PDO thread the way a solvent would. But lab research shows that non-crosslinked HA, sitting in direct contact with a PDO thread, speeds up how fast the thread breaks down. So the honest answer to whether hyaluronic acid dissolves PDO threads is that it can accelerate the natural breakdown, not trigger some instant meltdown.
I’ll say where I land up front, because a lot of clinics dodge this. If you’re getting threads and fillers in the same area, product type and timing change the outcome. Done right, the two support each other. Done carelessly, you can shorten the life of threads you just paid for.
Not the way most people picture it. PDO threads are made of polydioxanone, a material your body absorbs through hydrolysis over several months. HA doesn’t dissolve that material on contact. What it does, based on lab evidence, is act as a catalyst that makes hydrolysis run faster when the two press directly against each other.
It’s less like acid eating metal and more like bread going stale in humid air. The bread was always going to go stale. Moisture just gets it there quicker. PDO loves water, and HA holds a lot of it. Put them in direct contact and the thread takes on water and comes apart sooner.
What people are really asking is how long results hold once you add a filler on top. The thread’s lifespan is only one piece of that, and it’s rarely the piece that decides how your face looks at month six.
Left alone, a PDO thread dissolves in about four to six months. The lifting effect fades first. The collagen your body builds around the thread lasts longer, often 12 to 18 months, and that collagen is the real point of the treatment.
Several things move that timeline. Thicker threads last longer than thin ones. Threads in high-movement zones, like around the mouth, break down faster. Younger patients with quicker metabolisms clear them sooner. Smoking and heavy drinking speed things up too.
Clinics gloss over one point. The thread was never the prize. The collagen is. So if something shortens the thread’s life, what you actually care about is whether it lasted long enough to do its collagen work. In my experience that window falls in the first six to eight weeks. The same longevity questions come up with non-surgical jawline contouring, where results also ride on how your body responds over months.
The evidence people quote comes from a 2019 study in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery. Researchers submerged PDO thread segments in non-crosslinked HA and watched them under a microscope. The fibers began to fray within 24 hours. Gaps widened between the polymer layers, pigment leached out, and by 72 hours the center of the thread had hollowed. The authors even suggested HA could be used on purpose to speed a thread’s breakdown when one sits too superficially, which tells you the effect is real, just controllable.
A later study pushed this further, testing HA at six concentrations from 5 to 25 mg/mL over about two weeks. Higher concentration and longer contact meant more breakdown.
One caveat, and it’s a big one. These were test tubes, not faces. In vitro results don’t map cleanly onto living tissue, where threads and filler often sit in separate layers and never touch. That gap between lab and clinic is exactly why the “HA destroys your threads” panic online is overblown.
This is where the online fear falls apart. The lab studies used non-crosslinked HA, the thin, loosely bound kind. Most dermal fillers are crosslinked, meaning the HA molecules are chemically bonded into a gel that resists breakdown. That structure behaves differently against a thread.
Non-crosslinked HA is the runnier version used in skin boosters and some hydration treatments. A 2025 in vitro study testing several non-crosslinked solutions saw the same accelerated breakdown pattern. If you’re getting a standard volumizing filler, though, you’re likely dealing with crosslinked product, which is a different situation.
I won’t pretend the line is perfectly clean. We don’t yet have strong human data separating the two by outcome. But treating every form of HA as thread-killing kryptonite ignores what the research actually tested.
Yes, and clinics do it all the time. The pairing is popular for a reason. Threads lift and stimulate collagen while filler restores lost volume, so you get structure and fullness together. A 2025 clinical trial that combined crosslinked filler with barbed PDO threads for mid-face contouring held up over two years without added complications. That trial tracked patients aged 29 to 70 and measured real reductions in mid-face and lower-face width, not just how people felt about the mirror.
Safety lives in the execution. Threads and filler should go in different tissue planes, not stacked on each other. Timing helps too. Some injectors place threads first, let them settle, then add filler at a later visit instead of flooding the same pocket on day one. The goal is balance, the same principle behind avoiding an overdone look after any cosmetic work.
This is also where provider skill stops being a buzzword and becomes the whole game. A meta-analysis put thread lift complication rates at bruising around 26%, swelling near 16%, and dimpling or asymmetry close to 7%. Most of that traces to technique, not the product. Ask any injector how many they’ve done and how they handle asymmetry. If they get cagey, walk.
Here’s a point that trips up patients and even some providers. Hyaluronidase is the enzyme used to dissolve HA filler when something goes wrong. It breaks down hyaluronic acid. It does not directly dissolve polydioxanone.
So if a thread sits too close to the surface and you can see or feel it, hyaluronidase isn’t the fix for the thread itself. Some clinicians do use HA (the material, not the enzyme) to speed thread breakdown in complication cases, which loops back to that 2019 finding. But hyaluronidase and hyaluronic acid do opposite jobs, and mixing them up leads to bad calls. If a provider reaches for hyaluronidase to correct a visible thread, that’s a sign they’ve confused the two, and a fair reason to get a second opinion. Most patients see the lifting effect for four to six months, with collagen benefits stretching to a year or more. The best candidates tend to have mild to moderate sagging and skin that still has some bounce to it. If your skin has lost a lot of elasticity, threads alone usually underdeliver, and that’s when energy-based skin tightening or a surgical option makes more sense.
The demand skews heavily female. A 2025 review of nearly 112,000 facial thread lifts found roughly 91% of patients were women, and satisfaction sits around 75% on patient review platforms. Decent, not universal. The people who regret it usually expected a facelift result from a non-surgical treatment. It isn’t one, and any honest provider will say so before you book.
So, does hyaluronic acid dissolve PDO threads? It can speed up how fast they break down, but the scary version of that claim collapses once you separate lab conditions from real treatment.
If you want both threads and filler, the answer isn’t to skip one. It’s to work with someone who plans the layering and timing on purpose. That’s the line between two treatments that reinforce each other and two that fight. In my consultations I map where each product goes and space the visits when the anatomy calls for it, because a rushed same-day combination is where most avoidable problems start.
