For most patients, not much. Mild swelling, bruising, and some temporary numbness are the usual suspects, and they fade within a few weeks. The serious stuff, like burns, nerve injury, infection, or a hematoma, is rare, and it almost always traces back to who actually did the procedure.
FaceTite is a minimally invasive skin-tightening treatment that uses radiofrequency energy under the skin to firm the jawline, lower face, and neck. Its risks split in two. The first is common, short-lived side effects like swelling and numbness. The second is rare but serious complications such as burns or nerve injury, which good technique mostly prevents.
I’ve sat with plenty of patients who’d read three horror stories online and walked in terrified. So here’s the real picture, the kind we give people at Formation in Tampa. We won’t talk price or rank of every device. We’ll cover what actually goes wrong, how often, and how to stay on the safe side of the odds.

Heat is the treatment. It builds new collagen and contracts tissue for a tighter look. But heat is also where the risk lives, which is why temperature control and a careful hand matter.
So what can go wrong with FaceTite? Most problems are minor and pass on their own. A small number are serious. The data backs the reassuring version, as long as an experienced surgeon runs the device.
In one published series of neck and lower-face RFAL patients, temporary swelling showed up in roughly 9% and small firm nodules in about 8.5%, both self-limited. A separate group of 247 patients saw prolonged swelling past six weeks in about 4.8%, and a brief weakness at the jaw nerve in around 1.2%, all of which resolved on their own. Major complications sit under 1% in skilled hands. On RealSelf, FaceTite holds a Worth It rating around 73% to 80%, with the unhappy reviews usually tied to facelift-level expectations or a less experienced provider.
Almost everyone gets some swelling, bruising, and numbness. These aren’t complications. They’re your skin healing.
Swelling peaks in the first day or three and eases over two to three weeks, though light puffiness can hang on longer. Bruising fades inside one to two weeks. You’re numbed during the treatment, so you mostly feel pressure and warmth. Over-the-counter pain relief covers the days after for most people, and published reports note that strong painkillers usually aren’t needed. Pain that climbs instead of fading is worth a call.
Right after FaceTite, your skin may not feel smooth. Small lumps or mild asymmetry are common while swelling drops, and they usually even out. The entry points are tiny, often smaller than a grain of rice, so visible scars are uncommon. Poor aftercare, infection, or your own healing can raise the odds, so caring for your skin the right way matters more than people think.
These are the complications that send people to the ER. Uncommon, but worth knowing the warning signs.
Low-risk, but not zero. Watch for spreading redness, warmth, worsening pain, pus, or fever. Call your clinic the same day if you see them. Most infections clear with antibiotics when caught early.
A burn happens when heat isn’t controlled, almost always from poor technique or the wrong settings. This is the risk that should make you picky about who treats you. Federal regulators noticed. In October 2025, the FDA warned that radiofrequency microneedling devices had caused burns, scarring, fat loss, and nerve damage in some patients. That alert covers a different RF tool than FaceTite, but the lesson carries, since RF energy can injure you when the operator cuts corners.
A hematoma is a pocket of blood under the skin: sudden swelling, a firm or painful lump, dark bruising. It can need draining. It’s rare, but real even in good hands. One published case describes a neck hematoma serious enough to affect a patient’s breathing after RFAL, a reminder to get sudden, one-sided swelling checked fast.
Almost never. Most numbness or weakness is temporary nerve irritation that fades within weeks to months. In the research, brief weakness at the jaw nerve, the one that controls part of your smile, showed up in around 1% of cases and resolved on its own. Permanent injury is far rarer, and it’s tied to aggressive technique near nerve-dense areas.
FaceTite isn’t for everyone, and a good clinic will turn some people away. If your skin is very thin or heavily sagging, you’re often better off with surgery. Most people take three to five days of social downtime and one to two weeks before they feel fully themselves. The first three days bring the most swelling and tightness. Week one shows early improvement. Weeks two and three bring visible change as swelling drops. The full result, driven by new collagen, lands around the three-to-six-month mark. Healing isn’t identical for everyone, so what to expect depends on your skin, age, and how much was treated.
So, is it worth it? For the right person, treated by the right hands, yes. The common side effects are mild and short. The scary ones are rare and largely preventable.
If you take one thing from this, let it be a single idea. When people ask what can go wrong with FaceTite, the most useful answer isn’t a long list of complications. It’s that almost everything that goes wrong comes down to who’s holding the probe. Pick a board-certified, experienced surgeon who’ll tell you the truth about your skin, and you’ve handled the biggest risk before the device is switched on.
