Should you remove the turkey neck? If your main problem is loose skin and slack muscle, surgery is the only thing that fixes it for good. I’ll be blunt with patients in consultation. Creams, rollers, and neck workouts won’t tighten skin that has already lost its spring. A neck lift takes out the extra skin, trims fat, and tightens the muscle underneath. That’s what gives you a clean jawline again.
Milder cases have lighter options, and I’ll cover those too. But if you want the sag gone for years, not months, you’re looking at a procedure, not a product. This isn’t a piece about lifting the whole face. For patients who need that, full facial plastic surgery is a separate conversation. Here we’re staying on the neck.
Turkey neck is loose, sagging skin and soft tissue under the chin and along the front of the neck.
Turkey neck is the hanging skin and slack muscle that form below the jaw. It happens when skin loses elasticity, fat shifts, and the neck muscle weakens with age or weight loss. The result is a soft, drooping neckline and a jaw that no longer looks sharp.
The platysma is the flat sheet of muscle across the front of your neck. When its edges loosen, you get those two vertical cords people notice in the mirror. Add thinning skin and a little extra fat, and the smooth line between chin and neck fades. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is clear that once skin has stretched out, only a surgical procedure restores that line.
Aging is the usual cause. Fast weight loss now runs a close second.
Your skin makes less collagen every year. Gravity pulls. Sun damage speeds it all up. That slow loss of firmness is why most necks start to droop in the 50s and 60s.
Weight loss drugs changed the picture. When people drop weight quickly on the newer GLP-1 medications, the skin doesn’t shrink to match. I’m seeing turkey neck in patients in their 30s and 40s now, faces I never would have expected a decade ago.
Sometimes the issue is mostly fat that settles under the chin, which we treat with neck liposuction instead of a full lift. Skin quality is what decides which one you need.
Yes, if you have real skin and muscle sagging. A neck lift, which surgeons call a lower rhytidectomy, is the fix that holds. It removes loose skin, tightens the platysma, and gives back a defined jaw. Results last seven to ten years or more. On RealSelf, patients give the procedure a 91 percent “Worth It” rating, which is high for any surgery.

When the problem is fat plus mild looseness, we can tighten and remove fat in one shorter procedure. Not every neck needs the full operation.
Plan on about one to two weeks before you feel ready to be seen. Swelling, tightness, and numbness can linger for weeks, sometimes a few months. The final result settles between six and twelve months.
This is where people get caught off guard. They budget a week and expect to look finished. Recovery is slower than the before-and-after photos suggest, and the tightness feels strange at first. Knowing that going in makes the whole thing easier.
Noninvasive options help mild cases and buy time. They can’t remove skin.
The “nonsurgical neck lift” is oversold, and I’ll say so plainly. I used to send nearly every mild case to devices first. Actually, that framing wasn’t quite right. Pointing someone with real sagging toward a machine just wastes months chasing the wrong fix.
For genuinely mild looseness, radiofrequency skin tightening like FaceTite can firm things up with less downtime. A thread lift gives a small lift that fades in a year or two. Muscle-relaxing injections soften the vertical cords, and filler can smooth creases. Jeff Atlas, PA-C handles those injections in the office, so your injector isn’t the surgeon.
The real trade-off is time. These results run about one to two years. Surgery runs seven to ten or more. If your skin has already given out, no device will change that math.
The biggest mistake in this whole space is picking an unqualified provider and needing a second surgery to fix the first.
Neck lifts aren’t rare. ASPS reports surgeons performed 22,000 neck lifts in a single year, up about 2 percent, plus roughly 24,000 chin and neck liposuction cases. Popularity is not the same as easy, though. This is a detailed operation, and the person holding the scalpel matters more than anything else.
Ask three things: what’s your plan for the deep muscle and fat, can I see neck results from patients like me, and what’s your revision rate? A good answer sounds specific. A vague one is a warning.

ย Neck liposuction only removes fat under the chin and neck. A full neck lift removes fat, tightens the muscle, and trims loose skin. Liposuction alone works best for younger patients with good skin elasticity and no real sagging.
ย If you have loose skin and muscle bands, this is often a good time. Neck lifts carry a 91 percent "Worth It" rating from patients on RealSelf, and earlier treatment can mean a lighter procedure than waiting another decade.
ย For moderate to severe sagging, no. Creams sit on the surface and cannot tighten muscle, and exercises will not remove excess skin. They may make skin feel a little smoother, but they will not rebuild a defined neckline.
