A PDO thread lift raises sagging tissue along the lower face, jawline and neck. It uses fine dissolving threads placed under the skin through small entry points. There’s no surgery, and the lift shows the day the threads go in. It’s an in-office visit under local anesthetic, so you can come down from Old Seminole Heights to Formation on South Howard Avenue and be home the same day. This page covers what holds that lift at each stage, who threads suit, and when another tool does the job better.
Your in-office consultation with Dr. Grandhige is a full surgical assessment, and its fee can be applied toward any procedure or product at Formation. To start from home, book a complimentary virtual evaluation with patient coordinator Hanna. She’ll assess your goals and outline a plan before you decide to come in.
A PDO thread lift is a suspension treatment. It repositions tissue rather than adding volume or heating the skin. Each thread is made of polydioxanone (PDO), the same dissolving material used in surgical sutures. Threads used for lifting carry tiny barbs, often called cogs, that grip tissue so it can be moved upward.
At Formation, sessions typically take under an hour, with local anesthetic in the treatment areas. Mild swelling and bruising are common for the first few days. Most patients are back to normal activities within two to three days. PDO threads are sold in the U.S. under FDA 510(k) clearance, which is a clearance, not an FDA approval.
Most thread-lift pages stop there. The more useful question is what happens after week one. The lift starts out mechanical, turns biological, and the thread itself doesn’t stay. Formation lays that sequence out as a timeline.
Formation specializes in male cosmetic surgery, and male faces call for a different eye. The goal along a man’s jaw is a sharper angle without a tight, over-pulled look. Dr. Grandhige’s standard is to do only what’s necessary, and the best result is one people can’t quite pin down. Formation’s PDO thread lift for men page covers male-specific planning in more detail.
The Formation Thread Timeline splits a thread lift into three phases: Hold, Build and Absorb. What’s holding your lift changes as the months go by. The phases overlap, but the order doesn’t change.
From the first day, the barbs do the lifting. It’s a mechanical result, and you see it right away. PDO starts out strong, but suture labeling shows it gives up much of its tensile strength over roughly the first six weeks. That means the barbs’ grip is at its firmest early. Swelling and bruising belong to this phase too, so your first look in the mirror isn’t the final read.
As your body responds to the thread, it lays down new collagen along the thread track. Formation’s guidance is that results keep developing over one to three months as that collagen forms. This is the phase your own biology runs, which is why the preparation work described below happens when it does.
PDO breaks down by hydrolysis, a slow reaction with the water in your tissue. Labeling for PDO sutures puts mass loss at a minimum until about day 90, with absorption virtually complete within six months. After that, no thread is holding anything. What remains is the tissue your body built around it.
This is where the published evidence thins out. A 2018 systematic review in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that every included study but two showed, at best, very limited durability of the lift. Those two were sponsored by thread manufacturers. The review covered barbed thread lifts broadly rather than PDO alone, and a separate 2021 review reached the same conclusion. So this page won’t give you a guaranteed number of months.
If your goal is skin tightening that doesn’t depend on a thread staying in place, Dr. Grandhige may bring up FaceTite, a radiofrequency-assisted treatment placed beneath the skin.
Threads suit mild to moderate sagging along the jawline, lower face or neck. They fit someone who wants a visible lift without surgery and accepts that the lift is temporary. Threads reposition tissue. They don’t remove fat, tighten loose skin from beneath or treat neck muscle bands.
Age and thread count change the odds. A 2026 multicenter study of 2,000 PDO thread lifts found an overall complication rate of 12.4%, led by skin retraction, asymmetry and pain.
In practice, more threads isn’t automatically a better lift, and your age belongs in the planning conversation.
When the problem is something other than sagging, Formation tells you. When fullness under the chin is fat, a thread won’t remove it. One Formation patient, a professional in his 40s, had a neck and jawline that never responded to weight loss, and he hated how he looked in photos. His answer was neck liposuction with jawline contouring, not threads. Afterward, he said his face finally matched the rest of his body, and he started getting into pictures again. Neck liposuction works best with reasonable skin elasticity, roughly skin ages 25 to 55, and patients return to work at about one week.
If your neck shows platysmal bands, the problem sits in the platysma muscle. That’s where MyEllevate, a permanent suspension suture, paired with platysmaplasty comes in. For sagging beyond what tightening or contouring can reach, Formation stays in contact with surgeons who do that work well and points you to the right one.
Thread lifting is generally safe, but side effects are common enough to plan around. A 2026 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Surgery pooled 26 studies covering 2,827 patients. It reported swelling in 34% of cases, bruising in 26%, visible or palpable threads in 10% and skin dimpling in 7%.
Read those figures with two caveats. The pooled studies varied widely, and the analysis didn’t separate PDO from other thread materials or techniques. They describe thread lifts in general, not a forecast for your face.
The authors also point to rarer events described in individual case reports, including injury to branches of the facial nerve or to the parotid duct. That’s a reason to have threads placed by someone with surgical training in facial anatomy. If you can see or feel a thread after treatment, call the office rather than waiting for it to settle.
Formation treats the weeks around a thread lift as part of the treatment. Your health and diet are assessed beforehand. Nutrition, supplements and peptides are then adjusted in the window right before and after, so your body builds the most structure it can while the Build phase is underway.
For threads, that window lines up with the phase your biology controls. The thread is identical at every practice that buys it. The thinking around it differs, and that’s the center of Formation’s philosophy.
Recovery itself is short. Mild swelling and bruising are common for the first few days, and most patients return to normal activities within two to three days. The lift keeps developing over one to three months. If photos or a wedding are coming up, raise it at your consultation so the treatment lands on the right side of the date.
From Old Seminole Heights, Formation is a straight run south on I-275.
A thread lift is an in-office visit that typically runs under an hour, so there’s no hotel stay or overnight plan to arrange. You come down, have the treatment and head home the same day.
Old Seminole Heights runs from the Hillsborough River south to Hillsborough Avenue, with I-275 cutting through it. It contains the Seminole Heights Residential District, the first of its two nationally recognized historic districts. It’s a porch-and-sidewalk neighborhood of bungalows. If you’d rather not explain a few days of swelling to neighbors, plan two or three quiet days after treatment.
Consultations at Formation are with Dr. Gopal Grandhige, a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in aesthetic surgery.
His view of the job is plain: guide you to the right decision, even when that means waiting or choosing something else. Dr. Ahmad Saad, Formation’s board-certified plastic surgeon, rounds out the surgical team.
The threads dissolve within about six months. Whatever holds after that is the collagen your body built around them, and that varies by person. Published evidence on lasting lift is limited, so no one can honestly guarantee a number of months.
Local anesthetic numbs the treatment areas first. Mild swelling and bruising are common for a few days. In the 2026 study of 2,000 PDO cases, pain was recorded as an adverse event in 1.75% of cases.
Most patients return to normal activities within two to three days. If you’re on camera or in front of clients, leave a cushion before anything important, since swelling and bruising are the visible part.
Sometimes. The 2026 meta-analysis pooled visible or palpable threads at about 10% across thread types, and dimpling at about 7%. Call the office about anything you can see or feel rather than waiting it out.
No. Platysmal bands come from the platysma muscle, which a dissolving thread doesn’t treat. Where bands are present, Formation pairs MyEllevate with platysmaplasty. Unlike barbed PDO threads, the MyEllevate suture doesn’t dissolve and can be removed.
Yes, combining a thread lift with injectables is something to discuss at your consultation. Threads reposition tissue but don’t add projection. A weak chin or soft jaw angle may call for jawline fillers such as Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite, or Juvederm, a hyaluronic acid.
It can. In the 2026 multicenter study, complication odds rose in each age bracket past 40, and were about five times higher at 60 and older than in the youngest group. Age is part of the candidacy conversation, along with how many threads a plan calls for.

A PDO thread lift is a good first move for a jawline that’s just starting to soften, in skin that still springs back. It’s the wrong move for fat, muscle bands, a short chin or hanging skin. The research says to plan around a lift that fades within months while the collagen keeps working.
The fastest way to know where you stand is the Fit Check, done in person by the surgeon who would place your threads. Six hours. Hundreds of decisions.
High-definition liposuction is as much about precision as it is about technique.
Dr. Gopal can spend 6–7 hours on a single HD liposuction procedure, carefully evaluating the body’s anatomy, refining muscle definition, and making sure each contour transitions naturally into the next.
And that level of attention doesn’t change as the hours go by.
Because the final result is shaped by hundreds of small decisions made throughout the procedure.

Which one surprised you the most? 👀
Liposuction is one of those procedures people have heard a lot about, but not everything they’ve heard is accurate.
From what liposuction can actually achieve to how long results take to develop, there are plenty of misconceptions that can lead to unrealistic expectations.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige, board-certified plastic surgeon at Formation in Tampa, breaks down some of the most common beliefs about liposuction and explains what’s fact and what’s fiction.

This is not your typical liposuction. 👀
Most people think liposuction is simply about removing unwanted fat. But high-definition liposuction takes a different approach.
Before surgery, Dr. Gopal carefully maps out the patient’s natural anatomy, marking the chest, abdomen, and waist to guide where fat will be removed and where it should be preserved.
Why does that matter?
Because removing fat evenly isn’t necessarily going to create definition. HD liposuction uses strategic fat removal to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more sculpted, athletic appearance.
And those lines? They’re part of the planning that makes this level of precision possible.
The photos show an actual patient immediately after surgery. Swelling is still present, and the final results will develop as healing progresses.

Does fat move after lipo?
It’s a common concern, especially when someone notices weight gain in an area that wasn’t treated.
Here’s what actually happens.
The fat cells removed during liposuction are gone permanently. But if someone gains weight afterward, the remaining fat cells can still grow, including in areas that weren’t treated.
The fat didn’t move. The body gained weight.
That’s why Dr. Gopal emphasizes being at a weight patients can realistically maintain before surgery. Not the lowest weight they can reach, but one they can sustain long after recovery.

Want a more sculpted body?
High-definition liposuction takes body contouring a step further. Instead of simply removing excess fat, it focuses on sculpting around the body’s natural muscle structure to create more visible definition and a more athletic contour.
Dr. Gopal Grandhige specializes in HD liposuction, customizing each procedure based on the patient’s anatomy, body shape, and desired level of definition.
Because the goal isn’t to give everyone the same body. It’s to create a result that works with their natural anatomy.

Don’t plan lipo 2 months before vacation.
If the goal is to enjoy a more sculpted, defined body next summer, the planning needs to start months before that.
Fall is one of our busiest seasons at Formation, and there’s a reason for it. Many patients are already thinking about how they want to look and feel next summer.
But getting there takes time.
At Formation, Dr. Gopal requires at least four weeks of preparation before surgery. That time is spent preparing patients physically and mentally for the procedure and recovery.
After surgery, swelling needs to go down, the skin needs to contract, and the tissues need time to settle into their new contour.
It can take 6–9 months for results to look and feel natural.
That’s why Dr. Gopal recommends planning liposuction 6–12 months ahead, especially when there’s a specific season or vacation in mind.
If next summer is the goal, now is the time to start the conversation.

How defined would you go?
Not everyone wants the same look from HD liposuction. Some prefer a smooth, subtle contour, while others want their abs to stand out.
Here’s how the three levels of definition differ:
01. Low definition: A leaner, natural-looking abdomen with subtle definition and light contouring around the underlying muscles.
02. Medium definition: More visible separation between the abdominal muscles, with added definition through the abs and obliques without a sharply etched six-pack.
03. High definition: More pronounced sculpting around the abs and obliques to highlight the underlying muscle structure and create a more chiseled, athletic look.
Dr. Gopal tailors his HD liposuction technique to the level of definition you’re looking for, while considering what’s achievable for your body.
Which would you choose: 1, 2 or 3? Tell us in the comments!

This isn’t traditional lipo. It’s HD lipo.
For this patient, getting smaller isn’t the goal.
He already works out. He already has the muscle. Dr. Gopal’s job is to use HD liposuction to bring out more of that existing definition and shape the areas around it so the body looks more athletic and defined.
That’s why the markings matter. Before surgery even begins, Dr. Gopal is mapping out how the abs, chest, arms and surrounding areas should work together in the final result.

This is the part of the job that never gets old.
There’s something special about knowing how different a patient’s life might feel on the other side.
Not just because their body may look different, but because of everything that can come with it.
Feeling more comfortable in their own skin.
Saying yes to plans without thinking twice.
Looking forward to summer instead of dreading it.
Plastic surgery can change a body. But sometimes, what matters most is how differently someone gets to experience their life afterward.
And that’s a pretty incredible part of what we get to do at Formation Tampa.

Three small incisions instead of one long one.
For some patients with diastasis recti, repairing the separated abdominal muscles doesn’t necessarily require a traditional tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck makes sense when there’s loose skin that needs to be removed at the same time. But some patients are lean, don’t have much loose skin, and still have that persistent pooch from muscle separation.
For the right patient, Dr. Gopal can repair the diastasis using a minimally invasive robotic approach through three small incisions, about 8 mm each, hidden along the bikini line.
The key is choosing the right procedure for the right anatomy. If there’s significant loose skin or excess fat, repairing the muscles alone may actually make that looseness more noticeable.
That’s why the consultation matters. It’s not just about seeing a belly pooch. It’s about understanding what’s causing it and what actually needs to be addressed.
