Stop PRP for hair and the hair you grew back starts to leave again. Not all at once. But it goes. That’s the honest answer to what happens when you stop PRP for hair, and it’s the part a lot of clinics stay quiet about when they sell you that first round of sessions.
PRP doesn’t cure your hair loss. It manages it. The genetics that shrink your follicles keep working in the background the whole time you’re treating, and the day you quit, those follicles start sliding back toward where your DNA was pushing them all along.
Platelet-rich plasma for hair is an injectable treatment that pulls growth factors from your own blood and puts them back into your scalp to wake up shrinking follicles. It treats androgenetic alopecia, the most common cause of thinning. It does not stop the condition, so gains fade once maintenance ends, usually within 12 to 18 months.
I’ll say what plenty of providers won’t. If you can’t commit to upkeep, PRP by itself is probably the wrong place to put your time and money. We’ve watched this play out with patients at Formation, our regenerative medicine clinic in Tampa. People love their first results, life gets busy, they skip a year, and they’re back in the chair wondering why their part looks wider again.
PRP regrows hair by feeding follicles, not by fixing why they’re failing. The effect lasts only as long as you keep treating.
Your blood carries platelets packed with growth factors. We draw a small sample, spin it down to concentrate those platelets, and inject the concentrate into your scalp. Those growth factors feed the tiny blood vessels around each follicle, nudge resting follicles into their growth phase, and slow the shrinking that pattern hair loss causes.
None of that touches the root problem. Pattern hair loss runs on hormones and genetics. Your follicles are wired to shrink over years, and PRP doesn’t rewrite that wiring. It keeps the pressure off for a while.
That’s why the hair restoration surgeons who do this full time are clear about one thing: stopping sends growth back to your baseline. There’s no version of this where a few sessions lock in results forever.
Most people hold their results for 12 to 18 months after the last session, then thinning creeps back in. Some notice it sooner.
The drop-off usually runs in three stages:
By month 18, most patients sit close to where they began. A 2015 study with long-term follow-up documented this fade once treatment stops, and newer reviews keep confirming it. The hair you lose isn’t extra. It’s the same hair PRP was holding in place.
How fast it happens depends on you, and on whether your kind of hair loss can be reversed at the stage you’re in. A 28-year-old with early thinning and a slow-moving family history might coast for the full 18 months. A 45-year-old with aggressive loss can see it inside a year.
No. Stopping PRP doesn’t drop you below your natural baseline. Your hair returns to the loss your genetics were always going to cause, not worse.
There’s a fear floating around the forums that quitting PRP triggers a crash that leaves you balder than day one. It doesn’t.
Actually, that’s not quite the full story. You might see a short burst of shedding after you stop, or even right after a session. That’s the hair cycle resetting, not your scalp falling apart. The hairs you shed were already on their way out, and they’d have left with or without PRP because of pattern hair loss.
The real-world risk profile here is mild. Roughly 10 to 30% of patients report short-lived shedding, tenderness, or minor swelling, and serious complications sit under 0.1% in large reviews. So the thing people fear most, getting worse than they started, isn’t the actual risk. The actual risk is losing the ground you gained.
A maintenance plan means one PRP session every 3 to 6 months after your initial series, often paired with a daily medication. That rhythm keeps your gains instead of letting them slip away over a year.
At Formation, Jeff Atlas, PA-C handles the injections. He came to us from orthopaedics, where PRP has been part of treating joints and tendons for years, so the technique is second nature for him. (No, Dr. Gopal Grandhige isn’t the one holding the needle. He built the clinic and sets the protocols. Jeff does the hands-on work.)
We also hold SSRP and ISSCA certifications, the bodies that certify how peptides, exosomes, and stem cell work gets done. That matters more than people realize, because PRP quality swings hard on protocol. Platelet concentrations above roughly 1 million per microliter are linked to better outcomes, and you only get that consistently from someone who runs the prep the same correct way every time.
For patients who want to stack their odds, we pair PRP with exosome therapy depending on the case. You can meet the people behind these protocols on our team page before you ever book.
PRP works better next to a daily medication and other regenerative options than it does on its own. Stacking treatments slows loss from more than one direction.
Studies from 2024 and 2025 put improvement in density and thickness around 70 to 84% for good candidates, with about 76% satisfaction in one 2025 review. Across roughly 231 patient reviews on RealSelf, about 93% rate PRP for hair “Worth It.” Read the fine print, though: the happy ones almost all kept up maintenance.
The trade-off is simple. This works for early to moderate thinning. For someone already slick bald in a spot, PRP won’t raise follicles from the dead, and a transplant conversation makes more sense. Pick the tool that fits the stage you’re actually at, not the one you wish you were at. Adding peptide treatments can give the right candidate one more layer of support.
The regenerative side of this field is the fastest-growing part. A 2024 AAFPRS survey found 57% of members name regenerative medicine like PRP and exosomes as the future of hair treatment. The science is moving, but the rule hasn’t changed: PRP is management, and management means staying in the game.
The most expensive mistake is stopping completely after your initial series. You lose what you built and have to start over.
The industry loves to sell the starter package and stay quiet about the rest. I think that’s backwards. The starter series is the easy part. The maintenance is where results actually live.
The global hair restoration market is set to grow from around USD 8.71 billion in 2026 to USD 25.66 billion by 2033, a 16.7% annual clip, with regenerative options like PRP driving a big chunk of it. A surprising share of that demand is people restarting after they quit too soon. They reverse their own progress, then pay to rebuild it.
Before you start anywhere, ask a few questions:
A provider who can’t answer those cleanly is one to walk away from.
So, what happens when you stop PRP for hair? You drift back to the loss your genes always had planned, slowly, over a year or so. That’s not a reason to skip PRP. It’s a reason to treat it like the long game it is. If you’re in Tampa and want a plan you’ll actually stick with, book a consultation and we’ll map maintenance around your hair instead of a one-size package.
BPC-157 is not an instant fix, but when administered correctly under medical supervision, it can be a highly effective tool for accelerating recovery, supporting gut health, and promoting tissue repair. Most patients begin noticing early improvements within the first one to two weeks, with the most meaningful results taking shape between weeks four and eight. The key variables that determine how quickly you respond include the quality of the product you are using, the accuracy of your dosing protocol, and whether your nutrition and lifestyle habits are working with your treatment rather than against it.
What separates a productive BPC-157 experience from a frustrating one often comes down to where and how you receive it. Research-grade peptides purchased online carry real risks, from contamination and inconsistent potency to the complete absence of medical oversight. At Formation, every peptide protocol is built around human-grade medications from licensed compounding pharmacies, personalized dosing guided by Dr. Gopal Grandhige, and nutritional support from our concierge dietitian to help your body make the most of every dose.
If you are ready to take a medically guided approach to peptide therapy, contact Formation at (813) 922-2920 or visit our site to schedule your consultation. The right protocol, the right product, and the right team make all the difference.
Your hair gradually returns to the loss your genetics were already causing, usually within 12 to 18 months of your last session. PRP manages androgenetic alopecia but doesn't cure it, so the follicle support fades once treatment ends. You won't drop below your natural baseline, but the density you gained does slip away.
No. Stopping PRP returns you to your natural progression, not below it. Some people see a short burst of shedding as the hair cycle resets, but that hair was already on its way out. Serious complications from PRP sit under 0.1% in large reviews.
Most people hold results for 6 to 12 months, with visible thinning by 12 to 18 months. Early thinning patients with a slow family history tend to last longer. Aggressive pattern loss can show within a year.
It usually fades gradually rather than all at once, following the same timeline your genetics set. A brief uptick in shedding can happen right after stopping, but it's temporary. Maintenance every 3 to 6 months is what prevents the slide.
You can, but results often decline compared with keeping both. Studies from 2024 and 2025 show combining PRP with a daily medication outperforms either one alone, reaching 70 to 84% improvement in density for good candidates. Many people use medication to stretch the time between PRP sessions rather than replace them.
Yes. Recent meta-analyses show PRP improves density and thickness in female pattern hair loss, and demand among women keeps rising. ISHRS reported female hair restoration patients climbing 16.5% in recent data. Results still depend on candidacy and consistent maintenance.
Exosomes are an emerging regenerative option that may offer longer-lasting effects in early studies, but they aren't FDA-approved for hair and face more regulatory scrutiny. PRP has a longer track record and a strong safety profile. At Formation we hold SSRP and ISSCA certifications covering both, so we match the option to the patient.

Facial Harmonization Step 2
It takes more than one treatment and often more than one treatment session to accomplish facial harmony and balance.
Here’s a look at step 2 in the journey for our surgical coordinator Hanna.
She wanted to address asymmetry and fullness in the lower face. To accomplish this we’ve started with Botox in the masseter to slim the jaw, and create a more feminine, heart shaped face. Now for step 2 we’re placing PDO lifting threads to enhance definition around the jawline without adding volume.
Stay tuned for step 3 and click the link in our bio to set up a consultation to determine your next steps to achieve your aesthetic goals.

The power of a profile transformation. 🔥
For this patient, we combined PDO Lifting Threads and advanced chin/jawline filler to completely redefine his lower face. By strategically lifting the mid-to-lower face and sculpting the jaw, we didn’t just enhance one feature—we elevated his entire facial appearance.
An incredible, natural-looking result that brings balance and confidence from every angle.
Note: Minor bunching or puckering is completely normal immediately following a PDO thread lift. The slight bunching visible in the after photo will fully subside on its own over the next 2-4 weeks as the threads settle.
