The incisions from high definition liposuction are small. How you care for them still shapes your comfort and the scars you keep.
So how do I take care of my incisions after HD liposuction? Keep them clean and dry, wear your compression garment as directed, watch for unusual drainage, and leave the dressings in place until your surgeon removes them. Most of these incisions are small enough to close with dissolvable stitches, so they need protection more than active treatment.
I’ve walked hundreds of patients through this stage of recovery. The ones who stick to a simple routine heal faster and scar less. The ones who improvise call us with problems that were avoidable.

HD liposuction leaves more incisions than standard lipo, but each one is smaller. That trade is the whole point.
High definition liposuction sculpts around muscle for a more defined look. That precision means the surgeon works through several small ports instead of one or two. In 2024, surgeons performed close to 350,000 liposuction procedures nationwide, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the high definition version keeps gaining ground in 2026 because high definition liposuction targets detail most standard techniques skip.
More incisions sounds worse. It isn’t. Each opening is usually a few millimeters wide, about the size of a pencil tip. They rarely need stitches you can see, and they heal as small marks that fade over months.
The first week sets the tone. The sites need to stay clean, dry, and covered.
Your incisions come home under a waterproof dressing. Leave it alone. That means no creams, no peroxide, and no picking at the edges. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons outlines standard liposuction recovery steps that match what we tell every patient, from protecting the site to watching for drainage while the body closes the wound on its own.
Some blood-tinged fluid draining for the first 24 to 72 hours is normal. Use a light gauze pad to catch it. Bright red blood soaking through, over and over, is not normal. That one is a call to the office.
Most patients shower about 24 to 48 hours after surgery.
Remove the garment and any foam first. The waterproof dressing can get wet in the shower, so you don’t need to scrub or fuss over the incisions. Pat dry, replace the dressing if instructed, and put the garment back on. Skip baths, hot tubs, and pools until the sites fully close, usually around two weeks.
Your compression garment does more for your incisions than any ointment.
Steady pressure keeps swelling down, which lowers the tension on each incision. Less tension means cleaner healing and thinner scars. Mayo Clinic advises wearing compression for weeks after surgery, and most of my patients stay in a garment for several weeks, often around four to six. Most swelling starts to settle over the first two weeks, and consistent compression is what carries you through that window.
Wear it around the clock. Take it off to shower and to wash it, then put it right back. A garment sitting in a drawer does nothing.
Mild redness, light bruising, and small amounts of drainage in the first few days are all normal.
A 2023 review published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery put major complication rates for liposuction under 5 percent, with one study reporting close to 98 percent patient satisfaction at 12 months. Most people heal without drama. Expect bruising to shift from purple to a yellow-green shade as it clears, usually within two to three weeks.
Numb patches around the incisions surprise a lot of patients. They shouldn’t.
Peer-reviewed liposuction research describes numbness as a temporary sensory change while the small nerves heal. Feeling usually returns over a few months. Tingling as sensation comes back is a good sign, not a problem.
Start scar care once the incisions have closed, not before.
Around two to three weeks in, once the sites are sealed, you can begin a scar routine. Silicone tape or gel works well. Keep the marks out of the sun, since fresh scars darken fast with UV exposure, and stay covered or use sunscreen for several months. Once the incisions close, the same steps that help you manage surgical scars apply to these small sites.
My contrarian take: the old advice that tiny lipo incisions need no care is wrong. They close on their own, yes. But skipping sun protection and scar management is how a mark that should vanish turns into one you notice in the mirror.
Some symptoms mean you call Formation the same day.
Watch for spreading redness, warmth around a site, thick or foul drainage, and a fever over 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Mayo Clinic lists these signs of infection as reasons to reach out. A pocket of fluid that swells up weeks later can be a seroma, which is common and treatable, though it needs a professional to drain it, not you.
Trouble breathing, chest pain, or one leg swelling more than the other is an emergency. Don’t wait on those. Go to the nearest ER.
The fastest way to a bad scar is doing too much, too soon.
A few habits protect your recovery more than any product on the shelf. Skip the early baths and pool days, and keep the garment on even when it’s annoying. Hold off on hard workouts until your surgeon clears you, since strain pulls on healing tissue and can worsen swelling. And don’t cut corners on experience. An inexperienced provider can leave you with contour problems and a second surgery to fix them.
The incisions close within a couple of weeks. The full result takes longer.
Surface healing happens fast, but final HD definition shows up as deep swelling resolves, usually over three to six months. Healthy incisions are the start. How long your liposuction results last depends on steady weight, movement, and the habits you keep after you heal.
