not much. Most people rate PRP for hair around a 2 to 4 on a 10-point scale, closer to a quick pinch than a real ache. You feel a run of small pricks across the scalp, and then it’s over.
PRP for hair (platelet-rich plasma) is a treatment that uses your own blood to wake up tired hair follicles. A small blood sample gets spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. Those platelets are then injected into thinning spots on the scalp, where their growth factors signal follicles to grow again.
I won’t cover hair transplant surgery here. That’s a separate procedure with its own recovery, and it earns its own page. This is about the needle, the sting, and what your visit actually feels like.
It hurts a little, but less than most people picture. Patient reports put scalp PRP at a mild 2 to 4 out of 10, with brief soreness for a day or two after.
The blood draw at the start feels like any lab test. The injections are where you notice it, and there are a lot of them. A full session can mean 100 or more tiny injections across the scalp, each lasting a second or two. The front hairline and temples tend to feel more tender than the crown, because the skin there is thinner and packed with nerves. In one small study, everyone felt a mild sting during injection, but it lingered past four hours in only about a quarter of them. So the range is real, and your own scalp and nerves decide where you land.
If you want the bigger picture on whether the treatment actually stops hair loss, read that first, then come back to weigh the discomfort.
The session is short, and the part you feel is only a slice of it. The order goes like this:
Because results build over months, you’ll repeat this a few times. Plan on three to four sessions to start, spaced four to six weeks apart, with light upkeep every 6 to 12 months. The exact count is personal, so it helps to know how many treatments a real plan involves before you commit.
This is the part most articles skip. The biggest factor in how much PRP hurts isn’t the needle size or the numbing cream. It’s the hand holding the syringe.
A slow, precise injection at the right depth barely registers. A rushed or too-deep one stings, bruises, and can irritate a small nerve. I’ve seen patients walk out of one place rattled, then sit down somewhere else and say, “Wait, that was it?”
At Formation, your PRP is done by Jeff Atlas, PA-C, not by Dr. Gopal Grandhige himself, who owns the clinic and provides the medical oversight. Jeff came from orthopaedics, a field built on injecting joints and soft tissue with precision, and he brings all of that to Formation. That training shows up directly in how the scalp work feels. Dr. Grandhige, a board-certified general surgeon, sets the protocols, and Jeff runs them. You’re not handing your scalp to someone who picked up PRP at a weekend course.
You control more of the sting than you’d think. A randomized split-scalp study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology tested simple tricks and found two that cut injection pain: an ice pack and a small vibration device held near each site.
A few more things help:
Numbing cream is standard, but more numbing isn’t the whole answer. Technique does the heavy lifting.
No, and the DIY versions trending on social media are a waste of your time.
Real PRP needs a blood draw and a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets. A derma-roller and a serum from a checkout page can’t do that. At best you’re doing plain microneedling. At worst you’re irritating your scalp and inviting infection.
Hair loss is a real problem, and people are right to look for answers. But the space has filled with influencer funnels, gray-market kits, and “trust me, it worked” clips. That’s a trend cycle, not a care plan. A vial and a roller is not a strategy.
PRP also sidesteps a worry that trips up other treatments. It’s made from your own blood, so there’s no question of whether the material is regulated or safe to put in a human body. Formation is a regenerative medicine clinic in Tampa, and for the parts of that work that do use outside material, like stem cells and exosomes, the clinic only uses labs certified under Florida statute, because safety isn’t a corner to cut. Formation also holds SSRP and ISSCA certifications, organizations that certify peptides, exosomes, and stem cells. The regenerative side runs as its own program, separate from the aesthetic surgery side.
If you’re not sure you’re even a good candidate, settle that first.
Recovery is close to a non-event. Expect mild scalp tenderness, maybe slight tightness or swelling, that peaks around 24 to 48 hours and clears in a few days. It feels like a light muscle ache you notice when you brush your hair and then forget.
You can wash your hair the next day. Skip hard workouts, saunas, and alcohol for about 24 hours so you don’t aggravate the area. Because the plasma is your own blood, allergic reactions to it essentially don’t happen. The small risks that do exist, like a bruise or brief numbness, almost always trace back to technique, which loops right back to why the injector matters.
People with heavy thinning often ask whether PRP can regrow bald areas. The honest answer depends on whether those follicles are dormant or already gone, and that’s a consult question.
Your follicles can’t build hair out of nothing. PRP sends the signal, but your body still needs the raw materials: protein, iron, and a few key vitamins. People skip this part, and it quietly drags results down.
Formation built a concierge dietician into the clinic for this reason. Instead of a vague “eat better,” the dietician looks at what you actually eat and closes the gaps that stall hair growth. Pair that with the injections and you give the treatment something to work with. Most clinics treat food as an afterthought. We don’t.
For the right person, yes. A 2024 PubMed meta-analysis found women with thinning hair saw real density and thickness gains from PRP, with a strong safety record. Patient satisfaction in another study averaged about 7.29 out of 10, and roughly 93% of reviewers on RealSelf rate it “worth it.”
Set your expectations, though. PRP is not a cure, and it’s not a transplant. Doctors usually put it after minoxidil and finasteride as an add-on, not a first move, and it isn’t FDA approved for hair (that use is off-label). Results take 3 to 6 months to show, and they fade without maintenance.
PRP works best on early to moderate thinning, where the follicles are weak but still alive. On a fully bald scalp, there’s little left to revive. Results also swing on PRP quality, since centrifuge prep and platelet concentration vary by provider. That’s the real reason a skilled, consistent clinic beats a bargain one. The biggest mistake is finishing a full series under an inexperienced injector, waiting half a year, and growing nothing.
So is PRP for hair painful? A little, for a few minutes, with soreness that fades fast. Against the upside, most people in Tampa decide the pinch is a fair trade. If you want to find out whether it fits your scalp and your goals, see how it stacks up against other hair loss treatments, then call Formation at (813) 922-2920 to book a consult with Jeff.
PRP for hair is mildly uncomfortable, not truly painful. Most people rate it a 2 to 4 on a 10-point scale, with a quick pinch at each of the 100 or more small injections and brief scalp soreness for 24 to 48 hours afterward.
Soreness usually peaks within 24 to 48 hours and clears in two to five days. In one study of people with hair loss, the sting lingered past four hours in only about 25% of patients.
Yes. Topical numbing cream is standard, but technique and tools matter more. A randomized study found that an ice pack and a small vibration device each reduced pain during scalp PRP injections.
Most plans start with three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance every 6 to 12 months. Your exact count depends on your hair loss and goals.
No. Real PRP requires a blood draw and a centrifuge to concentrate platelets, which at-home kits cannot do. DIY versions are usually just microneedling and carry infection risk, so PRP should be done by a trained clinician.
Plan on three to six months before noticeable change, with fuller results closer to a year. Patient satisfaction in one study averaged about 7.29 out of 10, and results improve with consistent sessions and good nutrition.

The power of a profile transformation. 🔥
For this patient, we combined PDO Lifting Threads and advanced chin/jawline filler to completely redefine his lower face. By strategically lifting the mid-to-lower face and sculpting the jaw, we didn’t just enhance one feature—we elevated his entire facial appearance.
An incredible, natural-looking result that brings balance and confidence from every angle.
Note: Minor bunching or puckering is completely normal immediately following a PDO thread lift. The slight bunching visible in the after photo will fully subside on its own over the next 2-4 weeks as the threads settle.
