The risk of lasting damage from FaceTite is low, and the reported numbers back that up. But it isn’t zero, and anyone who swears it is has just told you something useful about themselves.
FaceTite is a minimally invasive radiofrequency treatment that heats tissue beneath the skin to tighten it and melt pockets of fat along the lower face and neck. Damage is possible. Documented risks include burns, temporary nerve weakness, firm lumps, and numbness that lingers for months. Most of it traces back to technique and candidate selection, not the device.
I’ve spent over 15 years operating, much of it in burn surgery and critical care, long before I focused on aesthetics. That background changes how I think about heat under someone’s skin. Radiofrequency isn’t magic. It’s a controlled thermal injury. The entire question of whether FaceTite will damage your face comes down to how well that injury is controlled.
Permanent damage from FaceTite is uncommon, and the regulatory record is smaller than most patients expect. A peer-reviewed review published in December 2025 pulled the adverse event reports filed with the FDA for the platform between 2020 and 2025. Across five full years, there were 17 reports total for the combined face and body handpieces. Four involved FaceTite specifically. The reports broke down into 11 burns and 4 cases of neurapraxia, which is temporary nerve weakness. No life-threatening events. No deaths.
For scale, a competing helium plasma tightening device logged 135 adverse event reports over that same window, including 15 life-threatening events.
Now I’ll push back on my own number. Seventeen reports across five years is not a complication rate. Adverse event reporting is voluntary, and I’d bet real money it captures a fraction of what actually happens in offices across the country. A patient with a lumpy neck at six months doesn’t file federal paperwork. She books a revision somewhere else. So read that 17 as evidence that catastrophic outcomes are rare, not as proof that bad outcomes are.
The honest version sits between two lies. Marketing says risk-free. Forums say ruined forever. Neither is right. If you’re weighing radiofrequency skin tightening, you deserve the middle.
FaceTite carries four risks worth understanding before you sign anything. A 2022 systematic review in Annals of Plastic Surgery examined 30 published studies of subsurface radiofrequency and found the most frequent complications were induration and nodules, with prolonged swelling and numbness affecting most patients.
Burns are the risk patients fear most and the one most tied to operator error. Of the 17 federal reports mentioned above, 11 were burns. That’s the single largest category.
Burns happen when surface temperature climbs past what skin tolerates while the operator chases a deeper tightening effect. Early versions of these devices burned people more often. The hardware improved. Judgment didn’t automatically improve with it.
Yes, though it’s usually temporary. Four neurapraxia cases appeared in that same five-year federal record. The nerve at risk is the marginal mandibular branch, which controls part of your lower lip movement. Injure it and one corner of your smile drops.
The anatomy here is unforgiving. That nerve runs just deep to the platysma, the thin sheet of muscle across your neck. Published technique papers are blunt about the rule: keep the internal probe superficial to the platysma. Go below it and you’re in the neighborhood of nerves and salivary glands. This is exactly why neck and jawline tightening demands a different hand than body contouring, where the margin for error is measured in centimeters instead of millimeters.
Most neurapraxia resolves in weeks to a few months. Most is not all.
This is the complication nobody warns you about, and it’s the most common one in the literature. Induration means the tissue heals firm instead of soft. Nodules are palpable lumps under the skin. Both can persist for months.
They happen when heat is delivered unevenly, when scar tissue forms in patches, or when fat is removed in a way that leaves the surface irregular. One series in the 2022 review reported 15 percent of patients unhappy with their result. That’s roughly one in seven.
Most practices quote three to five days back to work, and that’s accurate for social downtime. It’s not the whole picture.
Deep numbness under the chin and jaw commonly lasts weeks. Swelling can take three to six months to fully resolve, which means the face you see at week four is not your result. Patients who weren’t told this call the office at week six convinced something went wrong. Nothing went wrong. They were just undersold the timeline.
The physics explain the risk better than any warning label. Collagen denatures and contracts when tissue reaches roughly 65 degrees Celsius. Published protocols for neck work target that internal temperature while holding the external skin surface near 38 degrees.
Read those two numbers again. The tissue two millimeters below your skin needs to hit 65 degrees for FaceTite to work at all. The skin above it has to stay under 40. There’s your entire safety margin, and it’s maintained by real-time temperature monitoring, probe depth, and how fast the operator moves.
The platform carries FDA device clearance, and that matters less than patients assume. Clearance says a device is substantially equivalent to something already on the market. It doesn’t say the person holding it knows where your marginal mandibular nerve is.
Poor candidate selection causes more disappointing FaceTite results than device malfunction ever will. Some people should walk away, and I tell them so:
There’s a specific mistake I see repeatedly. A patient in her early sixties with real jowl descent gets sold FaceTite because it’s easier to say yes to. She spends her money, waits nine months, sees a modest change, and then needs the surgery she should have had originally. That’s not damage in the clinical sense. It feels like damage to her.
Two providers with identical equipment produce different outcomes. This isn’t marketing. It’s the whole ballgame.
Actually, let me sharpen that framing, because “provider matters” is what everyone says. The specific thing that matters is anatomical judgment under thermal conditions. Knowing when to stop. Recognizing that the tissue in front of you is behaving differently than the last twelve patients and adjusting mid-procedure. Compare how any two people offering FaceTite treatment in Tampa answer that, and the differences show up fast.
Here’s the part of the research most articles skip. That 2022 systematic review found 77 percent of the published studies supporting subsurface radiofrequency came from authors with known financial conflicts. Three quarters of the evidence base was produced by people with a commercial interest in the answer. I still use this technology, and I use it on my own patients, because in the right candidate it works. But I read those studies with a hand on my wallet, and you should know they exist.
I’m not going to cover facelift technique or platysmaplasty here, because those are surgical conversations that deserve their own space. What’s worth saying is where radiofrequency stops.
It won’t correct platysmal banding, those vertical cords that appear when you tense your neck. It won’t rebuild a weak chin or change your jaw angle. It won’t lift descended midface tissue. And it won’t fix a neck where the problem is skin volume rather than skin quality.
When fat is the main issue, combining it with neck liposuction usually beats tightening alone. Remove the fat, tighten what’s left, and the contour holds. Do only one half of that and you get either a hollow that reveals every irregularity or a smooth surface still draped over unwanted bulk.
Risk drops when someone owns the whole arc of care instead of just the appointment. American Society of Plastic Surgeons data puts nonsurgical skin tightening volume at 439,032 procedures in 2024, almost identical to the 438,211 performed in 2023. Volume is flat. The number of providers offering it is not flat. That gap is where patients get hurt.
At Formation, I personally evaluate every face before anything is scheduled. I perform the treatment myself. Surgical cases run in Quad A accredited facilities with the same anesthesia provider and the same staff on every case, because familiarity prevents mistakes. In-office jawline and neck work is done with local anesthesia and oral sedation, which keeps you comfortable without adding unnecessary anesthetic risk.
Recovery gets managed, not assigned. Compression, lymphatic support, protein intake, inflammation control. Sixty percent of your result comes from the procedure. The other forty comes from what happens over the following six months, and I follow patients for a full year.
I also say no. Roughly one in five people who come in asking for facial tightening leave with a different plan, or no plan yet.
So, will FaceTite damage your face? In the right candidate, treated by someone who understands the anatomy and respects the temperature margin, lasting damage is unlikely. Burns and nerve injury exist in the federal record but remain rare. Lumps and long numbness are the realistic concerns, and both are largely a function of technique and honest expectations.
The device didn’t earn its reputation. The people using it did, in both directions.
If you’re in Tampa and weighing this, book a consultation and ask hard questions. Bring the list above. I’d rather spend an hour talking you out of a treatment than nine months apologizing for one.
Thin, crepey skin raises the risk of contour irregularity after FaceTite because fragile tissue responds unpredictably to heat. Radiofrequency works by delivering a controlled thermal injury, and thinner tissue has less margin to absorb it. Anyone with very thin neck skin should ask a surgeon to assess elasticity directly rather than relying on photographs or an online quiz.
Deep numbness under the chin and jaw typically lasts several weeks, and a 2022 systematic review of 30 subsurface radiofrequency studies found prolonged numbness affected most patients. Swelling can take three to six months to fully resolve. The face you see at week four is not the final result.
Permanent nerve injury from FaceTite is rare. Between 2020 and 2025, only four cases of neurapraxia, meaning temporary nerve weakness, appeared in the adverse event reports filed with the FDA for the device platform. The nerve most at risk is the marginal mandibular branch, and injury usually resolves within weeks to a few months. Permanent injury has been reported but remains uncommon.
FaceTite carries a lower risk of visible damage than a facelift because it requires only tiny punctures rather than incisions, so there are no visible scars. It also delivers far less correction. Clinical literature reports roughly 40 percent improvement in skin tightness, which will not match a surgical lift for anyone with advanced laxity.
Usually not, though they can persist for months. Induration, meaning firm tissue, and palpable nodules were the most frequent complications in the 2022 Annals of Plastic Surgery review of subsurface radiofrequency. One series in that review reported 15 percent of patients dissatisfied with their outcome. Massage, time, and structured follow-up resolve most cases.
Prior fillers, energy treatments, or surgery in the treatment area change the tissue planes and existing scar tissue, which affects how heat spreads. This does not automatically rule you out, but it does change the plan. Bring a full history of every treatment and its approximate date to your consultation.
Ask how many cases they performed in the last 12 months, what internal and external temperatures they target, and whether they will show consecutive patient photographs taken at six to twelve months rather than selected ones. It also helps to know that 77 percent of the published studies supporting subsurface radiofrequency came from authors with known financial conflicts, so a provider who cites only manufacturer literature is giving you an incomplete picture.
The last one got 11/10.
Some of the biggest factors affecting liposuction results have nothing to do with what happens in the operating room.
Dr. Gopal rates 13 factors that can influence the final result, from working out before surgery and maintaining a stable weight to compression garments, skin elasticity, and lymphatic massage.
A few of his ratings might surprise you.
For example, he rates skin elasticity a 10/10 because even after the fat is removed, the skin still needs to contract and settle over the new contour.
And lymphatic massage? He gives it an 11/10 because of the role it plays in his recovery protocol, helping manage swelling and supporting how the skin settles over the newly sculpted areas.
The takeaway: great liposuction results depend on more than the surgery itself.
Patient preparation, anatomy, recovery, and long-term weight maintenance all play a role.

Six to seven hours.
That’s how long an HD liposuction procedure can take with Dr. Gopal’s approach.
He’s not simply removing fat. He’s evaluating every square inch, considering the underlying anatomy, and shaping how each contour transitions into the next.
It’s detailed, physically demanding work.
So when Dr. Gopal says, “Someone’s gotta sweat for the fat to come off,” he means it.

Will neck lipo give you the jawline you want?
It depends…
Someone can have fullness under the chin and assume the answer is neck liposuction. But what looks like “fat” from the outside can actually come from several different structures.
Some fat sits directly beneath the skin and can respond very well to liposuction.
But fullness can also come from deeper fat beneath the platysma, the salivary glands under the jaw, muscles under the chin, or even the natural projection of the chin and jaw itself.
That distinction can completely change what neck liposuction can realistically accomplish.
This is why evaluating the anatomy matters before deciding on a procedure.
For the right anatomy, neck liposuction can create a significant change in the neck and jawline.
But when deeper structures are contributing to the fullness, liposuction alone may not create the contour someone is expecting.
A good neck lipo consultation should figure that out first.

Want more definition than workouts gave you?
Traditional liposuction focuses primarily on removing fat. HD liposuction goes further. It requires understanding the underlying muscle anatomy, where to remove fat, where to preserve it, and how each contour works together to create natural-looking definition.
That’s the art of it. The goal isn’t to give every patient the same abs or the same body. It’s to work with the anatomy that’s already there and determine how much definition will look right for that individual.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige specializes in high-definition liposuction and advanced body contouring, using nearly two decades of surgical experience to create results that look sculpted, athletic, and intentional.

Defined abs with HD liposuction.
Unlike traditional liposuction, where the primary goal is removing excess fat, HD liposuction is about strategically removing fat to reveal and enhance the underlying muscle structure.
Those markings you see before surgery help Dr. Gopal map out the patient’s anatomy and plan where to remove fat and where to preserve it to create more visible definition.
The second clip was taken immediately after surgery, so this is not the final result. Swelling and bruising will change significantly as the body heals and the final contour develops over the months that follow.

Skin quality changes everything.
Neck liposuction can create a more defined jawline and neck contour by removing unwanted fat, but the result also depends heavily on skin quality and elasticity.
When skin has good elasticity, neck lipo alone may be enough for the skin to contract around the new contour. With some skin laxity, Dr. Gopal may combine liposuction with a skin-tightening treatment such as Renuvion or FaceTite. With significant laxity, a neck lift may be the more appropriate option.
That’s why evaluating the skin is an important part of determining the right approach before neck liposuction.

Liposuction can change more than the body.
I’ve watched patients become more confident, make changes in their careers, show up differently in their relationships, and start making different choices for themselves.
That’s when I know I’ve done my job well.
Because high-definition liposuction isn’t only about creating a leaner, more defined physique. Sometimes the physical transformation becomes the catalyst for changes that reach far beyond the operating room.

Male liposuction requires a different approach.
The contours that create a more feminine shape aren’t necessarily the same ones that create a strong, athletic male physique.
With male high-definition liposuction, Dr. Gopal considers how the chest, abdomen, waist, ribs and back work together—and how the underlying muscle anatomy should guide where definition and shadow are created.
That’s also why the chest matters. A highly defined abdomen and back paired with a rounder, less-defined chest can make the overall result feel out of proportion.
The goal is a cohesive, athletic contour that works with the patient’s natural anatomy.

6 months post high-definition liposuction with moderate definition.
The goal wasn’t just less fat. It was a leaner, more athletic contour with visible definition through the abdomen and torso, without pushing the result to the highest level of definition.
High-definition liposuction strategically sculpts around the underlying anatomy and can be customized based on a patient’s anatomy, muscle structure, and the degree of definition they want to achieve.
For this patient, moderate definition created the balance Dr. Gopal was looking for.
Results vary by patient and depend on individual anatomy, skin quality, and treatment plan.
