Most people need jawline filler touch-ups every 12 to 18 months. That’s the short version. The longer version depends on which filler you got, how much you started with, and how fast your own body breaks it down.
I’ve injected and tracked jawlines for years, and I tell every patient the same thing. Jawline filler is maintenance, not a one-time fix.
A jawline filler touch-up is a smaller follow-up visit where a provider adds a bit of product to a jaw or chin that has started to soften. It refreshes the definition from your first treatment, usually before the shape fades completely, so you keep a clean line instead of starting over. These results aren’t permanent, so the shape fades and needs topping up.
For most jawlines, plan on a touch-up somewhere between the one-year and eighteen-month mark. Good filler, placed well, should hold its shape that long before it needs a refresh.
The exact number depends on the filler. The common options behave differently on the jaw and chin:
Chin filler and the jaw angle don’t always fade at the same rate, either. The chin can hold a little longer because it moves less than the area near the muscle you use to chew. Two more things stretch or shrink that range. Filler fades because these gels are gradually absorbed by your body, so anything that speeds up your metabolism shortens the clock. And the first round often settles a little in the first couple of weeks, which is normal.
I want to push back on something the industry repeats. You’ll see claims that jaw filler lasts two years, period. Sometimes it does. In the real world, 9 to 18 months is far more common, and plenty of patients notice softening before the one-year mark. The product can still be sitting there while the crisp edge you loved is already gone.
Three things move the timeline more than anything else: the filler, the amount, and your metabolism. Big weight swings matter too. Drop a lot of weight fast, say on a GLP-1 medication, and your face changes shape, so filler can look different or fade quicker. Sun, stress, and how active you are all chip away at it. Some patients are even surprised that the right placement can slim your face instead of bulking it up.
Yes, and more than most people expect. Cleveland Clinic notes that hyaluronic acid fillers usually last about six months to a year. Firm filler placed deep on the jaw runs longer than that, but a fast metabolism trims months off either way. If you’re young, lean, and active, your body clears the gel quicker, and hard cardio seems to speed it up too.
Volume changes the math. A jaw built with three or four syringes holds its shape longer than one touched up with half a syringe. There’s a flip side, though. Stacking too much over the years can leave the lower face looking heavy or wide, which is its own problem. More product isn’t the goal. A clean, proportional line is.
Not all jaw filler behaves the same. Firm, structural hyaluronic acid sits deep on the bone and resists movement, so it outlasts soft, flexible filler. Collagen-stimulating products work on a different timeline. They nudge your body to build its own collagen, and that effect can carry past two years.
You don’t need a calendar to know. Your face will tell you first. Watch for these:
Most people feel it before they see it on paper. Friends might notice before you do, especially in side-profile shots. If you’re squinting at old pictures wondering where your edge went, you’re due for a touch-up.
Usually just a touch-up, and that’s the good news. If you come back on schedule, a provider tops up the spots that have softened with a small amount of product. You’re maintaining a base, not rebuilding it.
Actually, that’s not the whole story. If you wait two or three years and let everything dissolve, the touch-up turns back into a full jawline filler treatment. The longer you stretch it, the more product you’ll need to get back to where you were. Coming in a little early usually means less product and a more natural result.
A little, yes. You can’t stop your body from absorbing filler, but you can avoid speeding it up. A few habits help:

I’ve fixed plenty of jaws where filler was placed too shallow or in the wrong spot, then migrated down into the lower face and blurred the very line it was meant to sharpen. Once that happens, you have to dissolve it before you can start over.
The downsides of jawline fillers almost always trace back to technique, not the product. A trained injector places firm filler deep, on the bone, where it holds and lasts.
