PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for hair loss is a non-surgical, regenerative treatment that uses concentrated growth factors from your own blood to stimulate thicker, healthier hair growth in thinning areas of the scalp. During the procedure, a small blood sample is drawn, processed in a centrifuge to isolate a platelet-dense layer packed with growth factors, and then injected directly into the scalp where hair is thinning. Because the plasma comes from your own body, the risk of allergic reaction or infection is extremely low, making it one of the safest in-office hair restoration options available.
PRP is best suited for patients with early-stage or diffuse thinning not complete baldness and typically requires an initial series of monthly sessions followed by maintenance treatments every six months to sustain results. While PRP preparation systems are FDA-cleared for orthopedic use, their application in hair restoration is considered off-label, which is a legal and widely accepted practice in medicine. Results vary from patient to patient due to differences in natural platelet counts and treatment protocols, but many patients report noticeable improvements in hair density and thickness within a few months of starting treatment.
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a regenerative treatment designed to address hair loss by harnessing the power of growth factors found naturally in your own blood. It sits within the broader field of regenerative medicine, which also encompasses therapies like stem cell treatments. Growth factors used in hair restoration can come from three primary sources:
Platelets are small cell fragments circulating in your blood that play a vital role in clotting. Beyond that function, they also carry multiple types of growth factors, specialized proteins that instruct the body to repair and regenerate tissues like blood vessels and skin following injury. During a PRP procedure, a sample of the patient’s blood is placed in a centrifuge and separated into distinct layers: red blood cells, plasma, and a concentrated buffy coat layer rich in platelets. This platelet-dense layer is extracted along with a small volume of plasma, creating what we call platelet-rich plasma, the substance packed with regenerative growth factors.
Because normal platelet counts vary significantly from person to person (ranging from 150 to 450 per mcl), the concentration of growth factors in each PRP sample differs as well. This natural variation is one reason why outcomes can be inconsistent across patients.
Once prepared, PRP is injected just beneath the surface of the scalp in thinning areas. The goal is to deliver those concentrated growth factors directly to the follicles, encouraging thicker, darker, and healthier hair growth over time.
It is important to understand that while multiple PRP preparation systems have received FDA clearance for orthopedic uses, their application in hair restoration is considered “off-label.” This means that no manufacturer has submitted sufficient clinical data to the FDA to secure formal clearance specifically for treating hair loss. That said, off-label use is a legal and widely accepted practice in medicine, provided that the treating physician thoroughly educates the patient about the nature of the treatment, including its advantages, drawbacks, and limitations.
One ongoing challenge within the field is the absence of a universally accepted standard for how blood is collected, processed, and administered during PRP treatments. Dozens of different protocols and combinations exist, and no single standardized approach has gained widespread adoption among practitioners.
The precise biological mechanism through which PRP stimulates hair regrowth remains unclear. PRP contains a minimum of six distinct growth factors, and understanding the individual or combined effects of each on hair follicles is extremely complex. On top of that, PRP also carries more than 30 additional bioactive substances, including chemokines, clotting factors, and immune system mediators, any or all of which could play a role in influencing hair growth.
Among the growth factors most closely associated with hair restoration are Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), and Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF). These proteins are believed to extend the anagen phase, the active growth stage of the hair cycle and may also contribute to increased hair shaft thickness.
Like most non-surgical aesthetic treatments, PRP tends to deliver the best results for individuals experiencing thinning hair rather than those with areas of complete baldness. Patients who have noticed hair loss relatively recently are also generally better candidates. While thinning hair is more frequently seen in younger patients, anyone dealing with diffuse thinning may see improvement from PRP therapy. Additionally, patients who naturally have higher platelet counts may experience better outcomes, simply because their PRP will contain a greater volume of growth factors.

The blood is then processed using a centrifuge according to the clinic’s specific protocol, which may involve either a single or double spin cycle. The result is three distinct products: packed red blood cells, platelet-poor plasma (PPP), and the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) itself.
In some cases, a small sample may be tested to verify the exact platelet concentration. The target is to achieve a concentration that is two to six times higher than the baseline level in the original blood draw. There is currently no universally agreed-upon ideal concentration.
Depending on the practitioner’s protocol, the PRP may be injected on its own or combined with a porcine-based extracellular matrix, which acts as a stabilizer to help preserve the proteins and potentially enhance results. Typically, at least 6 ml of PRP is available for injection.

While there is no universally standardized treatment schedule, a common approach involves one session per month for three consecutive months, followed by maintenance booster sessions every six months. PRP therapy, along with other non-surgical hair loss treatments, has the potential to reduce shedding and produce visibly thicker hair. This improvement can result from an increase in the total number of hairs, greater hair shaft diameter, or a combination of both effects. However, not every patient responds to growth factor treatments; some may see little to no change. It is also crucial to understand that any positive results will only be sustained through ongoing maintenance treatments.
Numerous clinical studies have explored the effectiveness of PRP for hair loss. While some have shown promising results, others have been less conclusive. This inconsistency is largely attributed to the wide variety of treatment protocols and the differences in patient characteristics from one study to the next. PRP injections are widely regarded as a very safe procedure. Because the substance being injected is autologous, meaning it comes from your own body the risk of blood-borne or tissue-borne infections is essentially eliminated. When performed under proper aseptic conditions, the risk of infection from the injections is minimal, though it is worth noting that the scalp surface cannot be fully sterilized. The most common side effect is mild, temporary discomfort at the injection sites.
