Tesamorelin is generally considered the stronger option for fat loss, particularly for reducing visceral abdominal fat. It is the only growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) analog with an FDA-approved indication directly tied to fat reduction. Sermorelin, while effective at boosting overall growth hormone levels, is better suited for general anti-aging and body composition improvements rather than targeted fat loss. Both tesamorelin and sermorelin belong to a class of compounds known as growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) analogs. That means neither one is synthetic growth hormone itself. Instead, they signal your pituitary gland to produce and release more of your own growth hormone naturally.
Sermorelin is a truncated version of GHRH. It contains the first 29 amino acids of the naturally occurring 44-amino-acid GHRH molecule. Tesamorelin is a modified form of the full 44-amino-acid GHRH molecule. It includes a trans-3-hexenoic acid group attached to the tyrosine at the front end of the chain, which makes it more resistant to enzymatic breakdown. This structural modification means tesamorelin stays active longer in the body and delivers a stronger, more sustained pulse of growth hormone. The FDA approved tesamorelin specifically for reducing excess abdominal fat in HIV-positive patients with lipodystrophy, making it the only GHRH analog with an FDA-approved indication directly tied to fat reduction.
The key takeaway: both peptides stimulate your own growth hormone production, but tesamorelin does so with greater potency and duration, and it is the only one with direct clinical evidence supporting its use for visceral fat loss.
When it comes to fat loss, not all growth hormone stimulation is equal. The type of fat you are trying to lose matters, and so does the strength of the hormonal signal driving that loss.
