Plastic surgery reviews are partly reliable, and “partly” does heavy lifting there. Reviews capture how patients felt about their care. They do a poor job proving whether a surgeon operates well. The platforms hosting them also profit from the doctors being rated, which shapes what you see before you read a single word.
I’ve read thousands of reviews across Tampa practices, and the pattern holds everywhere. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons counted nearly 1.6 million cosmetic surgical procedures in 2024, and most of those patients started with a search bar and a star rating.
Plastic surgery reviews are patient-written ratings posted on platforms like Google, Yelp, RealSelf, and Healthgrades. They reliably capture bedside manner, staff communication, and recovery support. They are far less reliable as proof of surgical skill, since platforms filter content, doctors can advertise for visibility, and fake reviews still slip through.
One thing this article won’t do: rank every review site on the internet. Most recycle the same handful of opinions.
Most patients hunting for recommended plastic surgeons start with Google, then a specialty site like RealSelf. Each platform plays by its own rules.
Anyone can post. Neither platform verifies that a reviewer was ever a patient. Both attach real names, which cuts the other way too. Plenty of happy cosmetic patients stay silent because they don’t want a breast procedure tied to their Gmail account. The result is a thinner sample than you’d expect from a busy practice.
Yelp filters reviews through software, and the hidden ones are often positive. Courts have upheld its right to do this. A practice with glowing patient feedback can still look mediocre on Yelp. I’d weigh it the least of the major platforms.
RealSelf covers aesthetics only, and it confirms reviewers are real patients, so people can post under pseudonyms and speak freely. The catch? Doctors can advertise for greater visibility, and the scores skew rosy.
These sites cover healthcare broadly, not aesthetics specifically. Posting is anonymous, and you’ll find more insurance-based doctors here, including those who perform reconstructive plastic surgery. Useful for background. Thin on detail about cosmetic results.
Every major review platform sells visibility to the same doctors it rates.
The numbers show the distortion. RealSelf “Worth It” ratings run 93 to 96 percent for popular procedures, while peer-reviewed studies put overall patient satisfaction closer to 76.8 percent. The gap is the platform effect.
Regulators noticed. In August 2024, the FTC finalized a rule banning fake reviews, and it sent its first warning letters to ten companies in December 2025. Good news, but enforcement is young. Assume some of what you read was planted, traded for perks, or written by someone’s cousin.
And the industry’s favorite advice, “just read the reviews,” misses the bigger problem. Star ratings measure friendliness, phone manners, and waiting rooms. None of that tells you how a surgeon handles a complication.
Read for patterns, not ratings. A single five-star or one-star review is noise. Twenty reviews mentioning the same strength or the same complaint? Signal.
Work through reviews in this order:
One correction to the standard advice. “Read more reviews” isn’t quite right. Read fewer reviews, more carefully, and spend the saved time on credentials and before-and-after photos. That trade wins every time.
Reviews narrow your list. A consultation makes the decision.

Cross-check every profile with board certification records.
Use the ABMS certification lookup or the ASPS surgeon directory. Both are free and take under five minutes. Board certification confirms years of supervised surgical training, something no star rating can measure.
Review volume tracks practice type, not skill. Cosmetic practices collect reviews on Google and Yelp, while reconstructive and insurance-based surgeons often have almost none. Privacy plays a role too, since many patients won't attach their name to a cosmetic procedure.
Sometimes a real problem, sometimes nothing. One-star reviews can come from ex-employees, competitors, or reputation firms drumming up business. Look for detailed, repeated complaints about results or aftercare across multiple reviewers before you treat criticism as a pattern.
Around 20 recent reviews per practice is enough to spot patterns. With nearly 1.6 million cosmetic surgeries performed in 2024 per ASPS, there's no shortage of patient feedback. Spend the rest of your research time on credentials and before-and-after photos.
