A PDO thread lift places dissolvable polydioxanone sutures under the skin to reposition loose tissue along the jawline and upper neck. The lift is there the day it is placed. It sits between filler and surgery, and it is a rented result rather than a permanent one, which is the part most pages skip.
Barbed PDO threads do two jobs at once. The barbs grip soft tissue and hold it in a higher position, and the thread itself triggers collagen formation along its track as it breaks down. The threads are gone within roughly six to nine months. The collagen laid down along the track is what carries whatever result remains after that.
That mechanism sets a ceiling. A thread pulls tissue toward an anchor point. It does not remove fat, it does not tighten skin from the inside, and it does not repair a muscle. If the thing bothering you is fullness under the chin rather than descent along the jaw, a thread lift moves the problem sideways instead of solving it.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in aesthetic surgery, and at Formation threads are used the way any supporting procedure gets used: strategically, alongside the thing that actually fixes the layer causing the complaint. Sometimes that means threads. Often it means something else, and you get told so. The same logic runs through every PDO thread lift in Tampa the practice performs.
Most necks show aging in more than one layer at once. That is the reason two people with the same complaint need different procedures. Before anyone at Formation discusses threads, your neck and jawline get read across four layers, and each layer has its own answer.
Fat sits between the skin and the muscle. No thread removes it. Neck liposuction does, through small incisions under the chin and behind the ears, and it is the single highest-yield move for a patient whose jawline is buried rather than sagging. Formation performs this in office under local anesthesia with an oral sedative.
The platysma is the sheet of muscle across the front of the neck. When its edges separate and pull forward, you get vertical cords that show most when you talk or clench. Threads do not reach this. Where platysmal bands are present, the answer is MyEllevate, a permanent suspension suture, combined with platysmaplasty. Formation plans to publish a dedicated page on that procedure.
This is the only layer threads genuinely address, and even here they reposition skin rather than shrink it. Radiofrequency tightening with FaceTite works differently: it heats the deep skin from beneath and contracts it over the structures below. Lasers and microneedling work from the surface down and cannot get to that depth. The practical difference is that a thread borrows tension from an anchor and a tightening device changes the tissue itself.
A weak chin or a soft jaw angle is a frame problem, and no amount of pulling fixes a frame. Projection comes from structure added at the bone: Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite, or Juvederm, a hyaluronic acid, placed along the jaw and chin. Patients who want a superhero jawline are almost always describing this layer, not the skin layer, and threads will disappoint them every time.
The candidates who do best have mild descent, decent skin recoil, and no meaningful fat pocket or banding. Formation works from an elasticity window of roughly skin age 25 to 55 for jawline and neck work. Inside that window, skin still springs back when released, which is what a thread needs in order to hold anything.
This matters more in Lutz than the search term suggests. The 2020 census counted 23,707 residents in the Lutz area, with 18.7 percent aged 65 or older. A meaningful share of people searching for a thread lift here are past the point where a thread will do much, and will get a better result from fat removal, tightening, or suspension. Patients whose laxity has gone past what tightening or suspension can reach need a surgical neck lift with skin excision. Formation does not perform that procedure and does not pretend otherwise. Dr. Grandhige stays in contact with the surgeons who do it well and points patients to the right one.
Two honest disqualifiers worth naming. Heavy jowls with a standing fold of skin at rest will not hold a thread. And if a surgical neck lift is likely within the next few years, the fibrosis that forms along thread tracks can make that operation less predictable, which is worth weighing before you rent a result you may pay for twice.
A 2026 meta-analysis pooling 26 studies on thread lifting reported swelling in about 34 percent of cases, bruising in about 26 percent, visible or palpable threads in about 10 percent, and dimpling or asymmetry in about 7 percent. Most of it is minor and settles within one to two weeks.
The same paper states its own limitation plainly, and that limitation is the interesting part. It did not separate results by thread material, so those figures pool PDO with polycaprolactone, polylactic acid, and permanent polypropylene threads across barbed, cogged, smooth, and mesh designs. Peer commentary published alongside an earlier meta-analysis on the same subject made the same point: thread lifting is not one technique but many. Read the numbers as a floor for asking your provider what they use and how often, not as a fixed risk for the specific thread going into your face.
One more piece of fine print. PDO threads are 510(k)-cleared Class II devices, not FDA-approved. Most are cleared for soft tissue approximation where an absorbable suture is appropriate, which is wound closure. A small number carry a specific suspension indication. Ask which brand is being used and what its clearance actually covers.
Thread placement happens in office under local anesthesia through entry points that close without stitches. Most sessions run under an hour depending on how many vectors are planned.
Expect tightness for the first few days, along with swelling and some bruising. A chin compression garment is worn early. Sleeping on your back for the first week protects the vectors while tissue settles. Formation’s standard for jawline and neck work is a return to training at one week, with the garment worn 12 to 24 hours a day through that stretch.
Puckering at entry or anchor points is common early and usually softens over one to two weeks. What does not belong in that category: new asymmetry after the first week, dimpling that is still there at a month, sharp one-sided pain, spreading redness or warmth, or numbness that is not improving. Those get looked at rather than waited out. Formation has written separately on what can go wrong with threads and why technique and anatomy knowledge carry most of the risk.
Every patient’s health and diet get assessed before treatment, not after. Nutrition, supplements and peptides are then adjusted in the window immediately before and immediately after so the body builds as much structure as it can while the thread is doing its work. Collagen formation is the entire long-term payoff of a PDO thread, and it runs on protein intake, controlled inflammation, and sleep. A patient who arrives inflamed and under-fed gets less out of the same thread.
Dr. Grandhige treats aftercare as 40 percent of the result and the procedure itself as the other 60, which is why Formation owns its post-treatment care rather than handing it off. Lymphatic providers, nutrition and coaching are vetted personally before any patient is sent to them. Follow-up runs for a full year, and nearly every patient stays through it.
Here is the part that decides outcomes. The thread is a commodity. Any practice in Hillsborough County can buy the same box. What differs is the read that happens before it comes out of the package and the thinking that surrounds it afterward.
Formation is at 1315 South Howard Avenue in South Tampa, roughly 15 to 25 miles south of Lutz depending on where in Lutz you start. That spread is not a rounding error. Lutz covers four ZIP codes, 33548, 33549, 33558 and 33559, and those ZIPs run north past County Line Road into unincorporated southern Pasco County as far as State Road 54, which is why one neighbor’s drive is twenty minutes longer than another’s.
From the Lutz Lake Fern Road corridor and Cheval, the Suncoast Parkway to the Veterans Expressway is usually the cleaner run. From the US-41 and Lake Park side, Dale Mabry Highway straight south is shorter on paper and slower in practice once you hit Hillsborough Avenue. Thread placement is a same-day, drive-yourself-home appointment, so plan the return trip outside the afternoon squeeze.
Patients traveling further in have hotels near the office where Formation holds relationships, and Dr. Grandhige visits patients in their rooms in the early days rather than making them come back in. That policy started with the surgical patients and it applies to anyone who needs it.
One outcome that shows what a correct read looks like. A professional in his forties came in convinced his neck made him look heavier and older than he felt, and he had always assumed he was simply built that way. He was fit, and the area had never responded to weight loss. The answer was not a thread. It was targeted neck and jawline contouring, preserving his natural jaw angles and avoiding aggressive tightening. Colleagues told him afterward that he looked more rested. He started getting in photographs again.
Two ways in, and they are different things. The in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige carries a fee and is a full surgical assessment: anatomical evaluation, candidacy, an honest read on options and limits, and guidance on timing. That fee can be applied toward any procedure or product at the practice. The threads themselves absorb within roughly six to nine months. The visible lift generally holds somewhere in the range of a year before settling back toward where it started, with the collagen along the thread track providing some residual benefit. Treat it as renewable rather than one and done.
No. A double chin is fat sitting between skin and muscle, and threads do not remove fat. Neck liposuction addresses that layer directly. Patients frequently arrive asking for threads and leave with a plan for liposuction instead, because that is the layer causing what they see.
Local anesthesia covers the placement itself. The days afterward involve tightness and soreness more than pain, particularly when you talk, chew or turn your head. Most patients describe the sensation as being pulled rather than cut.
They cannot. A facelift releases and redrapes tissue and removes skin. A thread borrows tension from an anchor point and holds tissue in a slightly higher position for a limited time. Anyone selling threads as a facelift substitute is describing a result the mechanism cannot produce.
They are 510(k)-cleared as Class II devices, which is a different and lower bar than approval. Most PDO threads are cleared for soft tissue approximation, meaning wound closure, with a small number carrying a specific suspension indication. Ask which product is being used.

Age matters less than skin recoil, though the two travel together. Formation works from an elasticity window of roughly skin age 25 to 55 for this area. Outside it, tightening or suspension usually produces a better result than a thread will, and that gets said plainly at the evaluation.

A PDO thread lift is a real procedure with a real, narrow job. It repositions lax tissue along the jawline for a defined stretch of time, and for the right anatomy it is a reasonable choice with little downtime. For the wrong anatomy it is money spent on the wrong layer, and no amount of skill at placement changes that.
