Bruising after a PRP injection is common, and it’s almost always harmless. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. At Formation in Tampa, a regenerative medicine clinic, a provider draws a little of your blood, spins it in a centrifuge, and injects the concentrated part back into your scalp, face, or a sore joint. Any time a needle crosses a small blood vessel, a bit of blood leaks under the skin. That leak is the bruise. Most fade in days to about two weeks, depending on where you got treated. You didn’t do anything wrong, and your results aren’t ruined.
Here’s the short version you can keep in your back pocket.
Bruising after a PRP injection is a small pool of blood that gathers under the skin when the needle nicks a tiny vessel during treatment. It shows up as a blue, purple, or yellow mark near the injection site. For most people it’s mild and clears on its own within a week or so.
This piece won’t argue whether PRP regrows hair or quiets a bad knee. That’s a separate question. This is about the bruise. What’s normal, what’s not, and how to keep it small.
Bruising happens because the needle passes through skin packed with tiny blood vessels. A few of them break, and blood seeps into the tissue around them.
That’s it. No mystery.
PRP comes from your own blood, so there’s no foreign drug sitting under your skin stirring up trouble. Johns Hopkins notes that because the treatment uses your own cells, the risk of an allergic reaction stays low compared with other injectables like steroids. The mark you see isn’t your body rejecting anything. A vessel got nicked, and now it’s patching itself.
I’ll be blunt about a myth I hear most weeks. A bigger bruise does not mean a stronger treatment. It means a vessel sat in the needle’s path that day. Two people can get the same session and walk out looking completely different.
Most bruising after a PRP injection lasts a few days to about two weeks. Studies on PRP for hair report mild bruising or swelling in roughly 10% to 30% of patients, and it usually clears within about a week. The mark shifts color as it heals, from purple or blue to green, then a yellow-brown before it fades. That color change is a good sign. It’s the cleanup crew at work.
You’ll often see the bruise spread a little past the needle site before it goes. That’s plasma and blood diffusing along the tissue. Normal, even if it looks worse than you expected.
The bruise is short-lived. The results side, like how long PRP lasts for hair, runs on a much slower clock measured in months, so don’t judge your outcome by a mark that’s gone in a week.
Normal is dull, boring, and predictable. Worrying is the opposite. Here’s the line.
Normal and expected:
Call your provider if you notice:
The first list is your body doing its job. Serious problems are rare. A 2024 review of PRP found that serious complications are uncommon, with mild, short-lived reactions making up the bulk of what patients report. Still, the second list is the kind of thing you flag early, not after a week of waiting it out.
Where you get treated matters more than almost anything else. Scalp and under-eye PRP bruise visibly because the skin is thin and sits close to surface vessels. Under-eye skin shows everything, and swelling there can take longer to settle. A joint injection rarely leaves a visible mark, though it can feel sore inside for a day or two.
The recipe matters too. Pooled knee-injection data found that leukocyte-rich PRP carried roughly 56% higher odds of swelling and about 64% higher odds of pain reactions than the leukocyte-poor version. Same treatment family, different mix, different reaction. A good provider picks the prep that fits your goal and your skin, not whatever’s loaded in the machine that morning.
You can’t make bruising impossible, but you can stack the odds in your favor. Most of it comes down to a handful of moves.
Now the contrarian piece. Plenty of online guides tell you to pop ibuprofen for soreness. After PRP, I’d push back on that. PRP works by setting off a controlled wave of inflammation, and that’s the exact process anti-inflammatories shut down. Reaching for heavy NSAIDs can work against the treatment you just sat through. Actually, let me sharpen that. One tablet won’t wreck your result. It’s routine ibuprofen during the early window that’s a bad habit for PRP. Ask your provider what’s safe for pain. Many lean on acetaminophen and arnica instead.
Recovery isn’t only about cold packs. Rest, hydration, and good nutrition all help your body support tissue repair while the bruise clears, so treat the days after your session like part of the treatment.
PRP isn’t a fad. The PRP market is growing at roughly 13% a year, according to Grand View Research, pushed by sports medicine, joint care, and aesthetics. Demand is real because people want results without surgery.
But here’s where the marketing oversells. You’ll read “no downtime” on a lot of sites. For facial and scalp PRP, that’s not quite true. Bruising and swelling are common, and pretending otherwise sets you up to panic when a normal mark shows up. Patient satisfaction with PRP runs high, above 90% in some regenerative skin studies, and a big part of that comes from knowing what to expect going in. A clinic that walks you through the bruising honestly is doing you a favor. The same honesty should cover the wider regenerative menu, from peptide therapy to PRP, where managing expectations beats overpromising.
Technique is the difference between a clean session and a face full of bruises. A trained injector knows the map of vessels under the skin and works around them. This is where I get opinionated. The internet has turned regenerative care into a DIY hobby, and that worries me. The blood draw, the spin, the sterile field, the angle of the needle, every step shapes your result and your bruising. Self-experimentation is not the same as supervised care.
At Formation, your PRP injections are done by Jeff Atlas, PA-C, who handles the injections directly. Jeff came from orthopaedics, where injecting around joints, tendons, and tricky anatomy was the daily job. That background means he reads how the body responds and rebuilds, the same tissue healing that clears your bruise, and it shows up as steadier placement and often fewer marks. Dr. Gopal Grandhige, the board-certified general surgeon who owns Formation and specializes in aesthetic surgery, provides medical oversight for the regenerative side of the practice. Your PRP is drawn from your own blood, processed in the clinic, and injected under sterile conditions the same day. Safety isn’t a slogan here, which is why the regenerative program holds SSRP and ISSCA certification, the bodies that set standards for peptides, exosomes, and stem cell work.
There’s a concierge dietitian on staff too. What you eat affects how your skin heals and how fast a bruise clears, so a nutrition plan that backs your recovery is part of the picture, not an afterthought. Formation serves patients in other locations as well, but the main clinic stays in Tampa.
If you’ve got a fresh mark you’re studying in the mirror, or you’re booking your first session and want to know what bruising after a PRP injection will look like for your skin, call the team at (813) 922-2920. A two-minute conversation beats two days of worry.
Yes. Bruising after a PRP injection is normal and expected, especially in thin-skinned areas like the scalp and under the eyes. Because PRP uses your own cells, the risk of an allergic reaction stays low, according to Johns Hopkins. Most bruises fade within a few days to about two weeks.

Stay hydrated, eat before your session, and with your provider's approval pause blood-thinning items like alcohol, fish oil, and high-dose vitamin E for a few days beforehand. A cold compress on the first day and sleeping with your head slightly raised both help. Skip hard workouts and saunas for a day or two.
No. A bigger bruise only means the needle crossed a small vessel that day. It says nothing about how well the treatment will work. Two people can get the identical session and look completely different afterward.

Call your provider if redness spreads instead of shrinking, if you run a fever, if pain worsens after the second day, or if you notice drainage or a bad smell at the site. These signs are rare, but they are worth flagging early rather than waiting it out.

Facial Harmonization Step 2
It takes more than one treatment and often more than one treatment session to accomplish facial harmony and balance.
Here’s a look at step 2 in the journey for our surgical coordinator Hanna.
She wanted to address asymmetry and fullness in the lower face. To accomplish this we’ve started with Botox in the masseter to slim the jaw, and create a more feminine, heart shaped face. Now for step 2 we’re placing PDO lifting threads to enhance definition around the jawline without adding volume.
Stay tuned for step 3 and click the link in our bio to set up a consultation to determine your next steps to achieve your aesthetic goals.

The power of a profile transformation. 🔥
For this patient, we combined PDO Lifting Threads and advanced chin/jawline filler to completely redefine his lower face. By strategically lifting the mid-to-lower face and sculpting the jaw, we didn’t just enhance one feature—we elevated his entire facial appearance.
An incredible, natural-looking result that brings balance and confidence from every angle.
Note: Minor bunching or puckering is completely normal immediately following a PDO thread lift. The slight bunching visible in the after photo will fully subside on its own over the next 2-4 weeks as the threads settle.
