Yes, you can tan after Botox, but not on the same day. Give it 24 to 48 hours first. That short pause protects fresh injections from heat and pressure that can shift the product out of place. The longer-term issue is the sun itself, and most people get that part backward.
Tanning after Botox means any UV exposure, from a tanning bed to a beach chair, in the days right after treatment. You can tan after Botox once 24 to 48 hours have passed. Not sooner. Botox relaxes the muscles that create lines, and it needs a little time to settle into those exact spots. Heat and lying flat too soon can nudge it somewhere you didn’t want it.
So the answer isn’t no. It’s wait, then go.
Most patients assume the sun ruins the product. It doesn’t. The wait is about the first day or two, while your skin recovers from tiny needle sticks.
The real risks happen in that first day, and they have nothing to do with UV rays. They come from heat and body position.
Heat widens your blood vessels, which raises the chance of bruising and swelling where you were injected. A tanning bed also keeps you lying flat and still, and lying down too soon can let the product drift toward muscles you never meant to treat. That’s how a droopy brow happens. Bruising and mild swelling are already the most common side effects of any injection. Piling heat on day one just stacks the odds against you, so skip the sauna and hot tub too.
This is the part almost everyone gets wrong. The sun does not deactivate Botox. You could stand in full Tampa sun a week later and it keeps working.
That doesn’t make the sun harmless. It just plays a longer game. A 2024 study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found people in high-sun climates needed more Botox for the same result. A spray tan is more forgiving, but still wait about 24 hours. The solution won’t hurt your results. The catch is the process: a warm booth, and sometimes rubbing the product onto your face.
Rubbing the treated area is a firm no on day one. It can move the product the same way lying down does. For a summer glow with no UV at all, a spray tan a day or two out is your safest bet. Ask your tech to go easy around your forehead and eyes, and it helps to know how Botox settles first.
