A PRP facial for acne uses your own blood to fade acne scars and smooth rough skin. It won’t clear an active breakout. That’s the first thing patients need to hear, and most have it backward.
The process is simple. We draw a small amount of your blood, spin it down to concentrate the platelets, then return that platelet-rich plasma to your skin during microneedling. The platelets carry growth factors, the signals that tell your skin to build new collagen. Collagen is what fills in scars over time.
So a PRP facial is a repair tool for the marks acne leaves behind, not a way to stop pimples. Used right, after the acne itself is under control, it can soften scarring that creams never reach. Used wrong, it’s a painful way to irritate already angry skin.
A PRP facial for acne is a microneedling treatment that uses platelet-rich plasma from your own blood to repair acne scars and improve skin texture. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma.
A PRP facial for acne is a minimally invasive skin treatment. A provider draws a small amount of your blood, concentrates the platelets in a centrifuge, then works that plasma into your skin with microneedling. The platelets release growth factors that prompt new collagen, which gradually softens acne scars and evens out texture.
People call it a facial, which makes it sound like a spa add-on. That framing isn’t right. It’s a medical procedure that draws blood and breaks your skin barrier, so it belongs in a clinical setting.
Acne is the most common skin condition in the country. The American Academy of Dermatology reports it affects up to 50 million Americans a year, and a large share are left with scars once the breakouts stop. That gap is what a PRP facial tries to fill. At Formation, a regenerative medicine clinic in Tampa, PRP sits on the regenerative side of the practice, not the surgical side.
PRP works on acne scars by feeding your skin a concentrated dose of its own repair signals. Scarring is a collagen problem. Acne injures the skin, the healing comes back uneven, and you’re left with pits, rolling dips, or raised marks.
Microneedling creates hundreds of tiny channels across the surface. That controlled injury switches on your skin’s repair response. Add PRP, and you push platelets straight into those channels. A Mayo Clinic study on facial PRP describes a concentrate with four to seven times the platelets of normal blood, so the plasma delivers a heavy load of growth factors. Those signals tell skin cells to lay down fresh collagen.
New collagen fills scars from underneath. The surface smooths out over a few weeks, not overnight. This is slow, steady work.
No. A PRP facial does not clear active acne, and any provider who pitches it that way is selling you something.
This is where I push back on the marketing. PRP is a repair treatment. Active acne is inflammation and clogged pores driven by oil, bacteria, and hormones. Needling skin in the middle of a breakout can spread bacteria and make things worse.
Get the acne under control first. That usually means a real acne plan. The right topicals, sometimes oral medication, sometimes a hormonal treatment. Once your skin is calm and the breakouts have stopped, scars become the target. That’s the right time for PRP.
Treating active acne is its own topic, and a medical one. This guide stays on scars. We won’t book a PRP facial for someone with active, inflamed acne. When the timing is right, it joins our other PRP and peptide treatments on the regenerative side.
The research on PRP for acne scars is promising but not settled. The strongest results show up when PRP is paired with microneedling or a fractional laser, not when it’s used alone.
PRP has been studied alongside microneedling and laser for scar repair, and trials that compare the combination against microneedling on its own tend to report smoother scars and more satisfied patients. One randomized study split patients into three groups. One got microneedling only, one got PRP injections only, and one got both. Skin samples taken after PRP showed thicker collagen and a thicker outer skin layer.
A few honest caveats. The studies are small, and recent evidence reviews rate the certainty as low to moderate. PRP preps aren’t standardized across clinics, so results swing with the equipment and the hands doing the work. The FDA clears microneedling devices for acne scars, but it hasn’t approved PRP itself for the face, so a PRP facial is an off-label use of your own blood. Anyone promising a fixed percentage of scar improvement is guessing.
At Formation, a PRP facial is a medical procedure from start to finish, run by trained clinical staff in Tampa. A session runs like this:
The needling and injections are done by Jeff Atlas, PA-C. He came to Formation from orthopaedics, where PRP has been used on joints and tendons for years, and he brings that hands-on experience to every session. Patients sometimes assume the clinic owner runs every procedure. He doesn’t. Dr. Gopal Grandhige, a board-certified general surgeon, founded the clinic and leads consultations, but the hands-on PRP work is Jeff’s.
One question patients almost never ask is what PRP protocol and platelet concentration a clinic uses. Good providers have a clear answer.
PRP also stands apart from a lot of trending treatments because it comes from you. There’s no outside product and no vial ordered off the internet. What’s left is the setting. PRP draws blood and breaks the skin barrier, so sterile technique and a licensed space are what keep you safe. Formation holds SSRP certification and ISSCA certification, organizations that certify peptides, exosomes, and stem cells, and the main clinic is in Tampa, though the practice offers services in other locations too.
Most people need a series of three to six PRP sessions for acne scars, spaced about four to eight weeks apart. One session won’t do it. That’s the honest answer, even if it’s not the one you’re hoping for.
Picture rolling scars across both cheeks after years of breakouts. A single treatment might give you a little glow and slightly smoother skin for a few weeks. The real change, scars filling in, comes from repeated rounds that keep prompting collagen over months.
Spacing matters because collagen builds slowly. Your skin needs weeks between sessions to do the work. Results can hold for a year or more, and some patients come back once or twice a year to maintain them.
PRP is one tool on the regenerative side of the practice, the same place our peptide protocols live. It isn’t a magic fix, and we don’t sell it as one.
Recovery from a PRP facial is short. Expect redness and mild swelling for one to three days, a bit like a sunburn, sometimes with light flaking. Because the plasma is your own, allergic reactions are rare.
The real risk isn’t the treatment. It’s where you get it.
This part should stop you cold. In 2024, the CDC traced a small cluster of HIV infections to vampire facials performed at an unlicensed New Mexico spa. Investigators identified four former clients, plus one client’s partner, diagnosed with HIV between 2018 and 2023. It was the first documented case of HIV spreading through a cosmetic injection. The spa had reused equipment meant for single use, and the owner later pleaded guilty to practicing medicine without a license.
PRP involves your blood and needles. In clean, licensed hands, that’s routine and safe. In a back room with reused needles, it’s a way to catch a bloodborne disease. Skip the at-home microneedling kits and the unlicensed pop-up spas. This isn’t a treatment to cut corners on.
A PRP facial improves your skin, but it doesn’t carry the whole result on its own. The procedure fine-tunes your healing. The daily inputs, sleep, sun protection, diet, and skincare, do most of the work.
Your body repairs scars through several systems at once. Push only one and the others lag, and the result comes up short. So we don’t treat PRP as a standalone. We pair it with the basics that feed the same repair process.
Diet is the piece people skip. What you eat affects both acne and how well your skin heals. Formation keeps a concierge dietitian on staff who works with patients directly, because nutrition that supports collagen and steady blood sugar gives PRP more to build on. Daily sunscreen counts too, since UV breaks down the very collagen you’re working to build.
A PRP facial for acne is worth it if you have acne scars, your breakouts are under control, and you’re realistic about the timeline. For active acne, it’s the wrong call.
I’d put it plainly. PRP isn’t hype, and it isn’t a miracle. It’s a solid, evidence-backed way to soften scarring for the right person in the right place. The people who regret it are the ones who expected one session to erase years of damage, or who chased a shortcut somewhere unsafe.
If acne scars are what’s bothering you, the smartest first move isn’t booking a PRP facial for acne. It’s a real consultation, where someone looks at your skin and tells you honestly whether PRP fits your scars or whether something else would serve you better. You can schedule a consultation or call Formation in Tampa at (813) 922-2920 to start there.
A PRP facial for acne is a microneedling treatment that uses platelet-rich plasma from your own blood to repair acne scars and improve skin texture. A provider draws a small blood sample, concentrates the platelets, and works that plasma into your skin. It targets the scars acne leaves behind, not active breakouts.
A PRP facial softens acne scars gradually rather than erasing them. The growth factors in PRP prompt new collagen, which fills scars from underneath over several weeks. Most people see the best change after a series of three to six sessions.
No. A PRP facial is a repair treatment, not an acne medication. Needling skin during an active breakout can spread bacteria and worsen it. Get your breakouts under control first, then use PRP to address the scarring.
Most people need three to six sessions, spaced about four to eight weeks apart, because collagen builds slowly. One session won't deliver structural change. Results can hold for a year or more with occasional maintenance.
A PRP facial is safe in a licensed clinical setting, since the plasma comes from your own blood and rarely causes allergic reactions. The real risk is an unsafe location. In 2024, the CDC linked HIV infections to vampire facials at an unlicensed New Mexico spa that reused equipment, which is why setting and sterile technique matter so much.
Not for cosmetic facial use. The FDA clears microneedling devices for acne scars, but it hasn't approved PRP itself for delivery into the face, so a PRP facial is an off-label procedure that uses your own blood. That is one more reason a licensed, experienced provider matters.
Downtime is short. Expect redness and mild swelling for one to three days, sometimes with light flaking, similar to a mild sunburn. Most people return to normal activities the next day.

Facial Harmonization Step 2
It takes more than one treatment and often more than one treatment session to accomplish facial harmony and balance.
Here’s a look at step 2 in the journey for our surgical coordinator Hanna.
She wanted to address asymmetry and fullness in the lower face. To accomplish this we’ve started with Botox in the masseter to slim the jaw, and create a more feminine, heart shaped face. Now for step 2 we’re placing PDO lifting threads to enhance definition around the jawline without adding volume.
Stay tuned for step 3 and click the link in our bio to set up a consultation to determine your next steps to achieve your aesthetic goals.

The power of a profile transformation. 🔥
For this patient, we combined PDO Lifting Threads and advanced chin/jawline filler to completely redefine his lower face. By strategically lifting the mid-to-lower face and sculpting the jaw, we didn’t just enhance one feature—we elevated his entire facial appearance.
An incredible, natural-looking result that brings balance and confidence from every angle.
Note: Minor bunching or puckering is completely normal immediately following a PDO thread lift. The slight bunching visible in the after photo will fully subside on its own over the next 2-4 weeks as the threads settle.
