A PDO thread lift lifts a softening jawline and lower face using absorbable sutures placed under the skin, with no incision and no general anesthetic. The lift is there the moment the threads are anchored, and a milder version of it holds for about a year. At Formation, roughly fourteen miles from Temple Terrace, Dr. Gopal Grandhige places every thread himself.
PDO is polydioxanone, an absorbable suture material used in general and cardiovascular surgery since the 1980s. The threads used for lifting carry small barbs along their length. Placed under the skin through a needle or cannula, the barbs catch tissue, and the thread is drawn up and back toward a fixed point near the temple or in front of the ear. That movement is the lift.
A second effect follows. The body treats each thread as a mild injury and lays down collagen along its path over two to three months, which is why skin quality often reads better at month three than at week one. Both effects are temporary by design. The threads absorb, the collagen remodels, and the lift declines toward baseline. Anyone describing a thread lift as a substitute for a facelift is selling you something. It is a repeatable holding measure for early and middle stage facial descent, and that is a real use.
Aging in the lower face is rarely one problem. Most faces show change across several layers at once: fat that has shifted and thinned, skin that has lost recoil, muscle that has slackened, and bone that has resorbed at the jaw and chin. A suture addresses one of those. Bone loss along the chin and jaw edge is a volume problem, which is what jawline fillers address rather than a suture. Knowing which one you have is the whole decision.
Dr. Grandhige runs the same three checks on every face before agreeing to place a thread. Two of them you can run in a mirror right now.
Place two fingers flat on your cheekbone and press up and slightly back, about a fingertip’s width. Watch the jowl and the jaw. If the jowl softens and the jawline reads cleaner, there is descended tissue a suture can move. If almost nothing changes, your issue is not descent, and a thread has nothing to reposition.
A thread has to hold onto something. The fixed tissue at the temple and in front of the ear carries the load for months. Thin, sun-damaged skin over that zone gives a barb very little to grip, which matters more in Tampa than patients expect.
Descended fat is weight. A suture holds skin and the layer immediately beneath it, not a heavy fat pad under the chin. When the load is fat rather than laxity, fat comes out first and the suture becomes optional. Neck liposuction is often the more direct route in that case. This is where a surgeon and an injector give different answers, because one of them can remove the fat.
Clear all three and threads are a reasonable choice. Fail check one and technique will not rescue it. Fail check two or three and there is a better order of operations.
The patients who do best are in their late thirties through their fifties, with mild to moderate descent, skin that still recoils when released, and a clear view of how long a suture lasts.
Three patterns get turned down here. The first is heavy submental fat presented as a jawline problem. Fat gets treated as fat, which usually means fat removal or fat reduction paired with tightening, and Dr. Grandhige performs that work himself. The second is skin past the point a suture can hold. Once a standing fold sits at the jaw or neck at rest, sutures tent it rather than lift it, and Formation refers those patients to surgeons who do facelift work well. The third is anyone wanting a facelift result without facelift recovery, who leaves disappointed by any thread, placed by anyone. Scar history matters too, which is why we address whether PDO threads cause keloids before anything is placed.
One regulatory point belongs here, because it changes how you read every provider’s claims. PDO sutures are 510(k)-cleared as Class II devices for soft tissue approximation, the surgical wound-closure indication. Cosmetic facial lifting is off-label for most products on the market, though one product family carries a narrower clearance covering mid-face suspension for nasolabial folds. A clinic writing “FDA-approved for lifting” is either careless or counting on you not to check.
First forty-eight hours: tightness that feels stranger than it hurts, some swelling, sometimes bruising at the entry points. You sleep on your back, propped up.
Days three to seven: bruising fades and the pulling sensation eases. Most people are back at work and comfortable on video calls inside a week. For the jawline and upper neck portion, training resumes at one week.
Weeks two to four: swelling resolves and the lift settles a few millimeters below where it looked on day one. Expected, not a failure.
Months two to three: the collagen response along the thread paths shows up. Texture and firmness usually read better here than immediately after treatment.
Months nine to fifteen: the threads have absorbed and the lift has declined toward baseline. Patients either repeat or move to something more durable.
On risk, pooled complication data from a 2026 meta-analysis of twenty-six studies covering 2,827 patients put swelling near thirty-four percent, bruising near twenty-six percent, visible or palpable threads near ten percent, and dimpling near seven percent. The authors were direct about the limitation: variability between studies ran as high as ninety-two percent for swelling, so the real rate at any one practice can sit above or below those figures. Read them as a range, not a forecast. Dimpling and visible threads are the two that change how a face looks, and both track with how deep the thread sits. Formation is equally direct about the downside of a PDO thread lift.
You are awake. Numbing cream goes on first, then local anesthetic at the entry points and along the planned paths. Nothing is placed until the face is marked while you sit upright, because tissue sits differently lying down and a lift planned on a reclined face lands in the wrong position.
Entry points are small enough to close without a stitch. Each thread is drawn to its anchor and tensioned by feel. Placement runs roughly forty-five to ninety minutes for a full lower face and less for a jawline alone. If you have read that a thread lift takes fifteen minutes, that was either a very small treatment or a page written by someone who has never done one.
Formation records the entry points, the thread count and the tension notes for every case, and gives you that record. It matters more if you later have surgery, because a surgeon needs to know where the thread tracks run.
Dr. Grandhige places every thread. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery, with fellowship training in burn surgery, critical care, and minimally invasive surgery. That route into aesthetics is unusual, and it shows up mainly in how conservative the planning is.
Threads reposition. Energy tightens. Fillers add. Surgery removes. Most disappointment in this category comes from buying one of those when the anatomy called for another.
Filler adds volume and can rebuild a jaw or chin edge, but it will not move descended tissue upward. Adding volume to a descending face makes it heavier.
Energy-based tightening works from underneath and holds longer than a suture. FaceTite, a radiofrequency-assisted device, needs a small access point and a real recovery, which is the trade. Whether FaceTite or Renuvion suits your skin is a separate question.
The honest weak point of PDO shows up against a permanent suture. A barbed PDO thread dissolves. MyEllevate, a nonabsorbable suspension suture, does not, and it can be removed if it ever needs to be. Where the finding is slackness in the platysma with visible platysmal bands along the neck, that suture paired with platysmaplasty is the more direct answer, and a PDO thread is a temporary approximation of it. The threads are the same product sold to every clinic in Hillsborough County. The instrument is identical everywhere. The thinking around it is not.
Before treatment, your health and diet are assessed rather than assumed. Nutrition, supplements and peptides are adjusted in the window immediately before and after, so the body builds the most structure it can along the thread paths, since collagen is most of what you keep past month three. Protein intake, inflammation control, sleep and alcohol get dialed in. Patients who arrive inflamed swell longer and hold less.
Dr. Grandhige’s position is blunt: the procedure is about sixty percent of the result and managed recovery is the other forty. That ratio came out of surgery, and it applies with more force to threads, because a suture depends on how tissue heals around it. Follow-up runs for a year, not until the swelling stops.
No established thread lift provider sits inside Temple Terrace city limits. Whichever direction you choose, you are driving, so the drive is worth planning rather than discovering.

One point in your favor on the first route: FDOT finished repaving Fowler Avenue from west of 51st Street to west of Riverhills Drive on February 6, 2026, along with a new mid-block pedestrian crossing. That stretch is how most of Temple Terrace reaches I-275, and it is in the best shape it has been in years.
Because you arrive awake and drive home the same day, most patients coming from the Riverhills side take the first appointment of the morning and are back north before the afternoon build-up on I-275.

The lift is strongest in the first month and declines from there, with most patients back near baseline between nine and fifteen months. The collagen along the thread paths lingers slightly longer.
Numbing cream and local anesthetic handle the sharp sensation. Most people report pressure and a pulling feeling as each thread is tensioned, then soreness for two or three days.
Usually yes, though sequence matters. Heavy filler in the mid-face changes how tissue sits, so Dr. Grandhige will want to know what was placed and when before planning thread paths.
Not alone. A suture holds skin and the layer beneath it, not a fat pad. When fat under the chin is the main finding, fat reduction comes first.
Say so at consultation. Thread tracks leave fibrous tissue behind, which can make a later facelift technically harder for whoever performs it. Not a reason to avoid threads, but it belongs in the decision.
No, and treat any page saying otherwise with caution. PDO sutures are cleared as Class II devices for soft tissue approximation, and cosmetic lifting is off-label for most products.
