The biggest red flags plastic surgeon shoppers should look for are missing ABPS board certification, no hospital privileges, guaranteed-results talk, suspicious five-star reviews, discount coupons on surgery, rushed consultations, and refusal to show real before-and-after photos. Spot two, and you walk. I’ve watched patients ignore one warning sign because they liked the office decor, then spend two years and a second procedure fixing what went wrong. This isn’t paranoia. It’s pattern recognition.
The U.S. ran roughly 1.59 million cosmetic surgical procedures in 2024, according to the ASPS 2024 statistics report released last June. That’s a lot of room for unqualified providers to hide. Florida and Texas log some of the highest volumes for body work, which means more places where corners get cut. Tampa is no exception.
This piece won’t cover procedure techniques or recovery timelines. It’s about the vetting, before you sign anything.
A medical degree isn’t enough. “Board-certified” isn’t either, until you check which board. The American Board of Plastic Surgery requires six years of specialized residency after medical school. Some cosmetic boards require a weekend course and a check. Both can legally use the words “board certified” in marketing.
Run the name through ABMS.org. The American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes only specific certifications, and that list is what matters. If your prospective surgeon doesn’t show up there for plastic surgery specifically, ask why. Your OB-GYN should not be doing your tummy tuck. A dermatologist should not be doing your facelift. I’ve seen revisions on both, and they’re costly in money and downtime.

Surgery has limits. Bone structure has limits. Skin elasticity has limits. Anyone who tells you otherwise is inexperienced or selling.
The classic version is the surgeon who insists you only need a breast augmentation when you actually need a lift. The bigger implant creates a short-term illusion that gravity erases over a year or two. Then you’re paying for a revision. Experienced surgeons tell patients what surgery can’t fix. That honesty is the green flag.
I’ll push back on the industry habit of promising “natural results” without defining what that means for a specific anatomy. Natural for whom? Ask for specifics, not slogans.
Hospital privileges aren’t a status symbol. They’re a third-party check on competence. Hospitals don’t grant them lightly, and they pull them fast when something goes wrong.
If a surgeon operates only in their own office and has no local hospital privileges, ask why. Sometimes the answer is fine, because the surgeon has chosen an accredited center with proper AAAHC accreditation. Sometimes it isn’t. Several recent cosmetic surgery mortalities happened in non-accredited office settings, especially for body work like high-volume liposuction and BBLs. Facility accreditation plus board-certified anesthesia is the floor. Not the ceiling.
Hair salons run coupons. Surgeons shouldn’t.
A surgeon offering a Groupon, a holiday discount, or a “book today and save” deal is telling you what their priority is. They need volume. Volume incentives push surgeons toward shorter cases, fewer revisions, and patients they shouldn’t be operating on at all. Aggressive discounting also correlates with non-accredited facilities and rushed consultations.
My contrarian take. Financing is fine. Payment plans are fine. Cutting the surgical fee itself to chase patients is the warning sign.
A consultation is a two-way interview. If the surgeon spends most of it talking up packages and add-ons, that’s a sales call. A real consultation includes a full medical history, questions about current medications (including GLP-1 weight loss drugs, which most surgeons want paused weeks before surgery), and a clear discussion of what surgery can and can’t do for your case. For body contouring procedures especially, the anatomy-specific conversation matters because two patients with similar builds can have very different skin elasticity.
Three questions to ask:
Filtered photos, ring-light angles, and selectively cropped shots aren’t evidence. Real before-and-afters show the same angle, the same lighting, and the scars at multiple healing stages.
A surgeon who refuses to show photos, or only has a tight curated gallery, is hiding something. Push for cases that match your body type, your skin tone, and your age. Actually, scratch the age. Anatomy match matters more for most procedures. I’ve seen patients in their 50s heal better than patients in their 30s because of skin quality, not chronology. The top-rated plastic surgeons in Tampa tend to keep extensive photo galleries because they have nothing to hide.
The procedure is half the decision. The post-op plan is the other half.
Ask who handles your follow-ups, who you call at 2 a.m. when something hurts, and what the revision policy looks like if you’re not happy with the result. The clinics with the worst outcomes tend to disappear after surgery. The ones worth your money treat the year after the procedure as part of the work.
If you’re looking at facial work, body contouring, or any aesthetic surgery in Tampa, vet the people first. The plastic surgeon’s red flags above are the floor, not the finish line. Some practitioners advertise board certified using cosmetic boards that require minimal training, so the specific board name matters more than the phrase itself.
For minimally invasive treatments performed by qualified nurse practitioners or physician assistants, yes. For actual surgical procedures, no. Surgical work requires a board-certified plastic surgeon operating in an accredited facility with board-certified anesthesia, not a retail med spa setting. Choosing the wrong setting is one of the most common red flags plastic surgeon shoppers regret missing.
Ask three. What's your revision rate for this specific procedure, who provides anesthesia and where, and can I see same-angle unfiltered photos of patients with anatomy similar to mine. Vague answers to any of those are themselves a warning sign. ASPS recommends patients also ask about medical history review and complication protocols.
Yes, even when surgery is performed in an office or surgical center. Hospital privileges mean a separate institution has vetted the surgeon's training and outcomes. Several recent cosmetic surgery mortalities documented by ASPS happened in non-accredited office settings without hospital backup. Privileges plus AAAHC facility accreditation is the safety floor for outpatient procedures.
It's a required medication review. Most surgeons now ask patients to pause GLP-1 weight loss drugs two to three weeks before surgery to reduce anesthesia risk. Post-weight-loss body contouring procedures rose noticeably in ASPS 2024 tracking, so consultations now spend more time on skin laxity, timing, and whether the patient's weight has stabilized.
The most common outcomes are scarring issues, asymmetry, and the need for revision surgery. Revision work tends to be harder than the original procedure because scar tissue and prior anatomy changes limit options. Surgeon forums consistently flag that patients who skipped credential verification end up paying for a second surgery and longer recovery, which is the exact thing they were trying to avoid the first time.
