Yes. In most cases, bumps from PDO threads go away on their own. Small lumps, dimples, or ridges after a thread lift are usually your tissue reacting to the sutures, and they tend to flatten within a few days to about two weeks as swelling drops. I’ll be straight with you, though. Not every bump behaves the same way, and a small number stick around long enough to need a hand.
I’ve seen plenty of these walk into our Tampa clinic. Most were fine. A few needed a quick fix. The trick is knowing which is which.
Bumps from PDO threads are lumps, dimples, or ridges that appear after a thread lift. They form when the body reacts to the absorbable threads, when a thread sits too close to the skin’s surface, or when swelling gathers around one. The large majority fade with no treatment at all.
PDO threads tighten loose skin by lifting tissue and sparking new collagen, so a little lumpiness early on is often just the process doing its job.
Bumps can show up within hours. The threads pass through soft tissue, and your body answers with extra fluid and blood flow to the spot. That reaction peaks in the first two to three days, which is when lumps and firmness feel most obvious.
Some of what you feel early is plain swelling sitting around a thread, not the thread itself. Bruising often joins in around day three. This is also why the thread lift restrictions matter more than most people expect. Poking, heavy workouts, and hard chewing can nudge a fresh thread and make a bump worse.
Most do. A 2025 meta-analysis of thread-lift complications found dimpling or asymmetry in about 7% of cases, and swelling in roughly 16%, with the bulk of it minor and short-lived. On RealSelf, close to 76% of thread-lift reviewers still rate the procedure worth it.
This is the timeline I give patients. Most bumps settle within two weeks. A few firm ridges hang on for four to six weeks. The threads themselves dissolve over about six to nine months, and as they do, small irregularities usually smooth out. If a bump is shrinking week over week, even slowly, that’s the pattern you want.
A few things push a bump past the normal window. More threads mean more tissue reaction. Threads placed too shallow tend to show. Areas that move a lot, like around the mouth, hold onto lumps longer.
Your own healing matters too. Thread count and placement drive a lot of the risk. This is part of why some surgeons stopped offering thread lifts at all. The result leans hard on technique, and sloppy placement shows up as bumps. More threads is not better. I’d rather place fewer and place them well.
Start gentle, and start slow. For most early bumps, time and light care do the work. Because the threads are absorbable sutures that your body breaks down over months, a lot of small lumps ease off as the material softens.
Don’t dig at a lump or try to “pop” it. You can’t, and you’ll only irritate the area.
Most bumps aren’t. But a few signs mean you should call your provider instead of waiting it out.
Watch for a lump that grows instead of shrinks, plus warmth, spreading redness, real pain, drainage, or fever. Those can point to infection, which runs near 2% of cases in the research. A hard lump that won’t move after several weeks is also worth a look. The reassuring part is that almost anything can be fixed with a short in-office visit, so there’s no reason to panic or to start prodding at your own face. Trust the trend. Shrinking is good. Growing is not.
Provider skill beats thread brand, every time. Newer barbed and pre-loaded thread designs in 2026 make placement a bit more forgiving, but they don’t fix a heavy hand.
Before you book, ask three things: how many threads are planned and where, how often the provider handles bumps or revisions, and what the plan is if one shows up. These questions get skipped, and they tell you more than any before-and-after photo. Set your expectations too. A systematic review found patients over 50 saw dimpling around 16% of the time, versus 5.6% in younger patients, so age and skin quality belong in the plan.
So, will bumps from PDO threads go away? Almost always, yes, and usually inside of two weeks with nothing more than patience and gentle care. The bumps that linger are the exception, and they respond well to a quick in-office fix. What keeps your odds low is the part that happens before the first thread goes in: a careful plan and a steady hand. Knowing how long results last helps too, so you don’t over-treat in one sitting.
