In the data, those surgeons post the lowest complication rates. That’s not opinion. It’s outcomes. Every surgery carries known risks, from seroma to infection, and a good surgeon reviews them with you before you consent.

And it won’t erase every stretch mark. Marks below the incision line often go with the removed skin. Marks up higher usually stay. Any surgeon who promises otherwise is overselling.
Actually, that framing isn’t quite right. A tummy tuck doesn’t replace a healthy life. It finishes what a healthy life started, once diet and exercise have taken you as far as they can.
The best candidate is at a stable weight, in good health, a non-smoker, and bothered by loose skin or a muscle split that won’t respond to effort. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes a good candidate the same way: healthy, stable weight, realistic expectations, not smoking.
Smoking is the deal-breaker I push hardest on. It chokes blood flow to healing skin and drives up the risk of wounds that won’t close. Most surgeons, ours included, want you off nicotine for weeks before and after. This isn’t a suggestion. It’s the difference between a clean result and a complication.
Weight matters too. Surgery works best once you’re near your stable weight and holding there. If you’re in the middle of a big weight-loss effort, it’s usually smarter to wait until the scale settles. That’s not us stalling you. It’s protecting the result you’re about to invest months of recovery in.
And not everyone needs the full operation. If you only need the lower belly tightened below the navel, a mini tummy tuck with a shorter scar may be the better fit. It’s a smaller surgery with a faster bounce-back, though it does less. Honesty about which one you need is the mark of a surgeon worth your time.
Two shifts are worth knowing about this year.
First, the GLP-1 wave. A big slice of new patients are post-weight-loss cases, and their skin laxity behaves differently than a post-pregnancy belly. Fat leaves, and the skin doesn’t always follow. Recovery is longer than the internet lets on, and this is where I see the most surprise.
Plan on taking it easy for the first two weeks. You’ll wear a compression garment to control swelling, and some patients have small drains for a few days to clear extra fluid. You’ll sleep with your knees bent and your upper body propped up to keep tension off the incision. And you’ll want a friend or family member around at the start, because bending, lifting, and reaching are off-limits.
Short walks, though, start almost right away. Gentle movement keeps blood moving and lowers the risk of clots, so we get patients up and shuffling around the house within a day.
Most people head back to a desk job in two to three weeks. Real exercise waits longer, usually four to six weeks, and full healing takes a few months. Push too hard too soon and you invite swelling or a seroma. The patients with the smoothest recoveries are the ones who follow instructions and don’t play hero.
Swelling comes and goes for months. That’s normal. Flattest in the morning, puffier by night, is a pattern almost everyone notices in the early going.
