history review and a risk assessment.
What comes back changes the plan. Nutrition, protein, supplements, and peptides are adjusted in the window immediately before and immediately after surgery, so your body has the raw material to build the most structure it can while it heals. Compression is planned in advance instead of bought in a panic. Home support and your ride across the bay are dialed in before the date is set.
Dr. Grandhige limits his surgical volume so this phase gets real attention. The same anesthesia provider and operating room staff work every one of his cases, along with his own physician assistant, who assists on all of his surgeries.
Sutures are sutures. The instrument is the same at every practice in Tampa Bay. The thinking around it is not.
Four versions, chosen by how far the loose skin travels and whether the muscle wall needs repair.
For a modest amount of loose skin below the navel with an intact muscle wall above it. The incision is short and stays low enough to sit under swimwear. A mini tummy tuck is offered in select cases only. Used on someone who needs full correction, it leaves a tight lower abdomen above a loose upper one, a mismatch harder to fix than the original problem.
The usual answer when correction is needed above and below the navel. The incision runs hip to hip above the pubic hairline, excess skin comes off, separated muscle is repaired with sutures, and the navel is repositioned so it reads as natural rather than placed. Incision height is planned against the waistband and swimwear you actually wear, not against a standard mark.
For laxity that carries around to the hips and flanks, common after larger weight changes. Skin and fat are addressed across the abdomen and the sides of the torso.
For patients whose loose skin wraps the entire trunk. Dr. Grandhige preserves the natural fat over the buttock and lifts the skin across it, because flattening that area is what makes a lower body lift look operated on rather than restored.
Recovery here is managed, not waited out. Dr. Grandhige works to what he calls the 60/40 Recovery Standard: the operation is roughly 60 percent of your result and the aftercare is the other 40. A badly run recovery can undo a well-executed tummy tuck, which is why Formation keeps that phase in house.
First 48 to 72 hours. Swelling and drainage are expected. A nurse is provided for the first 24 hours, and early walking starts right away.
Week one. Compression is worn continuously and you are not at work. Lymphatic treatment begins at your first post-operative visit, which controls swelling and keeps fluid from collecting. If a seroma forms, it gets drained in the office.
Weeks two to three. Light activity returns gradually and compression still matters. Most patients with desk jobs are back at work between days 10 and 14.
Four to six weeks. Swelling settles and lymphatic treatment continues.
Six to eight weeks. Unrestricted return to training. Do not rush this one. A muscle repair fails when it gets loaded early.
Three to six months. Final contour settles as the last swelling resolves.
Six to twelve months. Skin pliability returns and sensation comes back. You can see how that arc reads across the tummy tuck before and after gallery.
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a QUAD A accredited facility, which holds outpatient surgery to strict infection control and emergency preparedness standards.
Two things about the local calendar belong in your scheduling conversation, and neither shows up on a national tummy tuck page.
Compression through a Gulf coast summer is real. The garment is continuous through week one and still matters through weeks two and three. Patients who can pick their month often clear that window before August.
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 and peaks from mid-August into October. That overlaps the stretch of recovery when you cannot drive, cannot lift, and depend on a garment, in-office lymphatic treatment, and a same-week post-operative visit. Parts of Palm Harbor west of Alternate US 19, including Ozona and Crystal Beach, sit in Pinellas County’s coastal evacuation zones. Check your address against the county zone map before you pick a date. An evacuation order in your second post-operative week is a problem you do not want while you are still in a binder.
None of that rules out a fall surgery. It does mean a Palm Harbor patient and a South Tampa patient should not get the same calendar advice.
If you lost the weight on semaglutide or tirzepatide, the tummy tuck conversation changes in one specific way. Timing.
Your weight has to be stable before an operating room gets booked, not still trending down. Skin still retracting from an ongoing loss keeps changing after surgery, and the plan gets built on a moving target. Formation assesses health and diet before treatment for this reason, and Dr. Grandhige is willing to tell you to wait.
Disclose the medication and dose schedule during preoperative screening. These drugs slow gastric emptying, which is an anesthesia consideration rather than a cosmetic one.
In its 2024 procedural statistics, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that more than 800,000 aesthetic patients used weight loss medications that year, and that 20 percent of GLP-1 patients under its members’ care had already had surgery while another 39 percent were considering one. Abdominoplasty was the third most performed cosmetic surgery of 2024 at 171,064 procedures. So the question at your consultation is less whether you are a candidate and more whether you are a candidate yet.
Most pages list risks without numbers. Here are the numbers, and what they leave out.
A 2024 analysis in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal reviewed 55,596 abdominoplasties in the CosmetAssure database from 2015 to 2022 and put the overall major complication rate at 2.1 percent. Rates differed across the seven techniques studied, with fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty highest. Being male, underweight, morbidly obese, or diabetic each raised risk. After the authors adjusted for those factors, combining an abdominoplasty with another procedure showed no significant added risk of major complications.
Now the limitation, which matters as much as the finding. CosmetAssure is an insurance database built around complications serious enough to need intervention. It does not capture the ordinary problems handled in a clinic, and seroma is the most common of those. So 2.1 percent reads low partly because the most likely thing to go wrong is not in the count. An earlier analysis of the same database in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, covering 2008 to 2013, found a 4 percent rate and did flag combined procedures as a risk multiplier. Two papers, one database, opposite conclusions on combination surgery.
That is why the decision about liposuction added to a tummy tuck gets made case by case, against your labs and your anatomy, rather than from a number on a website.
Formation is at 1315 South Howard Avenue in Tampa’s SoHo district. From Palm Harbor that is roughly 30 miles, and the practical route is Tampa Road or Curlew Road east, then either the Veterans Expressway south or the Courtney Campbell Causeway across Old Tampa Bay. Budget 40 minutes to an hour depending on the crossing.
That distance changes the plan. You cannot drive for the first week after a tummy tuck, and your first post-operative visit is when lymphatic treatment starts. A 60-mile round trip over a causeway is a different favor to ask than a ten-minute ride.
Formation has standing relationships with a hotel near the studio and can arrange your room. Dr. Grandhige visits patients there during the first recovery days, so the earliest and least comfortable visits do not require the bay crossing at all. To set it up, contact the team.
Two more local details to plan around. If your home is one of Palm Harbor’s raised coastal builds, with the living floor above a ground-level garage, those stairs are not optional the way they are in a single-story house. Set up a ground-floor recovery space if you have one. If you do not, plan the hotel.
Early walking is encouraged, and the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail makes it easy. It is flat, paved, and mile marked, so you can measure a short out-and-back rather than guess. Keep it short and frequent for the first two weeks, and go early, because long stretches have no shade and you will be in a garment.
Recoil is the deciding factor. If a lifted fold of skin snaps back and there is no gap in your abdominal wall, liposuction or Lipo360 will do more for you with no excisional scar. If the skin hangs at rest or the midline domes when you sit up, no amount of contouring fixes it.
Plan on not driving for the first week. Your first post-operative visit falls inside that window and it is when lymphatic treatment starts, so arrange the ride before your surgery date. Many Palm Harbor patients use the hotel near the studio for those first days instead.
Unrestricted training comes back at six to eight weeks. A golf swing is a rotational load straight through the muscle repair, so it belongs at the back of that window rather than the front, whether you play Innisbrook, Highland Lakes, or Lansbrook. Confirm your date with Dr. Grandhige rather than guessing.
The operation is the same. The timing is not. Your weight needs to be stable rather than still falling, and the medication and dose schedule go into your preoperative screening because these drugs slow gastric emptying and that affects the anesthesia plan.
The scar is permanent and its position is decided during surgery, not afterward. Incision height is planned against the waistband and swimwear you actually wear, which is why bringing those to your consultation is more useful than describing them.
Sometimes, and it is decided case by case. The published data disagrees with itself on whether combining procedures raises major complication risk, so the call gets made against your labs, your anatomy, and how much work each area needs.
No, but check your evacuation zone first. If you live west of Alternate US 19 in Palm Harbor, Ozona, or Crystal Beach, a September or October date puts your garment-and-no-driving weeks inside the peak of the season.
